Colby Covington, Kamaru Usman

Kamaru Usman has responded to Colby Covington’s accusations of cheating and foul play in their 2019 title fight.

There was one thing missing from the aftermath of UFC 245: Colby Covington. Known for being one of the more verbose members on the UFC roster, the usually outspoken Covington went dark after losing to Usman in the main event. But before he did, he made sure to give referee Marc Goddard a piece of his mind immediately after the fight.

“Normally people do their fucking in the bedroom, not the octagon @marcgoddard_uk! I go in there to kill or be killed. You robbed me of that. You robbed the people of a fair fight. You should be ashamed of yourself. Fake nut shot. Fake eye poke. Fake stoppage. Fake ref. #ufc245,” Covington tweeted.

Since Covington re-emerged in 2020 and resumed doing media, he has reiterated his accusations against Usman at every turn. As the above tweet briefly addresses, Covington argues that the Nigerian American cheated during the fight by feigning reactions to fake fouls: a kick to the groin in the second round and an eye poke in the third.

He also held Goddard equally responsible for allowing Usman to shift the momentum with his alleged acting. Covington concluded by saying the fight ended with an early stoppage even though he was intelligently defending himself.

Kamaru Usman Provides In-Depth Retort To Covington’s Claims

Many people believe video evidence supports Covington’s complaints, and others find it to be inconclusive and/or inconsequential to the final outcome of the fight. During a UFC 268 media scrum, Usman was asked about Covington’s claims, and the champion did not seem to be bothered.

“It’s simple. It wasn’t a decision. I finished you,” Usman said of Covington. “I actually like the fact that he stuck with the excuses and he kept making the excuses because again, it made you guys all want to see that again, right? And so, yeah, he did a wonderful job there.”

At this point, Usman took the time to address each of Covington’s claims one by one.

“He’s saying, ‘Oh, it’s a fake eye poke. The masses watched you finger my eye.

He’s saying it wasn’t a nut shot and I got five minutes. It grazed my cup. That’s true. And of course, as a man, you know when your cup gets grazed, you anticipate what’s coming after that pain. And I was anticipating the pain. And after about 30 seconds—you guys can go back and watch the video—literally about 30 seconds, I’m like, ‘Yeah, that pain’s not coming. Let’s scrap. Let’s go. And we continued on.”

Usman would then turn the tables on Covington, pointing to a moment in the fight where he alleges it was Covington who was the one doing the acting

“And you saw the shot where I broke his jaw clean off, clean shot. He was holding his eye,” Usman said. “Did you guys see that? He was complaining to the ref that it was an eye poke. And even the commentators, DC was like, ‘That was a straight right hand right on the button.’ And he said it was his eye. So who’s actually claiming fouls here?”

“I Think I Broke My Jaw”

In a separate interview, Usman stayed on the offensive after countering Covington’s cheating accusations. He would then respond to Covington’s claim that his jaw was actually not broken, even though Covington could be heard telling his corner that he thought it was.

As recently as last month, Covington said that the “broken jaw story” was a fabrication that began circulating due to a bad Photoshop. Usman brought with him a theory for why Covington told his coaches between rounds that his jaw was broken.

“And then of course, he said that, ‘Oh, my jaw wasn’t broken. Then, you go to your corner and you told your corner, ‘Hey, my jaw’s broken’ because you wanted your coaches to potentially save you and stop the fight for you. And they didn’t so you had to continue fighting. And then, you got put on your ass twice and finished.”

Usman would conclude his retort by addressing Covington’s claim of an early stoppage as well as the criticisms he later made about his old gym, American Top Team.

“Then, you said, ‘No, the referee’s the one that helped you. That’s why.’ The referee didn’t put you on your ass twice. I did that,” Usman said. “And he knows exactly why. Then, after the fight, he goes to, ‘Oh, no, it was my team. It was the training environment that I was at. That’s why I lost.’

“Come on, man. As a man, you’ve seen other former champions that can’t accept a loss. You have to be able to accept that loss because that helps your growth. So if he can’t accept it, it might be a short night for him this Saturday.”

