“Bigfoot” Silva Really Doesn’t Like Josh Barnett

Bigfoot SilvaStrikeforce heavyweight Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (16-2) has already beaten his first opponent in the quarterfinals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Tournament, handing the Russian the second straight loss of his career. Silva now awaits the winner of the Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum bout, which will hopefully take place sometime later this year.

Silva feels that he’ll be facing friend Overeem next, and Josh Barnett in the finals, which would suit him just fine.

Speaking to Sherdog.com, “Bigfoot” Silva says he has no problems with any other fighter in the sport except for Barnett, telling the website that he plans on closing “both of his eyes” if the two meet in the tournament finals.

“I’ve been fighting since 2004 and have never had any issues with another athlete, even the most stuck-up,” explained Silva. “Friendship, for me, is everything, but Josh is a weird guy, a guy who doesn’t greet you when you enter the elevator, doesn’t even say ‘good morning.’ It’s how he treats Brazilian fighters especially. It’s the same thing with [Barnett and] Werdum.

“But when [Barnett] sees Fedor, [UFC President] Dana White or [UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo] Fertitta, he runs to them and stays by their side all the time. He makes me sick. He’s the classic kiss-ass, a rude man …” added Silva. “I really want to face Barnett and I’ve already said I consider him a filthy person, even though he is a great fighter, and that I’ll beat him up and close both of his eyes.”

Silva also gives his unflattering opinion of Brock Lesnar’s recent withdrawal from his upcoming bout with Junior dos Santos at UFC 131 next month.

Daniel CormierDue to injuries suffered in a car accident to Shane del Rosario a few weeks ago, undefeated Strikeforce heavyweight Daniel Cormier (7-0) was left without an opponent for the upcoming Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum event in Dallas next month.

On Sunday, Cormier broke the news that Strikeforce had found him an opponent, that he would be facing longtime mma veteran Jeff “The Snowman” Monson (42-11) at the upcoming June event. Cormier posted the news via his Twitter account (@dc_mma), while also posting a link to the Showtime Sports page for the event showing Cormier vs. Monson as an official bout on the card.

Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum is scheduled to take place on June 18 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. Both men will likely be meeting in a Reserve bout for the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Tournament and will probably fight on the unaired preliminary card.

Cormier is undefeated since his prop debut in the fall of 2009. The former freestyle wrestling champ fought five times in 2010, capturing the XMMA and King of the Cage heavyweight titles that year. Cormier was last in the cage in January on the Strikeforce Challengers: Woodley vs. Saffiedine card, earning a unanimous decision over Devin Cole at the event. It was the first time an opponent had lasted more than two rounds with the heavyweight.

Monson, a former UFC heavyweight contender at one time, has won eight fights in a row, and has fought nine times in the past year. Before he meets Cormier in Dallas, “The Snowman” is scheduled to compete in France on a local card there on May 28, leaving him with only three weeks to prepare for his Strikeforce debut. Monson has fought against such names as Chuck Liddell, Forrest Griffin, Tim Sylvia, Josh Barnett, Roy Nelson, and Sergei Kharitonov.

A lightweight matchup appears to be in the works for the upcoming Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum event in Dallas next month. Meeting in a lightweight bout will be Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante (15-4-1, 1NC) and Justin “The Silverback” Wilcox (11-3).

News of the bout first surfaced on MMAWeekly.com on Friday, noting that both men had agreed to the fight.

Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum is scheduled to take place on June 18 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. The event features the remaining quarterfinal bouts of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament with champ Alistair Overeem taking on Fabricio Werdum, and Josh Barnett, who makes his promotion debut, versus Brett Rogers.

“JZ” Cavalcante has hit a bit of a skid in his career going 1-3 with 1 ‘No Contest’ in his last five fights. The Brazilian hasn’t fought since October of last year, when he made his Strikeforce debut against Josh Thomson at the Diaz vs. Noons II event in San Jose. “JZ” would lose a unanimous decision to “The Punk” at the event. Previous to that loss, he fought for DREAM earning a win over Katsunori Kikuno, as well as losing to Tatsuya Kawajiri and Shinya Aoki.

