Fedor hitting the bag IIThis past weekend news surfaced that Russian heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko (31-3, 1NC) and Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Dan Henderson (27-8) would meet in July. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has stated that it’s a fight that the promotion is working on and that nothing has been finalized at this point.

Meanwhile, ESPN.com has word from Fedor’s management on Saturday that the Russian has accepted this fight.

So it appears that the only thing standing in the way is the paperwork.

M-1 Global’s Apy Echteld, who represents Emelianenko and is in San Diego as part of Gegard Mousasi’s camp for a Strikeforce bout against Keith Jardine at the Valley View Casino Center, said it could be completed as soon as Sunday.

“He agreed. He’s ready to fight,” Echteld said of Emelianenko…

“With his progress from training, I can only think he’ll be back the way he was,” Echteld said of the former Pride champion, who’s fallen in consecutive fights for the first time in his storied career. “If he doesn’t win, he’ll make his own decisions like he does now. If he stops, he stops. But if he wins, I think he’ll continue fighting.”

Emelianenko has lost his last two fights, having been knocked out of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix quarterfinals after a TKO loss to Antonio Silva, and a submission loss to Fabricio Werdum last Summer.

Henderson, meanwhile has won his last two bouts, earning his first Strikeforce title by defeating Rafael Cavalcante last month in Columbus by knockout, and KOing Renato “Babalu” Sobral last December.

Gina Carano - Feb 2011During Saturday nights Strikeforce event, officials announced the addition of three more bouts to it’s upcoming June 18 show in Dallas.

Fan favorite, Gina Carano (7-1) will make her return against an unknown opponent, as well as two heavyweight matchups featuring Dan Cormier (7-0) versus Shane Del Rosario (11-0), and Valentijn Overeem (29-25) takes on Chad Griggs (10-1).

The Strikeforce: Dallas event is expected to take place on June 18 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. The show will feature the second set of Heavyweight Grand Prix Tournament quarterfinals between champ Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum and Josh Barnett vs. Brett Rogers.

It will have been almost two years since Carano had a professional fight, a Strikeforce Women’s title loss to Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos in August of 2009. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker noted during an interview that they had talked with Cindy Dandois about taking the fight, but she was forced to turn it down becuase she was three months pregnant. Carano recently finished filming the movie “Haywire” with director Steven Soderbergh.

Cormier is undefeated in seven professional bouts, which includes winning the KOTC and XMMA heavyweight titles. The former NCAA Division I All-American wrestler had his last fight in January, winning a unanimous decision over Devin Cole at a Challengers event. Del-Rossario will also carry an undefeated record into the cage. He appeared in the opening Grand Prix quarterfinal event in February, having submitted Lavar Johnson with an armbar in the first round.

Overeem, brother to heavyweight champ Ailstair, made his promotional debut at the February 12 event, earning a neck crank submission victory over Ray Sefo. He’s won his last three fights and is 5-2 in his last seven. Griggs has won his last five and has only tasted defeat once, back in 2007. He too appeared on the February show, earning a first round TKO win over Gianpiero Villante.

The winner of the two heavyweight matches will go on to meet in the tournament reserve bout, and may replace any of the Grand Prix participants who become injured during the tournament.

Build Exciting Fights, Bring UFC Fighters To Strikeforce Not The Other Way Around

Strikeforce LogoDespite a shallow talent pool from which to draw challenging opponents for it’s champions, Strikeforce proved once again that they can build exciting events.

Saturday night we saw an emotional Shinya Aoki celebrate his first victory on US soil, we watched a battered and bloody Keith Jardine gut it out for three rounds against Gegard Mousasi, and we saw two champions defend their titles in spectacular fashion.

Lightweight title holder Gilbert Melendez showed the world why he holds a legitimate claim to the No. 1 ranking While welterweight champ Nick Diaz slugged it out for almost five minutes against Paul Daley, to earn his tenth straight win.

To touch on Diaz’ win even further, he did it by fighting Daley where he was the strongest instead of taking the fight to the mat where the Brit is weakest. Even UFC President Dana White Tweeted “Holy fuckin shit!!” in response to the action in the cage.

So if Strikeforce is putting on good shows like this, why should their fighters move to the UFC to fight the best? Maybe the UFC should move their fighters to Strikeforce instead.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship certainly pits some of the best against the best, but fans can never be sure of an exciting match, let alone four standout fights in one telecast.

Diaz last two fights have been exciting to watch, as he’s refused to shy away from either Daley or Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos, despite the Brazilian’s ranking outside of the top 20 he came to fight, and he’s come away the winner both times bringing fans to their feet.

While UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre has ground out four unanimous decision wins in his last five fights, and would have likely done the same against BJ Penn if his corner hadn’t thrown in the towel.

Fans are currently waiting for the next 170 lb contender in either Jon Fitch, widely regarded as a boring fighter, or BJ Penn, who looks to rebuild a sagging record after back-to-back title losses. With both men on the injured list fans and fighters are forced to wait for the rematch, leaving fighters like Carlos Condit, Diego Sanchez, and Thiago Alves waiting on the sidelines for their turn.

Why not throw them into the Strikeforce cage and give them an immediate shot at a title? Condit is certainly deserving of a top fight, he’s only been begging for a shot for months now.

You can also apply this reasoning to other UFC divisions like heavyweight and lightweight, were fighters are being kept in limbo over Cain Velasquez injury and the impending rematch between Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard.

I’m sure fighters like Jim Miller, Anthony Pettis, Melvin Guillard, and Clay Guida would jump at a chance to meet Melendez, and not just for the Strikeforce title, but to prove that they are the best.

So again, why not bring some of the UFC’s best to Strikeforce instead of the other way around?
