Volkan Oezdemir Pulled From UFC 227

Volkan Oezdemir has been pulled from this card.

It turns out that Volkan Oezdemir will not be fighting at the upcoming UFC 227 pay-per-view event as originally scheduled and it’s a shame.

News broke on Thursday morning (July 19, 2018) after Ariel Helwani of ESPN.com reported the news on his official Twitter account as Oezdemir is out of his fight at this show due to an injury.

If you recall, he was expected to fight former UFC light heavyweight champion Shogun Rua at UFC Chile then got moved to fight Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 227 and as a result of the former title contender being pulled from this show, the UFC currently seeking a replacement for Gustafsson but the only problem is, with it being on somewhat short-notice, there is no safe bet that he will stay on the card if the promotion can’t find him a replacement as the longtime MMA journalist wrote the following on his official Twitter account:

“Volkan Oezdemir is out of UFC 227 due to injury. He was scheduled to face Alexander Gustafsson on Aug. 4. UFC currently seeking a replacement for Gustafsson but no guarantee he’ll remain on the card. More coming to ESPN shortly.”

Oezdemir was looking to get back in the win column and on track to another title shot as he suffered a second-round TKO loss against Daniel Cormier at UFC 220 in January but now will have to wait it out.

The UFC 227 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

This event will be headlined by a bantamweight title fight pitting champion TJ Dillashaw against Cody Garbrandt in a rematch. Here is the updated card for this upcoming show:

Champ T.J. Dillashaw vs. Cody Garbrandt – for bantamweight title

TJ Dillashaw Says He’s 135-Pound GOAT With Win Over ‘No Love’

Is TJ Dillashaw the best bantamweight ever with a win at UFC 227?

The post TJ Dillashaw Says He’s 135-Pound GOAT With Win Over ‘No Love’ appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

If TJ Dillashaw is able to best Cody Garbrandt for the second consecutive time at UFC 227 next month (Sat. August 4, 2018), the 135-pound champion thinks he should be declared the greatest titleholder the division has ever seen.

Dillashaw recaptured the UFC bantamweight title back in November when he knocked out his former Team Alpha Male teammate Cody Garbrandt in the second round at UFC 217. It extended Dillashaw’s win streak to three and handed Garbrandt the first defeat of his professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career.

Now the pair will headline the UFC 227 pay-per-view (PPV) in their rematch. Dillashaw believes a second win over “No Love” makes him the greatest bantamweight of all time (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“It puts me at the top [of the list as the all-time greatest bantamweight]. I know I’m the best bantamweight ever,” Dillashaw said. “I’ve got a split decision loss to Dominick Cruz and that changed everything, a fight that I thought I won. That changed everything, but I am the best bantamweight in the world.”

“I get to continue to grow my legacy,” he added. “Then I’ll move onto the next challenge and continue to be the best pound-for-pound fighter that I possibly can be.”

Dillashaw’s last defeat inside the Octagon came against Dominick Cruz in 2016. It was Cruz’s first fight back in the UFC in almost two years, and he won back the 135-pound title he never lost. Cruz’s victory came in the form of a split decision. Dillashaw, even two years later, still thinks he won the fight and was robbed on the judges’ scorecards.

Despite the defeat still being a thorn in Dillashaw’s side, he doesn’t think that he needs to rematch Cruz for his legacy to remain intact:

“I don’t think so,” Dillashaw said. “My performances speak for themselves. We’ve got to see if Dominick Cruz can even fight. The guy can’t even get in there anymore, so we’ll see if it comes up, but right now I’ve just got to worry about knocking Cody out in three weeks.”

Gustafsson: I’ve Fought Guys Who Hit ‘Way Harder’ Than Daniel Cormier

Alexander Gustafsson isn’t so hyped on Daniel Cormier’s knockout power.

The post Gustafsson: I’ve Fought Guys Who Hit ‘Way Harder’ Than Daniel Cormier appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Alexander Gustafsson isn’t exactly pumped about the current state of his light heavyweight division.

Thought to be the next rightful contender to champion Daniel Cormier’s throne, “The Mauler” saw a perceived title shot go up in smoke when it was granted to formerly surging challenger Volkan Oezdemir at January’s UFC 220. Cormier dismantled “No Time” with a quickness, and now Gustafsson will face Oezdemir at August 4’s UFC 227 for the expected top spot at 205 pounds.

Yet it won’t guarantee a shot at Cormier even if he does come out on top, because “DC” has teased granting former champ ‘Shogun’ Rua a shot if the Brazilian great can get past Anthony Smith at July 22’s UFC Hamburg before retiring after his heavyweight fight with Brock Lesnar. So Gustafsson may never get his rematch with “DC” after taking him to the limit in a narrow split decision loss at their classic first bout back in 2015.

He’s voiced his frustration with that on social media, but overall, “The Mauler” actually has high praise for his rival. After Cormier knocked out heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic in the main event of last weekend’s UFC 226, Gustafsson expressed his respect for the new two-division champ to Luke Thomas on this week’s episode of The MMA Hour. He wasn’t sure who would win the closely-matched superfight but had a feeling it would be Cormier:

“He did great. I’m impressed. I was impressed by the way he finished Stipe and how he won the fight. I’m very impressed by the guy, he did great.

“I didn’t really have a prediction for that fight because I know it’s a very tough fight to predict, but I had a feeling [that ‘DC’ would win]. ‘DC’ is tough and he’s such a good athlete,”

And even though Gustafsson lost to Cormier at 205 pounds after nearly knocking him out with a hellacious knee, the Swedish star believes heavyweight is the best division for him, as he can eat and enjoy the benefit of his true power while not draining himself to make weight:

“I think he’s better at heavyweight than he is at light heavyweight. I think he’s stronger, he can eat and he doesn’t have to stress about the weight. I think he’ll do even better as a heavyweight. I had a feeling he’d win the fight, but just the way he finished [the fight] — it’s probably the wrong thing to say, but he made it look easy.”

The reason he believes that is because of his experience in fighting Cormier. When they fought at light heavyweight, Gustafsson didn’t believe he hit that hard, adding that he’s fought fighters who hit ‘way harder.’ To him, it was Cormier’s relentless will to keep pushing the pace, a characteristic Gustafsson believed to be the double champ’s best attribute:

“[Cormier’s punching power] wasn’t that bad [when we fought],” Gustafsson said. “I don’t remember him punching me that hard. I’ve been fighting guys that punch way harder, but he’s a very hard worker. He keeps pressuring and he keeps throwing punches. He’s really good with his wrestling and he doesn’t stop working in a fight — I think that’s his biggest strength.”

“The Mauler” hopes to move on and compete for the light heavyweight title soon, and believes an interim version should be created if not having Cormier vacate it outright if he’s going to fight at heavyweight next.

It will all depend on the result of his fight against Oezdemir, of course, so “The Mauler” still has work to do.

Do you want to see him get another shot at Cormier before the champ retires?