“The Silverback” Wilcox has won six straight bouts and has already competed this year in April, headlining a Strikeforce Challengers event against Rodrigo Damm. Wilcox earned a first round TKO win due to doctor stoppage earning his tenth victory in eleven fights. He’s fought for Strikeforce for five straight fights, and has headlined two Challengers events, defeating Vitor Ribeiro in November of last year.

Strikeforce Lightweight Division Cleaned Out, Next Opponent For Gilbert Melendez Should Come From The UFC

Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert “El Niño” Melendez (19-2) has been very vocal about his desire to fight the best in the UFC now that both promotions are owned by Zuffa.

Gilbert MelendezStrikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert “El Niño” Melendez (19-2) has been very vocal about his desire to fight the best in the UFC now that both promotions are owned by Zuffa.

He and head coach Cesar Gracie, both feel that there are currently few challenges within the Strikforce 155 lb division, and hope UFC President Dana White can begin matching Gilbert with some of that promotions best before too long.

Melendez has won five straight, and is ranked as the number two or three lightweight in the world among various mixed martial arts websites. He earned a convincing first round TKO win over Tatsuya Kawajiri in April, and will likely meet the winner of a potential matchup between K.J. Noons vs. Jorge Masvidal.

Speaking to MMAWeekly.com, Melendez and Gracie both talked about finding opponents outside of the Strikeforce promotion to find challenging opponents.

“I really do not believe that,” Gracie answered when asked if there are contenders left in Strikeforce for Melendez. “And the reason I can say that is I’m looking at the talent pool they have in there, and I don’t see who they’re going to bring up.

“Guys that are winning are guys like (Shinya) Aoki and we’ve seen that fight. It was five rounds of Gilbert completely dominating the guy and beating him, and I don’t think other guys can even get past Aoki. You’ve seen Gilbert dominate Josh Thomson, and Thomson just recently lost to (Tatsuya) Kawajiri, and then Kawajiri comes over and just gets crushed, no pun intended, by Gilbert Melendez. So for exciting match-ups, I think we’re going to have to go outside of Strikeforce.”

“I’m hoping that Dana (White) and these guys understand that also, and make the dream match-ups that the fans really and truly want. We need to see these guys fight Gilbert Melendez over there.”

Werdum Plans On Being The One To Unite The UFC & Strikeforce Heavyweight Titles

Strikeforce heavyweight, and former UFC fighter, Fabricio Werdum (14-4-1) will make the first step in his quest to be crowned the Worlds best heavyweight when he meets Alistair Overeem on June 18. fabricio_werdum_Strikeforce heavyweight, and former UFC fighter, Fabricio Werdum (14-4-1) will make the first step in his quest to be crowned the Worlds best heavyweight when he meets Alistair Overeem on June 18. Both men are taking part in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Tournament, with the winner moving on to the semifinals where Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva waits.

Werdum scored one of the biggest wins of his career in his last fight, winning a quick first round submission over mma legend Fedor Emelianenko in June of last year. The win has given Werdum confidence that he feels will help him win the Strikeforce tournament, and eventually unite the Strikeforce title with the UFC title in the near future.

Speaking to Graciemag.com, Werdum said he’ll approach UFC President Dana White about unifying the belts once he’s won the Strikeforce heavyweight title.

“I feel confident – just like my last fight against Fedor.”

“I fought Fedor last June and won and now I’m fighting in June again and am going to win again,” he says, “June is my month! I have the same feeling as before, I have the same training camp, the same guys, and the same energy…”

“Everyone told me it wasn’t possible,” he says, “But it’s what I’ve wanted. Everyone said that Strikeforce and UFC were two different shows so it wouldn’t happen, but now with the Strikeforce UFC deal, it’s possible. When I win the Strikeforce heavy weight belt, I’m going to ask Dana (White) if I can try for the unification belt.”

