In his two years in the UFC, Dan Hardy has developed a reputation for enjoying the standup battle. He’s knocked out Rory Markham, dropped Marcus Davis, and the threat of his left hook was enough to make Georges St. Pierre design a game plan that put Hardy on his back nine times for a total of nearly 21 minutes of their 25-minute title fight at UFC 111.

Since then, Hardy’s had over five months to address his striking heavy game, and now, he’s saying that while he’ll always love a good brawl, he’s a little more layered than he once was, and that his UFC 120 opponent Carlos Condit may well be the victim of a newfound dimension.

UFC 120 will set European mixed martial arts gate and attendance records when the show bows at the 02 Arena in London, UFC UK president and managing director of international development Marshall Zelaznik said on a Thursday conference call for the event.

Demand for tickets was so high that UFC recently reconfigured the arena to allow additional seats to be made available. Zelaznik later told MMA Fighting that over 17,000 fans would fill the arena, breaking the record of 16,693 from UFC 105 in Nov. 2009.

Michael Bisping may not be a fan favorite in the US, but few would argue that the British star tends to be among the most interesting interviews in the sport. His brash style combined with a willingness to engage in mental warfare with opponents makes him among the most quoteworthy fighters around.

Now 31 years old and with experience to grow on, Bisping feels he’s finally graduated to a maturity level that can move him to elite status. It’s to the point where he’s comfortable enough turning his words on himself. Take Thursday for instance, when the middleweight contender was asked about making a run at the UFC championship, and he answered with typical directness, and a serious dose of self-reflection.

“I’ve been talking about it a bit recently,” he said. “Obviously in the past I’ve talked about wanting to be the champion, being the world champ. It’s ironic. Maybe in the past I didn’t truly believe it. I was just saying it because it’s the thing you’re supposed to say. But now everything’s coming together.

Conclusive Proof that Everyone (Even Dan Hardy) Sounds Smarter with an English Accent

Just a tip, P-Nation: Next time you need to make an important first impression – whether on a first date or a job interview or that guest spot on The Bum Rush you’ve been hoping for — give some serious consideration to affecting an English accent. Essentially, sounding like you’re from across the pond is guaranteed to add a few points to your IQ and hey, it’s working for Dan Hardy. I know this sounds shallow, but something about listening to Hardy break down his upcoming UFC 120 opponent Carlos Condit in his lilting, Nottingham-art-school accent makes me think: “I’d definitely hire this guy.”

Now, we already know this is an illusion. We know that Hardy’s thin veil of smarts falls away in short order when he has to commit his thoughts to pen and paper. In fact, if I had to throw out a blind guess (and you know I will) I’d say Condit would probably best Hardy in most any battle of wits. Unfortunately, the battle of sounding cool when you say shit is already a totally one-sided slaughter in favor of the Englishman.