Hopefully, there will be no explanations or video analysis needed when this highly anticipated rematch goes down this Saturday at UFC 268. In the meantime, if you want to conduct your own investigation of the classic between Usman and Covington, which won MMA News’ 2019 Fight of the Year, you can do so below, courtesy of the UFC’s YouTube channel.

Chandler: I Will Be Holding UFC Gold By The Middle Of Next Year

Justin Gaethje, Michael Chandler

UFC lightweight contender Michael Chandler is hoping to secure a second 155-pound title shot with a victory over former interim champion Justin Gaethje at UFC 268.

Chandler had his first crack at reserving his place on the lightweight throne in just his second Octagon outing. Having signed with the UFC in 2020, “Iron” made his promotional debut in January this year against the always-resilient and entertaining Dan Hooker. Announcing his arrival in about as emphatic fashion as he could have, the former three-time Bellator Lightweight Champion finished “The Hangman” inside three minutes of the opening round.

With the division’s belt relinquished by the great Khabib Nurmagomedov, and top contender Dustin Poirier deciding to pursue a money trilogy fight with former two-division champ Conor McGregor, Chandler found himself opposite Charles Oliveira in UFC 262’s vacant championship clash. Despite a dominant opening round, the 35-year-old watched the gold slip away from his grasp when “Do Bronx” mounted an incredible second-round comeback.

Saturday, Chandler will return to the cage in the hope of rebounding back into contention immediately. In his way will be striking brute Gaethje, who hasn’t fought since his own title loss at UFC 254 last October. Ahead of the fight, Chandler described “The Highlight” as the “scariest” and “craziest” opponent he’s ever been matched up with.

Michael Chandler believes his Madison Square Garden contest with Gaethje will serve as a true title eliminator. Speaking during an interview with ESPN MMA’s Brett Okamoto, “Iron” hinted that he’s been told an impressive performance on November 6 will land him a second shot at UFC gold.

“If I win this fight, I think I’m right there back in title contention. Justin Gaethje is the number one contender, he calls himself, he’s said he’s already been told he gets a title shot with this win, you know, I may have heard that as well.”

If the winner of Chandler vs. Gaethje does secure another championship opportunity, they’ll be facing the winner of the UFC 269 main event between champion Oliveira and challenger Dustin Poirier. Despite falling to the Brazilian in May this year, Chandler believes his first-round performance against “Do Bronx” is grounds for a 2022 rematch.

“Either way, we’ll see what happens and how the fight on December 11 [Oliveira vs. Poirier] materializes. I think if Oliveira does find a way to beat Poirier, which, I do have Poirier winning that fight, but if Oliveira does win, he hadn’t lost a round since 2017 until Michael Chandler showed up and 10-8’ed him in the first round.

“So, I think there’s grounds for there to be a rematch between me and Charles Oliveira for the title,” added Chandler. “Conor’s gonna be coming back, he’s gonna be doing Conor things and he’s probably gonna want the Poirier fight… we’ll see what happens if Poirier’s holding the title. Who knows, it’s always an interesting landscape. All I know is, I plan to be holding UFC gold by the middle of next year. That’s the plan. That’s the goal. It starts on November 6 and knocking out Justin Gaethje.”

Do you think a victory for Michael Chandler at UFC 268 would earn him a second crack at lightweight gold?

Justin Gaethje Expects Title Shot With Win Over Michael Chandler

Justin GaethjeUFC lightweight contender Justin Gaethje expects a title shot for his next fight if he beats Michael Chandler at UFC 268, and won’t be happy if he gets passed up by the UFC brass. Justin Gaethje

UFC lightweight contender Justin Gaethje expects a title shot for his next fight if he beats Michael Chandler at UFC 268, and won’t be happy if he gets passed up by the UFC brass.

Gaethje is coming off a title loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov last year at UFC 254, as he fell by second-round submission. He had some early success on the feet but eventually struggled to find answers to Nurmagomedov’s superior ground game.

Gaethje will make his return to the octagon this weekend at UFC 268 against Chandler, another former title challenger who lost to Charles Oliveira for the vacant belt at UFC 262. The fight will be the appetizer for viewers just before the Zhang Weili/Rose Namajunas and Kamaru Usman/Colby Covington title rematches.

