UFC 219 emanated tonight (Saturday, December 30, 2017) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. The evening was topped by a women’s featherweight championship tilt between divisional ace Cris “Cyborg” Justino and former Ronda Rousey-killer Holly Holm.

That bout would take home Fight of the Night honors.

Holm did her best to frustrate Cyborg, darting in with a combination before tying up to avoid the Brazilian’s heavy counters. The strategy worked at times, but the former bantamweight champ was never able to mount much effective offense. Cyborg landed hard right-hand counters and kicks to the legs, body, and head of her challenger. Still, Holm refused to go away. Her spirited effort helped both ladies earn an extra $50,000.

Though he did not get the finish, one obvious Performance of the Night went to Khabib Nurmagomedov, who savaged Edson Barboza in the co-feature. The ever-pressuring Russian got his first takedown of the fast-kicking Brazilian halfway through round one and proceeded to dole out one of the cringe-worthy beatings with which he has become synonymous. Khabib seemed to take his foot off the gas a bit in the second half of the fight, but he still easily took the final two rounds from a badly compromised Barboza. Nurmagomedov will leave Vegas $50,000 richer.

Finally, Tim Elliott banked the other Performance of the Night in the lone Fight Pass prelim. The former flyweight title challenger ran a wrestling and grappling clinic on short-notice opponent and UFC newcomer Mark De La Rosa, eliciting the tap via anaconda choke in the second round. Elliott will pocket an extra $50,000 for his dominant effort.

Tim Elliot really has turned the tables around since his re-introduction into the UFC by way of The Ultimate Fighter. Elliot has really proved his mettle and it is visibly evident that he has been getting better and better with every fight. His confidence is growing and so is his sheer ability and skills in the octagon. Elliot has not really had a long time to prepare for Ben Nguyen specifically, because he took up the opportunity on such short notice, but he is still the favorite to win this fight by a rather substantial margin. Furthermore, neither has Ben Nguyen been able to train particularly knowing that he will be fighting Elliot.

Elliot really does not mess about in the ring, from the moment the bell rings till the fight ends, he is always going in for the attack relentlessly, one after the other. Nguyen has powerful striking force and does have the capacity to take Elliot out with one good blow. However, getting that one good blow is not going to be a cake walk by any extent of the imagination. If the fight goes to the floor, Elliot is still well equipped to deal with it because his scrambling and grappling abilities are really second to none in his weight division. Elliot only has his sights set on climbing up the ladder and into one of the top five rankings in the weight division and a win against Nguyen will really get the ball rolling on that ambition.

Nguyen really has to be on point if he wants to cause an upset here. His best strategy going in will be to stay sharp, dodge attacks. stay on the back foot, defend take downs and strike with one of his deadly blows the moment Elliot lets his guard down.

Prediction – Elliot to win by submission

Former UFC flyweight title contender Joseph Benavidez has pulled out of his scheduled flyweight bout against Ben Nguyen at UFC Fight Night 110 due to a torn ACL. It did not take long for the promotion to find someone to replace Benavidez at the event as Nguyen has a new opponent.

Nguyen (17-6) may have lost one former title challenger, but he gained another in Tim Elliott (14-7-1), who will step in to replace Benavidez at the event. UFC officials announced the switch late Wednesday night.

Following his first stint with the promotion that ended in a release due to three consecutive losses, Elliott earned his way back into the promotion through “The Ultimate Fighter 24” tournament where he earned an immediate title shot at UFC flyweight champion and pound-for-pound king Demetrious Johnson. Although he put up one heck of a fight, Elliott came up short in his title fight opportunity against Johnson at The Ultimate Fighter 24 Finale last December. He rebounded from that loss by earning a unanimous decision over Louis Smolka in the “Fight of the Night” at UFC on FOX 24 in April.

On the flip side, Nguyen is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Geane Herrera at UFC Fight Night 101 in November. He has won three of his four fights under the UFC banner.

UFC Fight Night 110 takes place on July 11 in Auckland, New Zealand at the Vector Arena. The main card airs on FOX Sports 1 while the prelims will air on UFC Fight Pass and FOX Sports 1. Mark Hunt vs. Derrick Lewis will headline this event in a heavyweight bout while Derek Brunson vs. Daniel Kelly will serve as the co-main event in a middleweight bout. Here is the updated card for the event:

Mark Hunt vs. Derrick Lewis

Derek Brunson vs. Daniel Kelly

Tim Elliott vs. Ben Nguyen

Ashkan Mokhtarian vs. John Moraga

Dan Hooker vs. Ross Pearson

Damien Brown vs. Vinc Pichel

Mizuto Hirota vs. Alex Volkanovski

Warlley Alves vs. Kiichi Kunimoto
