Gunnar Nelson Claims Jorge Masvidal Declined To Fight Him

Gunnar Nelson is now fighting Alex Oliveira at UFC 231 instead of Jorge Masvidal.

Gunnar Nelson claims in a recent interview that he was finding it hard to get an opponent for his next fight. One of those contenders that he was down to fight was Jorge Masvidal. However, he was one of the fighters that turned down the opportunity to take the fight.

Nelson is scheduled to face Alex Oliveira at UFC 231. This event pay-per-view is set to take place on Saturday, December 8, 2018, at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Gunnar Nelson Making Claims

The longtime UFC star opened up on the situation in a recent interview. This is where he claimed that he was looking for a ranked opponent. However, Masvidal wasn’t interested in making the fight happen.

“They said Masvidal first,” Nelson said on the latest episode of Eurobash. “They did throw a few names out there. But I didn’t see a lot, but obviously I just wanted to get a ranked opponent if possible. Masvidal said ‘no’, I think he’s going down to lightweight or something.”

Now, with his next fight lined up, he’s just happy to have an opponent in place no matter who he’s fighting.

“[Masvidal] said ‘no’ anyway, we did expect that, but I was very happy that I got Alex Oliveira. Because I think he’s ranked one above me and he’s a great fighter. I was expecting that it might be someone that’s unranked. I would have taken it to be honest because at this stage I just want to get in there. It didn’t really matter who it was for me. I just told my team, ‘Tell me who I’m fighting and I’ll be ready’.”

Nelson has not been seen in the Octagon since he suffered a first-round knockout loss to Santiago Ponzinibbio in the main event of the UFC Fight Night 113 event in Scotland last July.

Changing Times

At the end of the day, he understands the reasons for the fight not happening. However, that hasn’t stopped his belief in how fighters approach competing inside of the Octagon these days.

“It’s definitely changed,” said Nelson (H/T to MMAfighting). “People are choosing and picking a lot more than they were. There are a lot more people thinking about what they are gaining from it. How much of a risk it is compared to those gains. I understand that. It’s probably a lot of the management that take care of that stuff. It is what it is. I’ll stick to my ways.”

UFC 232 poster has been released by the Las Vegas-based promotion and it’s a cool one to end the year off right. For years now, posters have been something that fight fans look forward to seeing. The reason for that is due to it being the first promotional material sent out by the promotion.

Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson for the vacant UFC light heavyweight title is expected to serve as the main event of this show.

Meanwhile, in the co-headliner, it’s a clash of champions as Cris Cyborg will defend her UFC women’s featherweight title. She’ll take on UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes in a fight that is widely regarded as a super fight. Also, a fight that many believe will be the toughest challenge that Cyborg has faced in her pro-MMA career.

Corey Anderson vs. Ilir Latifi, Michael Chiesa vs. Carlos Condit, and Megan Anderson vs. Cat Zingano are expected to complete the five bout main card.

‘DC’ Will Only Return To 205 For One Fight

There’s only one fight that will motivate Daniel Cormier to drop back down to 205 pounds.

The post ‘DC’ Will Only Return To 205 For One Fight appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

There’s only a single fight that can lure Daniel Cormier back to 205 pounds.

Former champion Jon Jones’ issues outside the Octagon have put the UFC’s light heavyweight division through the ringer for the past several years. The issues started back in 2015 when Jones was arrested for a hit-and-run incident that injured a pregnant woman. Jones was subsequently stripped of his then-held light heavyweight title.

At the time, “Bones” was preparing to defend the 205-pound strap against renowned knockout artist Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. Due to Jones’ stripping and indefinite suspension, Jones was removed from that contest. Instead, Cormier, the man Jones had previously defeated just four months prior, stepped in. Jones handed Cormier the first loss of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career at UFC 182 that January.

With Jones removed from his fight against Johnson, that left “DC” and “Rumble” to go one-on-one for the vacant strap. Cormier would win the title via third-round submission. After a successful title defense against Alexander Gustafsson, Cormier was set to make his next title defense against Jones. The bitter rivals were slated to headline UFC 200, one of the biggest cards in UFC history. Unfortunately, Jones tested positive for a banned substance from a pre-fight United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) test.

