Congrats to CagePotato commenter “PELF” for making the most accurate prediction in last week’s fight-picking contest. His predictions were:

– Junior Dos Santos def. Shane Carwin via unanimous decision (29-28 x 2, 30-27 – one score correct)
– Kenny Florian def. Diego Nunes via unanimous decision (30-27 x 3 – one score correct)

Just one other commenter (“Fedor Penn”) predicted unanimous decisions for both Dos Santos and Florian, and the margin of victory couldn’t have been closer; PELF’s inspired decision to toss in a 30-27 for JDS clinched the win. Despite the fact that three fighters made their UFC debuts on the main card of UFC 131: Dos Santos vs. Carwin, there were still a lot of important fights. A few fighters really raise their stock through impressive performances, while others disappointed.

While this doesn’t necessarily reflect just who won or who lost, some victories are resulting in title shots while some losses are a cause for concern.

Whether it was an unexpected finish or a display of heart, let’s see who really won and lost at UFC 131.

Saturday’s UFC 131 was a big event for the heavyweight division, as the main event between Junior dos Santos and Shane Carwin produced a new No.1 contender to meet UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez.

Meanwhile, the UFC added two more exciting heavyweights to the mix in the Fight of the Night between Dave Herman and Jon Olav Einemo. Herman was able to finish Einemo, but not before Einemo delivered some punishment.

UFC 131 from the Rogers Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia was an action-packed pay-per-view.

The main card was highlighted by the featherweight debut of Kenny Florian as he defeated the highly talented Brazilian, Diego Nunes in an extremely entertaining affair.

Not to be outdone, Mark Munoz capitalized on his wrestling background, boxing talent, and savage ground-and-pound as he secured a controversial decision victory over Demian Maia.

On Spike TV, Sam Stout secured his “Hands of Stone” nickname as he left Yves Edwards unconscious in the center of the Octagon from a hellacious left hook.

And to wrap up the night’s fights, Junior dos Santos exhibited a boxing clinic on the steel-jawed Shane Carwin securing his number one contendership position against the current UFC heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez.

A tremendous fight card with non-stop action caused immediate buzz worldwide. Millions of fans and fighters took to twitter in response to the action inside the Octagon.
