The main card of UFC 153 started out with an exciting battle between welterweight title hopefuls Rick Story and Demian Maia Saturday in Rio de Janeiro.

Rick Story tried to come out with quick and powerful strikes early, but Demian Maia wasted little time in working Story to the canvas. It was the beginning of the end, as Story could do little but pray for a mistake.

Fighting in his home country, Maia used punches from half guard to soften up Story while patiently waiting for an opening. It didn’t take long, as Story gave up his back and succumbed to a rear-naked choke halfway through the first round. It was a gruesome sight, as blood poured from the mouth and nose of Story before he eventually conceded defeat.

This was the second first-round stoppage for Maia in as many bouts since dropping down from the middleweight division. At UFC 148, he defeated judo master Dong Hyun Kim in only 47 seconds.

Story suffered his third loss in four contests, although this is the first time he has been stopped in 20 professional bouts. Prior to this contest, a decision victory over Brock Jardine stopped a two-fight skid at the hands of Martin Kampmann and Charlie Brenneman.

What is next for each combatant? Is Maia now on the fast track toward title contention at 170 pounds? Will Story be able to recover from such a humiliating loss?

Stay tuned to Bleacher Report for up-to-the-minute results from UFC 153, as well as post-fight analysis and more.

Maia vs Story: Demian Maia Will Tap out Rick Story

Demian Maia made his welterweight debut at UFC 148 with a first-round TKO victory over Dong Hyun Kim. The stoppage marked his first non-decision win since a triangle choke against Chael Sonnen in 2009.

He will get his second in a row over Rick Story at UFC 153.

His victory over Kim was a result of an injury, but an injury stemming from Maia’s takedown. Do not expect a clouded stoppage against Story.

Story burst on to the welterweight scene with back-to-back victories over Johny Hendricks and Thiago Alves. He then jumped in on short notice to fight Nate Marquardt at UFC Live in June 2011.

Marquardt failed to receive medical clearance and then Charlie Brenneman stepped in. His win streak stopped that night. Story then tried to rebound against another top contender in Martin Kampmann, but was defeated at UFC 139.

The “Horror” Story got back on track with a decision victory over Brock Jardine in June, but Maia will show that he is simply a solid gatekeeper for the UFC’s 170-pound division.

Story has heavy hands and good wrestling, but that is nothing new for Maia. At middleweight he has fought against the likes of Ed Herman, Nate Quarry, Chael Sonnen, Nate Marquardt, Dan Miller, Mark Munoz, and Chris Weidman. In one facet or the other, and in some cases both, Story does not equal those men.

Maia will be even more acclimated to the new division. This will help him be prepared for a three-round battle against Story.

Story will want to keep the fight on the feet, but if there has been one area where Maia has improved his technique it is his striking. He continues to become a more technical striker in each of his bouts, and does not rely on power like Story.

While Story is very much a live underdog in this matchup, he does not have many ways to finish the fight. At some point in this fight, the two men will end up on the mat. That is where Maia will return to his finishing ways and stop Story.

Maia began his UFC career with five consecutive submissions, with four of those being named submission of the night. Nine fights have now passed with zero submission wins—that changes on Saturday night.

The Brazilian will be able to withstand the striking exchanges and clinch with Story. From that position, Maia is able to take down most in the world. His wrestling may not be the best, but his takedowns from the clinch are excellent.

Once he is on top, you can start your stopwatch for the finish.

Maia will grab his second win at welterweight and assert himself as a true factor in the division. Story is an excellent gatekeeper for the division, and Maia will walk through to the other side.

UFC 153: Rick Story Looking to Battle His Way Back to Top 10 Status

Last year Rick Story‘s name was on the watch list of surging contenders in the UFC welterweight division. The Vancouver, WA native had put together an impressive six-fight win streak, and with his victory over Johny Hendricks and next Thiago Alves at UFC 130, positioned himself in the Top 10 of his weight class.

Story was ready to square off with the division’s best, and when the opportunity to step up on short notice to fight Nate Marquardt arose, he attempted to seize it. But it was a fight he would never see, and following a storm of circumstance which resulted in a loss to last minute replacement Charlie Brenneman, Story suddenly found himself once again on the outside looking in.

“It still bugs me to this day,” Story told Bleacher Report. “I hadn’t experienced that before and didn’t know how to deal with the situation. I still lost and I have to accept it. I have to prove myself. Everyone almost remembers me for that fight. They don’t realize I’ve had two fights since. Every conversation I hear people are saying they saw my last fight with Brenneman. I get haunted by it quite a bit.”

The 28 year old attempted to get back on track as quickly as possible, but a unanimous decision loss in his next outing against Martin Kampmann kept that from happening. It was the first time in his career Story had tasted defeat in back to back outings. The Brave Legion fighter refused to focus on the negatives and channeled that energy into his training. He returned to the gym and locked his sights on making his way back to where he feels he belongs—amongst the divisional elite.

