Khabib Nurmagomedov admits that Conor McGregor’s drawing power is something to behold. Nurmagomedov and McGregor have had a bitter rivalry that spilled over following the main event of UFC 229. Last month, Nurmagomedov successfully defended his UFC lightweight title against McGregor. After submitting the “Notorious” one, “The Eagle” went after Dillon Danis in the crowd. […]

Anderson Silva Says Conor McGregor Is ‘Afraid To Lose To Me’

“The Spider” believes Conor McGregor is afraid to lose to him.

The argument could be made that Conor McGregor was overlooking Khabib Nurmagomedov heading into their bout.

McGregor was submitted by “The Eagle” at UFC 229 last month in his highly-anticipated Octagon return. Prior to their fight, however, McGregor was already speculating about who his next opponent could be. The Irishman threw out a potential fight against Anderson Silva as something that seriously interests him. Silva picked up on the statement and accepted “The Notorious’” challenge.

Silva held a live stream on his Instagram account to discuss his potential Octagon return. He mentioned the rumored fight against McGregor and noted that he hasn’t talked to the UFC about it (via MMA Fighting):

”I’m waiting for the UFC about my next fight, and I’m training hard,” Silva said. “I accepted the challenge (from) Conor McGregor, but never (discussed) about this fight (with the UFC). But I’m ready, guys. I’m here, I’m training every day. I never lose my focus. I’m waiting for my next challenge.”

The 43-year-old recently snapped a four-fight losing streak. He defeated Derek Brunson via unanimous decision at UFC 208 in February of last year. Silva seems game to fight McGregor, but towards the end of his live stream, “The Spider” said in Portuguese that he thinks McGregor “is afraid to lose, supposedly, to an old man, but I’m here.”

While McGregor initially had Silva on his radar, it’s likely a rematch with Khabib is at the top of his priority list at the moment. With other challenges such as Tony Ferguson, Georges St-Pierre, and others on the table – it’s unlikely we ever see a McGregor vs. Silva bout.

Conor McGregor seems to have his eye on getting back into the UFC’s Octagon soon.

“The Notorious” was defeated earlier this month (Sat. October 6, 2018) at UFC 229 on pay-per-view (PPV). He was submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov in the fourth round, failing to recapture the 155-pound title. Immediately after the loss, McGregor began to suggest a rematch is in order.

However, due to the lopsidedness of the fight, many believe a rematch doesn’t make much sense. At a recent appearance in Boston (via Express UK) McGregor acknowledged he fully intends on getting back into the cage. But due to their post-fight shenanigans, both McGregor and Khabib are dealing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

Once he gets over that hurdle, he’ll go from there:

“I’m looking to get back in, of course,” McGregor said. “We’ll see what happens. Obviously, there is stuff with the Nevada Athletic Commission. So they’ll make a judgment on that and we’ll go from there.”

In a lengthy Instagram post recently, McGregor did note that if he doesn’t get his rematch with Khabib, he’s more than willing to fight the next man in line first:

“If it is not the rematch right away, no problem,” McGregor said. “I will face the next in line. It’s all me always, anyway. See you soon my fighting fans I love you all.”

Conor McGregor’s Attorney Says Cornermen Should Share Blame For UFC 229 Brawl

Conor McGregor’s attorney is hoping that the cornermen for both fighters take responsibility.

Conor McGregor’s attorney, Michael Mersch, has made it known that he hopes that all the cornermen involved in the UFC 229 brawl should take responsibility for their actions.

On Wednesday, the Nevada State Athletic Commission held a hearing regarding this incident. At the meeting, it was revealed that they would give extended the temporary suspension to both McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Following the main event fight, the UFC lightweight champion went flying out of the Octagon. He got into a brawl with some of McGregor’s teammates including his training partner Dillon Danis. There were many people trying to calm down the situation at the UFC 229 pay-per-view event. There were also some cornermen involved in the brawl.

McGregor and Khabib must face their punishment when they find out actual sanctions from the NSAC later this year. The commission will meet on December 10th where they will decide the fates of the two UFC stars.

NSAC chief Bob Bennett has made his stance known by stating that he puts part of the blame on both fighters’ managers.

McGregor’s Attorney Fires Back

However, McGregor’s attorney and former UFC legal counsel member, has fired back with a statement of his own. Those comments are about the cornermen taking the blame as well.

“But for the actions of Mr. Nurmagomedov, none of this would have happened.” Mersch said (via MMAjunkie). “I hope the commission will not just focus on the two fighters in this case. Because I think the commission has a history of looking at the actions of corner people, as well.”

Featherweight fighter Zubaira Tukhugov is a cornerman in question as he jumped the cage and blindsided McGregor. This was in the middle of the chaos that ensued. Mersch stated that although he’s not sure who was involved in the brawl, the NSAC can get those names.

“I don’t pretend to know the names or functions of every single person that was in and out of the octagon post-fight. But I assume that at least some of them were licensed by this commission.”

Mersch continued by stating the NSAC always looks at activities above and beyond the fighters themselves in these cases.

“And this commission, whether it was in the Zab Judah hearings, or the Mike Tyson ‘Bite Fight.’ The commission looks at activities above and beyond the fighters themselves. Once I have a complaint, we’re happy to address it with them.”