Justin Gaethje is laser-focused at another shot at UFC gold

Gaethje wants a title shot next, and if he doesn’t, he’s planning to go off on the UFC and Dana White.

“If I don’t get the shot, we riot,” Gaethje said during his UFC 268 pre-fight presser. “We go to war. I have to be biased when it comes to this. I’m not going to be around here for much longer, so if I were to get snubbed again then, yeah, I’d have to do something about it. Whether that’s causing a ruckus.”

“I have to let my manager do his job,” Gaethje continued. “I got the best manager in the game. We all know what’s supposed to happen if I get this win on Saturday night, so hopefully you all riot with me.”

Before losing to Nurmagomedov, Gaethje earned the interim title by beating Tony Ferguson at UFC 249. He also earned knockout wins over Donald Cerrone, Edson Barboza, and James Vick.

When the Oliveira vs. Chandler fight was set for the vacant title, many felt that Gaethje was robbed of another title opportunity. But with a win this weekend, he could earn another shot at the belt that he’s chased after since signing with the promotion.

Does Justin Gaethje deserve a title shot with a win over Michael Chandler at UFC 268?

Vicente Luque

UFC welterweight contender Vicente Luque will weigh in and serve as the backup to Kamaru Usman vs. Colby Covington 2 at UFC 268.

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto was the first to report the news, per Luque’s manager Ali Abdelaziz. Luque will weigh in at a championship weight of 170 pounds just in case either Usman or Covington fail to make the walk on Saturday night.

Luque, in many eyes, is the No. 1 contender who will face the winner of Usman vs. Covington next. He’s been on a tear as of late, with four straight wins over the likes of former champion Tyron Woodley, and most recently a first-round submission against Michael Chiesa at UFC 265.

Vicente Luque could get the next title shot against either Kamaru Usman or Colby Covington

Luque has looked like a force of nature at welterweight since losing to Stephen Thompson at UFC 244. Since losing in The Ultimate Fighter: Season 21 Finale against Michael Graves, he’s only lost to Thompson and Leon Edwards in his professional career.

Luque’s gesture of offering to be the backup for Usman/Covington could also complicate things in the title picture. Edwards is slated to face Jorge Masvidal at UFC 269 next month, and could potentially get the next title shot with his long winning streak. But, Luque also has a good case to get the next title shot with his recent successes.

Luque and Usman are also former training partners during their time at Blackzilians during the gym’s rise in south Florida. Luque called for a fight with Usman following his latest win over Chiesa.

UFC 268 is expected to be one of the most exciting cards of the year, with two title fights and plenty of talent on the undercard. In the event that something happens with the main event, Luque is ready to step in and keep the welterweight fight intact.

Should Vicente Luque get the next UFC welterweight title shot?

Zhang Weili No Longer Feels Friendly Towards “Fake” Rose Namajunas

Zhang Weili, Rose Namajunas

Former UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion Zhang Weili has slammed “fake” Rose Namajunas for her pre-UFC 261 comments, claiming she doesn’t feel “friendly” towards her rival anymore.

Before entering the Octagon with Namajunas in April, Zhang hadn’t tasted defeat since her professional mixed martial arts debut in 2013. After 21 consecutive victories, “Magnum” found herself at the top of the UFC’s 115-pound mountain and with a successful defense under her belt.

After dethroning Jéssica Andrade in front of her home crowd in Shenzhen, China, Zhang retained her belt in a five-round Fight of the Year war against former champ Joanna J?drzejczyk. After a memorable first defense, Zhang hoped to emerge victorious again in front of the first UFC crowd in over a year. But inside the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, the 32-year-old was knocked out by Namajunas.

Now over six months later, Zhang has her chance for redemption. In the UFC 268 co-main event, she’ll enter the cage with Namajunas for the second time. This time, she has no intention of exchanging pleasantries with the champion.

Zhang Believes Namajunas Crossed The Line

A sizable chunk of the narrative heading into their UFC 261 clash was Rose Namajunas’ comments about Zhang Weili’s home country. Ahead of the fight, “Magnum” suggested she was keen on developing a friendship with the then-challenger after they threw hands (via the South China Morning Post). Any chance of that happening appeared to be dampened after Namajunas compared her fight with Zhang to a fight against communism, using the term “better dead than red.”

