Renato LOS ANGELES – It wasn’t exactly a definitive ending, but Renato “Babalu” Sobral did just enough to edge out Robbie Lawler in the main event of Strikeforce: Live at the Nokia Theater in a rare Wednesday night event.

The catchweight bout turned out to be a back-and-forth affair, with Sobral doing more damage from distance and Lawler trying to load up for the one blow that would end it all.

While Lawler was successful in avoiding most of Sobral’s takedowns, virtually negating the ground game entirely down the stretch, he wasn’t quite as effective in the striking exchanges, and the result was all three judges scoring the bout 29-28 in favor of Sobral.

The judges’ decision — 29-28 all around — could have easily gone either way, but Babalu did just enough to win, and he said afterward that he’s hoping to fight Dan Henderson next.

Q: Why are we watching a Strikeforce event on Showtime, in the middle of the damn week, ten days before a bigger Strikeforce event on Showtime?

A: Why the hell not?

The stakes are relatively low, but the matchups are promising. In the main event, Renato Sobral and Robbie Lawler slug it out in a moneyweight battle for a potential title shot down the road. Welterweights Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos and Marius "The Whitemare" Zaromskis meet in a guaranteed basher. Plus, Army Staff Sergeant Tim Kennedy defends his country’s honor against South African veteran Trevor Prangley, and KJ Noons returns to the cage against Conor Heun. Round-by-round results await you after the jump. Refresh the page every few minutes for all the latest, and let’s hope these fights end early so I can go to bed.