Jones was again removed from the fight, and Cormier faced Anderson Silva in a non-title fight, which he won via unanimous decision. Following another victory over Anthony Johnson, Cormier found himself signed for yet another fight against Jones, still itching to avenge the sole loss on his record.

Although Jones made it to fight night, controversy still plagued the event. Jones defeated Cormier via third-round head-kick knockout, seemingly ending the rivalry with “DC” and calling out Brock Lesnar for a superfight. However, just days later, it was revealed Jones had once again failed a USADA pre-fight drug test.

Jones’ Loss Was Cormier’s Gain

As a result, he was stripped of his title and the strap was returned to Cormier. “DC” made yet another successful title defense in the meantime against Volkan Oezdemir. He then jumped up to heavyweight and became the UFC’s second-ever “champ champ” by knocking out Stipe Miocic for the heavyweight throne. Now, Cormier finds himself ready to defend the heavyweight title against Derrick Lewis, while Jones gears up for his return from suspension.

In an interesting twist, Jones will actually be rematching Alexander Gustafsson, the man who has come closer than anybody to besting Jones inside the Octagon. When Jones and Gustafsson headline UFC 232 on December 29th in Las Vegas, the light heavyweight championship will be on the line. Upon the fight’s start, Cormier will be stripped of the 205-pound title.

Cormier is ready to retire from MMA competition soon, and after his fight with Lewis, he says he only has one left in him. That will likely be against Brock Lesnar. However, Cormier still wishes to avenge his loss to Jones if the opportunity ever arises. As he told “Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show” earlier today (Mon. October 29, 2018), the only fight that would motivate Cormier to drop back down to 205 pounds would be Jones.

Despite an impressive showing from rising contender Anthony Smith over the weekend in Moncton, it doesn’t look like Cormier has any aspirations of competing at light heavyweight against the rising stars of the division. Instead, he’s happy to retire a heavyweight, unless a grudge match with Jones is on the table.

The UFC is most certainly interested in making that fight. Will Cormier stick around for it?

The UFC’s big end-of-the-year pay-per-view just got a little bit bigger as Andrei Arlovski will take on Walt Harris in Las Vegas at UFC 232 in December.

Arlovski has been able to prolong his fighting career well past his physical prime. He was once ranked among the very best heavyweights in the world. As of late Arlovski has fallen on hard times. He has gone just 2-7 since 2016. Its fair to point out, however, “Pitbull” has been fighting the very best heavyweights in the world during that stretch.

Harris has struggled to find consistency since joining the UFC. At times, “The Big Ticket” looks like he could be a solid heavyweight challenger while losing easily in others. He has a 5-6 record in the UFC overall. Harris has managed to rack up more than a few highlight reel knockouts during that time.

Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson are expected to compete in the main event for the soon-to-be-vacated light heavyweight title. Women’s featherweight champ Cris Cyborg will battle women’s bantamweight champ Amanda Nunes in the co-main event.

Jon Jones Not Impressed With Anthony Smith’s “Ok” Performance At UFC Moncton

Jon Jones has reacted to the latest win by Anthony Smith, who is expected to be next in line for a title shot.

Jon Jones not impressed by the latest win that rising prospect Anthony Smith was able to secure in a fight against his toughest challenger to date.

As seen in the headliner of UFC Moncton (also known as UFC Fight Night 138) at Moncton Coliseum in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, Smith scored a big win. He beat former title contender Volkan Oezdemir by third round rear-naked choke. This fight aired as the main event on FOX Sports 1.

Heading into this fight, there were many fight fans believed that Smith would be the next in line for a title shot. Thus, when he picked up this victory, it’s almost a guarantee.

Smith is 7-2 under the UFC banner and holds wins over the likes of Mauricio Rua, Rashad Evans, and Hector Lombard. Before this fight, he beat former UFC light heavyweight champ Rua by KO in July in Hamburg, Germany.

The belief is that he’ll fight the winner of the vacant light heavyweight title bout between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson in the main event of UFC 232. The reason for the title being vacated is due to reigning champion Daniel Cormier being stripped due to his status as the heavyweight champion. He’s slated to fight Derrick Lewis with the heavyweight title on the line at the UFC 230 pay-per-view event. He is then expected to fight Brock Lesnar in January of next year.

Jon Jones Not Impressed With This Win

The former UFC light heavyweight champion reacted to his win by writing the following on his Twitter, “It was OK.”

The UFC 232 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.