Having previously responded by describing her opponent’s comments as “a joke,” Zhang has once again condemned Namajunas. According to the #1-ranked strawweight, the champ made those remarks in order to stir up hatred towards “Magnum” from the fans. With that in mind, Zhang has no plans on a friendly embrace with her rival this weekend.

“I was bothered by what she had said,” Zhang told Yahoo! Sports. “The political comments Rose made got the audience not to support me. It was beyond [fair play]. It crossed a line. I don’t feel as friendly toward Rose as a fellow mixed martial artist as I did before. I have a lot more training and I have had a lot more focus on myself.”

Discussing the differences between her feuds with J?drzejczyk and Namajunas, Zhang suggested the Polish star was the opposite of “Thug Rose,” who she described as “fake.” Nevertheless, Zhang believes her disdain towards her upcoming opponent will only provide her more motivation heading into UFC 268.

“Joanna is very direct and blunt, but Rose is more fake and not very direct,” Zhang said. “Joanna is direct as could be, and I knew what I was dealing with. But Rose had a different way and it crossed a line. But it’s got me motivated.”

With Namajunas’ victory at UFC 261, she became the first woman in UFC history to regain a belt after previously losing it. Looking to follow in the champ’s footsteps, Zhang is confident she’ll have the gold wrapped around her waist again come November 6.

“It will show the spirit I have to overcome problems and find a way to be successful,” she said. “I am confident I will do it. Rose lost the belt and then regained it, and I feel I can do that, too.”

Who do you think will have their hand raised at UFC 268, Zhang Weili or Rose Namajunas?

Frankie Edgar

Former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar doesn’t envision retiring anytime soon, and believes even when he does hang up his gloves, he’ll remain involved in MMA.

Edgar is one of the sport’s all-time greats. After an unbeaten six-fight start to his career, “The Answer” was signed by the UFC in 2007. Eight fights later, Edgar was 7-1 on MMA’s biggest stage and had defeated BJ Penn to become the 155-pound champ.

In the years that followed, the New Jersey native made the move down to featherweight, defeated the likes of current lightweight king Charles Oliveira, Urijah Faber, Chad Mendes, Jeremy Stephens, and Yair Rodriguez. Having failed to capture the 145-pound gold in three attempts, Edgar went down another weight class to bantamweight.

In his 135-pound debut, Edgar defeated perennial contender Pedro Munhoz, who boasts a victory over former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt. After jumping straight into the division’s top 10, the veteran was matched up with top-ranked star Cory Sandhagen. He was knocked out by “The Sandman” in brutal fashion by a first-round flying knee.

Now eight months later, the 40-year-old will be looking to return to the win column with an impressive performance against the durable Marlon “Chito” Vera. The pair will collide on a stacked UFC 268 main card inside Madison Square Garden this Saturday.

Edgar Doesn’t See A Career Away From MMA

Given the frightening end to his most recent Octagon outing, as well as his age, many have wondered whether the 40-year-old will consider retiring from active competition sooner rather than later. During a recent appearance on the Real Quick with Mike Swick podcast, Edgar suggested he has more than a few trips to the cage left in him.

“I don’t know what 40’s supposed to feel like, but I feel good. I still get after it in the gym. My workload’s pretty much the same… I’ll never put an end date on anything, man. I don’t know if I’ll ever even retire… officially at least. I’m just going out there and having fun. I still enjoy doing what I do. If my body allows it, I’ll do this for a long time, man.”

Discussing what his future will look like when he does choose to end his active career, Edgar suggested he’s put too much into MMA to leave it behind for a new venture. Whether through coaching or management, “The Answer” knows he’ll be staying involved in the sport.

“I’m gonna stay involved in this game in some way, shape, or form. Whether I open up my own gym, whether I help manage guys, you know, maybe help Ali [Abdelaziz] in that department as well. But you know, I feel like I’ve put so much into it that I can’t walk away from this sport. It’s still my passion. Already I feel like I help the younger guys on my team so, I feel like I have a good niche with that and I feel like I could be useful for some guys that are trying to further their careers.”

Do you think Frankie Edgar will have his hand raised at UFC 268 this weekend?
