Rose Namajunas lands decision win over Tracy Cortez knocks off fake eyelash UFC Denver Highlights

Former two-time undisputed strawweight champion, Rose Namajunas is officially riding a two-fight winning run for the first time since her second title coronation back in 2021, landing a one-sided unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 48-47) victory against short-notice replacement, Tracy Cortez — handing her her first promotional loss in their UFC Denver headliner.

Namajunas, who made her flyweight division landing last year, finally got off the mark at 125lbs earlier this year in another main event fight, landing another decision win over perennial contender, Amanda Ribas.

And seeing a grudge fight with Maycee Barber fall to the wayside ahead of tonight’s Colorado return, Rose Namajunas drew Cortez on short-notice, showing off her precise striking skills from the opening exchange until the final scrapping in the fifth and final round.

Dropping the former Invicta FC prospect in the opening round with a fierce shot, Rose Namajunas sent fans into raptures on social media — with a strike actually knocking off a false eyelash Cortez elected to wear to the Octagon in the opening round to boot.

Avoiding a ploy to land a back-and-forth exchange in the center of the Octagon in the final minute, former champion, Namajunas road out the round to take home a unanimous decision — before staking her claim for a flyweight title fight, or a women’s symbolic BMF championship fight.

Tracy Cortez cuts hair to make weight for UFC Denver fight with Rose Namajunas

Slated to headline her first promotional event tomorrow night on short-notice, surging flyweight contender, Tracy Cortez was forced to shed some significant hair during today’s official weigh-ins, to successfully tip the scales for her main event fight with Rose Namajunas at UFC Denver.

Cortez, who currently holds the number eleven rank in the official flyweight rankings, returns tomorrow night in her premiere main event bout since joining the promotion, fresh from a decision win over Jasmine Jasaduvicius at Noche UFC last September.

And replacing Maycee Barber in tomorrow’s return to Colorado for the organization, Tracy Cortez initially missed weight by half a pound for herfight with former two-time strawweight champion, Namajunas – coming in at 126.5lbs for the main event clash.

Continuing to cut weight following the use of a screening box, Cortez came back to the scales on her second attempt – with her hair in hand, cutting off her locks to successfully tip the scales at 126lbs for her fight with Namajunas – whilst holding back tears.

Boasting an impressive unbeaten Octagon record spanning seven straight fights, former Invicta FC prospect, Cortez has chalked up notable victories in the UFC over the likes of Mariya Agapova, Melissa Gatto, and Vanessa Melo – to go with a decision win over Erin Blanchfield during their time under the Shannon Knapp-led all-female organization.

Tracy Cortez is set for a significant step up in competition this weekend when she takes on Rose Namajunas in the main event when the UFC rolls into Denver, Colorado on Saturday night.

Cortez, who is riding an eleven-fight winning streak into this bout, was initially scheduled to face Miranda Maverick a week later in Las Vegas but when Namajunas lost her original opponent Maycee Barber to injury, the opportunity of a headline slot opposite a former champion was one that Cortez couldn’t turn down.

30-year-old Cortez has won all five of her fights inside the Octagon since signing with the UFC back in 2019 off the back of a win over Mariya Agapova on Dana White’s Contender Series. While she is on an impressive winning streak, this will be the first time she faces an opponent ranked inside the top ten in the UFC’s featherweight division.

Speaking on his podcast Weighing In this week, Josh Thomson was asked by his co-host on “Big” John McCarthy if he thinks taking this fight was a good decision by Tracy Cortez.

“I don’t think it’s a good fight for her” said the former UFC welterweight. “No disrespect to her, I don’t think that…after her last fight against (Jasmine) Jasudavicius or whatever her name is…I think what I saw in that fight was in the later rounds like two-and-a-half/three rounds she started to slow down to the point where…Rose is not that fighter”.

‘She Will Not Slow Down’ – Josh Thomson on Namajunas

“Thug” Rose won the UFC strawweight championship in 2017 by knocking out long-time champion Joanna J?drzejczyk and during her UFC career has won four five-round main events by unanimous decision. Thomson believes that experience of the championship rounds should make the difference come Saturday night.

“Rose has been in plenty of five round fights, she’s trained for five round fights” Thomson continued. “She will not slow down in rounds three and four”.

Thomson also believes that Cortez may be a little out of her depth when she tries to strike with the former UFC strawweight champion.