Press Release – SAN JOSE, Calif.: The sport’s fastest-rising stars continue their budding careers when STRIKEFORCE® returns to ShoWare Center in Kent, Wash., on Friday, June 24. In the main event of STRIKEFORCE Challengers, lightweight Caros “The Future” Fodor (8-2) of nearby Kirkland, Wash. defends his home turf when he meets the hard-hitting James Terry (10-2), a protégé of middleweight star Cung Le.

The night’s co-feature is equally explosive, as Woodinville’s Ryan Couture (2-0), the son of UFC® Hall of Famer Randy Couture, looks for his third straight victory when he battles undefeated Matt Ricehouse (4-0).

STRIKEFORCE Challengers also features Lorenz “The Monsoon” Larkin (10-0) taking on Gian Villante (7-2) at light heavyweight, a middleweight bout between Antwain Britt (11-5) and UFC® veteran Danillo Villefort, as well as a women’s 145-pound contest between Julia Budd (1-1) and Germaine de Randamie (2-1).

STRIKEFORCE® Challengers, which is presented by Rockstar Energy Drink, will air LIVE on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

“Washington has become a hotbed for mixed martial arts and we’re excited to head back to Kent with this exciting card featuring local stars Caros Fodor and Ryan Couture,” STRIKEFORCE CEO Scott Coker said. “Our Challengers events have delivered some outstanding fights and we expect nothing less on June 24.”

Tickets for the event are priced at $100, $75, $50 and $25, not including applicable service charges, and are on sale TODAY. Tickets are available at ShoWare Center’s Box Office in downtown Kent, online at ShoWareCenter.com, Facebook.com/ShoWareCenter or by phone at 253.856.6999 or 866.973.9613.

Caros Fodor (fighting out of Kirkland, Wash.), a 27-year-old former Marine, has won three straight STRIKEFORCE bouts, including a third-round TKO of David Douglas in April. Now, the grappling ace seeks his ninth professional win when he meets James Terry (fighting out of Livermore, Calif.) at ShoWare Center. A training partner of former middleweight champion Cung Le, the 30-year-old Terry is riding a three-fight win streak of his own. He would like nothing more than to spoil Fodor’s homecoming by scoring a knockout victory on June 24.

Ryan Couture (fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev.), the son of UFC pioneer Randy Couture, returns to his native Washington with hopes of carrying on his legendary family name. Two straight submission wins have kicked off Couture’s career, and now the 28-year-old faces the toughest test of his career when he locks horns with up-and-comer Matt Ricehouse (fighting out of St. Charles, Mo.) in 155-pound action.

Perhaps no fighter heads to Kent with as much momentum as undefeated light heavyweight Lorenz Larkin (fighting out of Riverside, Calif.) The 24-year-old Larkin has finished eight of 10 opponents, including a knockout of Scott Lighty in his STRIKEFORCE debut in April. “The Monsoon” hopes to keep his streak alive when he enters the cage against 25-year-old Gian Villante (fighting out of Bellmore, N.Y.), whose seven victories have all come by way of stoppage.

Former UFC competitor Danillo Villefort (fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla.) makes his STRIKEFORCE debut on June 24 in search of his fifth consecutive victory. The American Top Team product, known for his slick submissions and heavy hands, expects a war when he meets knockout artist Antwain Britt (fighting out of Virginia Beach, Va.). The 33-year-old Britt has 11 victories, nine of which have come by knockout, and looks to fuel a run in the 185-pound division by besting Villefort.

An outstanding women’s 145-pound content pits Julia Budd (fighting out of Port Moody, British Columbia, Canada) against Germaine de Randamie (fighting out of Utrecht, The Netherlands). Nicknamed “The Jewel,” Budd is a devastating kickboxer with the ability to finish any and all opponents. Her bout with de Randamie could be a slugfest, as “The Iron Lady” has won two straight fights, including a brutal knockout over Stephanie Webber in January.
