UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has a certain date in mind for his return fight.

That date is the upcoming UFC 227 pay-per-view event. Although his opponent has yet to be determined, the promotion does have plans in place to figure that out.

Woodley suffered a partial labrum tear early in his recent title defense over Demian Maia, which he won by decision. Woodley has been a fighting champion as he has defended it twice in 2017 with winning decisions over Stephen Thompson and Maia.

This tied with three other fighters for the most active 2017 schedule by a UFC champion.

So let’s break it down. First, we have Stephen Thompson taking on Darren Till in the headliner of this weekend’s UFC Liverpool (UFC Fight Night 130) event then we have former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos will take on Colby Covington for the interim welterweight title at the upcoming UFC 225 pay-per-view event.

There is a third option which is Kamaru Usman, who is coming off a big win over Demian Maia at last weekend’s UFC Chile event.

Woodley has gone on record in the past by teasing a return to the Octagon under the UFC banner in August and is now confirming that he plans on returning at UFC 227. He told this news to MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani.

“Spoke to UFC welterweight champion @TWooodley earlier today. He said his surgically-repaired shoulder has fully healed, and he’s hoping to fight on the Aug. 4 UFC 227 card in Los Angeles. Nothing finalized yet.”

The UFC 227 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

This event will be headlined by a bantamweight title fight pitting champion TJ Dillashaw against Cody Garbrandt in a rematch.

The promotion will be announcing more bouts for the upcoming event in the coming weeks. Here is the updated card:

Champ T.J. Dillashaw vs. Cody Garbrandt – for the bantamweight title

Derek Brunson vs. Antonio Carlos Junior

Zabit Magomedsharipov vs. Yair Rodriguez

Bethe Correia vs. Irene Aldana

Graphic Images: Gruesome Leg Injury Sidelines Luke Rockhold

Luke Rockhold’s latest leg injury is not for the squeamish.

Former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold won’t be returning to the octagon anytime soon.

Rockhold was rumored to be moving up to light heavyweight for a bout with two-time title contender Alexander Gustafsson at August’s UFC 227, but according to a report from MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani, a leg injury has postponed his return after he was brutally knocked out by Yoel Romero in his last bout at March’s UFC 221.

Rockhold reportedly re-injured the leg in training last week. He posted a gruesome video showing the stitches he received via Helwani on social media, putting his expected return in October at the earliest:

Gruesome to be sure, and a second video of the graphic scene detailed the stitching even further:

Rockhold took an injured left knee – the same leg which he’s getting stitched in the above videos – into his fight with Michael Bisping at June 2016’s UFC 199, a bout that is still considered one of one of the biggest upsets in mixed martial arts history when ‘The Count’ knocked him out in the first frame to become one of the more unlikely champions the UFC has ever seen.

Helwani said he reinjured the leg last week, although it appears this is a shin injury based on the videos shown.

Since losing to Bisping, Rockhold took over a year off to heal from the aforementioned knee injury and returned to defeat former WSOF two-division champ David Branch last September to earn a title shot at champ Robert Whittaker, who was forced out of their fight with his own long list of ailments.

Romero replaced him and stopped Rockhold, after which the former AKA standout said he was considering a move up to 205 pounds due to the draining weight cut to middleweight. That move will have to wait, at least for now.

Nate Diaz Allegedly Brawls With UFC Veteran At California MMA Event

Nate Diaz supposedly threw down some ‘Stockton Slaps’ last night:

Nate Diaz has been in the news for his rumored bout with Georges St-Pierre this week, and it sounds like the fan favorite is preparing for the fight with some extracurricular activity.

A report from MMAFighting.com this morning stated that Diaz was involved in a confrontation with longtime UFC veteran Clay Guida at last night’s Combate Americas 20: Mexico vs. USA from Sacramento, California, with “The Carpenter” supposedly ended up bloodied.

According to tweets posted by former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) contestant and current Guida teammate Tyler Diamond, Diaz pushed Guida from behind and then slapped him when he got in the middle of the melee:

Diamond further explained the logistics of the situation, claiming that he was simply talking with Guida when he got shoved and was then hit by a member of Diaz’ entourage when he tried to calm things down:

Finally, Diamond issued some trash talk by telling Diaz he “slaps like a bitch” complete with the Stockton superstar’s normal choice of hand gesture:

Diaz was in attendance at the Combate show to support teammate Chris Avila, his longtime training partner who faced Artem Lobov in the UFC at one point.

Guida and Diamond were there to support a different Avila, meanwhile, as their Team Alpha Male compatriot Anthony Avila also competed on the card.

The promotion has reportedly launched an investigation into the situation.

Nate Diaz Claims GSP ‘Cheated’ By Using Steroids For Nick Diaz Fight

Looks like we could truly see Georges St-Pierre vs. Nate Diaz soon…

The post Nate Diaz Claims GSP ‘Cheated’ By Using Steroids For Nick Diaz Fight appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

This week, the mixed martial arts (MMA) world was awash with the out-of-the-blue rumor that legendary former UFC champion Georges St-Pierre would meet longtime lightweight Nate Diaz at August 4’s UFC 227 from Los Angeles.

The rumor came from UFC president Dana White himself, as he insisted the fight would be contested at 155 pounds – a division Diaz hadn’t fought in since 2015 and one St-Pierre has never fought in despite discussing it for years.

There was little in the way of confirmation, however, as both sides stayed exceptionally quiet on the matter.

Some of St-Pierre’s teammates told UFC Tonight analyst Kenny Florian that they hadn’t even heard St-Pierre was entertaining a fight with the younger Diaz, and indeed there were several reasons why it just doesn’t make much sense. For example, the whole concept sounded a bit off given that “Rush” had handled Nate’s older and bigger brother Nick at March 2013’s UFC 158.

This evening, however, could signal that there’s truly some fire burning behind all the smoke, as Nate took to Facebook to post an inflammatory post towards St-Pierre, suggesting he was a cheater by fighting his brother on steroids, coming in overweight, and having ‘his boy’ give Nick a bad i.v.

Now, he continued, the UFC was selling fans “wolf tickets” in reference to Nick’s famous pre-fight tirade before he fought St-Pierre, so the longtime MMA legend could fight himself if he didn’t clear up his so-called issues:

A genius bit of trash talk that will certainly get the loyal-to-the-death legions of Diaz fans talking about Nate’s hopeful return, it would seem he’s moved on from the prospect of fighting Conor McGregor in their oft-discussed trilogy bout – at least for now – as St-Pierre has finally fit the bill of the big names he’ll only return to the octagon for.

This video suggests the younger Diaz is trying to lay the groundwork for what would be a massive if not somewhat confusing showdown in L.A. this summer.

If he is, well, he did a fine job accomplishing that goal.

Are you excited to watch St-Pierre vs. Nate Diaz?