“She’s got the power to make Rose respect her, I just don’t know if she knows how to get in on the reach. Like she slid in on the Jasudavicius girl with those straight rights then follow up with the left hook, but Rose is a different level of striking”.

Ahead of her main event debut this weekend, UFC women’s flyweight Tracy Cortez has detailed the kind of success she’s envisioning for herself on mixed martial arts’ biggest stage.

Since losing her professional debut under the Invicta FC banner in 2017, Cortez has experienced nothing but her hand raised inside the cage, winning 11 straight fights to establish herself as one to watch at 125 pounds.

After adding the name of Erin Blanchfield to her record in 2019 and subsequently securing a victory on Dana White’s Contender Series, Cortez’s winning run has extended with a perfect 5-0 record in the UFC.

Now, the Phoenix native is set for her toughest test to date in the form of Rose Namajunas. With the former two-time strawweight champion left without an opponent for this weekend’s UFC Fight Night main event in Denver following Maycee Barber’s withdrawal, Cortez has stepped up on short notice.

And beyond making the most of the sizable opportunity awaiting her at the Ball Arena on Saturday night, Cortez is foreseeing an ascent to the highest possible step on the women’s MMA ladder…

Cortez Outlines Lofty UFC Ambitions Ahead Of Main Event Debut

During a recent appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Cortez looked ahead to the shot at title contention that has fallen at her doorstep this weekend in Denver.

In terms of what she hopes to achieve with victories over notable names like “Thug Rose,” the #11-ranked flyweight set her sights on going above and beyond the legacy left behind in the cage by a trailblazer for female MMA.

“You know, I’m very grateful for the way Ronda (Rousey) paved the way for women’s MMA. No one has done it like she has,” Cortez said. “But I say this humbly, I hope to surpass that. She set a goal, and I think us as competitors, we want to keep overstepping these goals and overdoing what our last heroes did.

“I saw the way she moved and (I’m) finessing and tweaking, making it my own and hoping to surpass what she has done,” Cortez added.

Having won all five of her Octagon outings to date and cemented a ranking with her victory over Jasmine Jasudavicius at Noche UFC last September, the next step on Cortez’s journey toward the greatness former bantamweight queen Rousey achieved in the cage is a big one.

To remain perfect in the UFC and notch her first headline triumph, the 30-year-old is tasked with stalling the two-division ambitions of Namajunas.

Tracy Cortez hopes to one day surpass the legacy left behind by Ronda Rousey.

On Saturday night, the Phoenix native will have a chance to take a big step in that direction when she steps in on short notice for a scrap with former two-time strawweight world champion ‘Thug’ Rose Namajunas.

Tracy Cortez

Originally, Namajunas was scheduled the headline the UFC’s return to Denver against rising star Maycee Barber in a fight that feels like it’s been years in the making. Unfortunately, ‘The Future’ was forced to bow out of the bout due to an illness, paving the way for Cortez to step in and shoot her shot against one of the UFC’s most beloved female fighters.

Ahead of her return to the Octagon this weekend, Cortez spoke with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, discussing her upcoming clash and the legacy she hopes to leave behind.

Specifically asked about women’s MMA icon Ronda Rousey, Cortez has the utmost respect for ‘Rowdy,’ but made it clear that her goal is to one day surpass the accomplishments of the UFC’s first-ever female champion.

“I’m very grateful for the way Ronda paved the way for women’s MMA,” Cortez said. “No one has done it like she has, but I say this humbly; I hope to surpass that. She set a goal and I think as competitors, we keep wanting to overstep these goals and [outdoing] what our heroes did.

“I saw the way she moved and [I keep] finessing, tweaking, and making it my own and hoping to surpass what she’s done.”

Tracy Cortez could thrust herself into title contention with an upset against ‘thug’ rose

Cortez is off to a pretty good start, going 11-1 in his mixed martial arts career, including a solid 5-0 run under the UFC banner, earning wins over the likes of Justin Kish, Melissa Gatto, and Jasmine Jasudavicius.

Tracy Cortez

As it stands, Cortez is sitting in the No. 11 spot in the women’s flyweight rankings. If she can bag an upset against Namajunas in her first UFC headliner, she’ll thrust herself into the top 10 and likely just outside the top five. Of course, getting a win over ‘Thug’ is much easier said than done.

After coming up short in her flyweight debut against Manon Fiorot, Namajumas bounced back with a solid showing against Amanda Ribas, immediately putting her into the 125-pound title picture.