After getting back to the win column at the expense of Brock Jardine at UFC on FX 4, Story is focused on the next task in Demian Maia at UFC 153 this Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“When the fight with Jardine was over it was a sense of mission accomplished,” Story said. “I accomplished what I wanted to. I didn’t get it done up to my expectations because when I go out to fight I want to lay a beating on my opponent and make everyone watching happy that watches me fight. I don’t want to be one of those people where fans don’t want to see me fight. I don’t want to be in that category. I want to be an exciting fighter everyone looks forward to seeing fight.

“This fight with Maia is going to be a dang fight. It’s not going to be a fight like my last fight with Brock Jardine—I can tell you that much. This going to be way more action packed.”

The bout between Story and Maia is the classic “wrestler vs. jiu-jitsu” matchup. While both fighters have shown a willingness to stand and exchange in recent years, Story isn’t sugar-coating what he will be dealing with on Saturday night. Story knows the threats Maia brings to the table, and is looking forward to testing the Brazilian’s heart in his home country.

“I probably won’t feel anything different until I hear my name announced,” Story said about fighting in Brazil. “I’ll probably get booed but as of right now it doesn’t feel different. I’m not really paying attention to any of that. I am paying attention to whether I’m the underdog in this fight or not. That is motivation for me because it seems the underdog angle is where I have been coming from my entire life. It is a place of comfort for me and gives me more motivation.

“All the facts are out there about this fight. It is what it is. Everyone knows my strengths and everyone knows Demian‘s strengths as well. I believe wrestling is better than jiu-jitsu as far as fighting is concerned. High level wrestling is far more adaptable to MMA than jiu-jitsu is in my opinion, especially where striking is concerned. If it gets slowed down and turns into a grappling match, I’m going to have my hands full, but everyone knows the facts in this fight. There aren’t any secrets here.”

The fight will only be the second appearance for Maia at 170 pounds. A freak injury to Dong Hyun Kim halted his welterweight debut inside of the first minute and didn’t reveal much about Maia’s skill set in his new weight class.

“Making the weight is always an issue for anyone fighting,” Story said. “Him coming down and having a 47 second fight with Dong Hyun Kim doesn’t really show anything. Anyone can be strong for the first minute of any fight. This is going to be new ground for him and I’ll be happy to take him there.”

While his immediate focus rests on Maia, Story’s ultimate goal is to become a UFC champion. It was a road he was traveling at a steady pace, and while the path has taken some twists and turns, he is confident he can not only regain the position, but take himself to the top.

It will all come down to Saturday night at UFC 153. Story is aware of where he currently stands in the division and believes he belongs in the next tier of the weight class. With that being said, he is excited and ready to prove it inside the Octagon.

“A win over Maia will definitely sling shot me back in the direction I want to go,” Story said. “I am not going to make any predictions about where it is going to put me. I know who I have beaten, who I can hang with, and where I belong. I just have to prove it. I have to get it done and then wait for the next call from the UFC to see where they want me to go.

“I’d like to say thanks to my team at Brave Legion and my coach Pat White. I’d also like to say thank you to my teammates Luis Iniguez, Tommy Takemoto, Hamza Salim, and my brother Tyler Story for helping me prepare for this fight. I’d also like to thank my sponsor Hayabusa.”

UFC Booking Orgy: Demian Maia vs. Rick Story, John Dodson vs. Jussier Da Silva + More

(“Now, Demian! Use the muscle-spasm death touch that I taught you!”)

Demian Maia‘s welterweight debut at UFC 148 was over before it really began, thanks to a poorly timed muscle spasm suffered by Dong Hyun Kim. But the former middleweight title contender will be getting another chance to make an impression against Rick Story. Their bout is scheduled to take place at UFC 153 (October 13th, Rio de Janeiro), a card that is quickly stacking up with top Brazilian talent. Story recently outpointed newcomer Brock Jardine at UFC on FX: Maynard vs. Guida, which snapped a two-fight losing streak against Charlie Brenneman and Martin Kampmann.

Speaking of Brenneman, “The Spaniard” has booked his return fight after being choked out by Erick Silva in June. He’ll be appearing at UFC 151: Jones vs. Henderson (September 1st, Las Vegas) against TUF 11 competitor — and former Crocodile Hunter bodyguardKyle Noke, who is coming off of two losses at middleweight and will be making his welterweight debut.

– After winning all of his first three UFC appearances, Tristar gym product Francis Carmont will compete on his home turf against Tom Lawlor, at UFC 154: St. Pierre vs. Condit (November 17th, Montreal.) Lawlor is coming off a 50-second Knockout of the Night performance against Jason MacDonald in May.

– The UFC has confirmed more fights for their UFC on FX 5: Browne vs. Bigfoot card (October 5th, Minneapolis). Notably, a heavyweight matchup between Matt Mitrione and Rob Broughton — originally scheduled for this weekend’s UFC on FOX 4 card, until Broughton pulled out due to injury — has been re-set for the UFC on FX 5 lineup. Broughton has dropped consecutive decisions to Travis Browne and Phil De Fries, while Mitrione will try to bounce back from his decision loss to Cheick Kongo at UFC 137. And on the other end of the fighter-size spectrum, TUF 14 bantamweight winner John Dodson will make his latest flyweight appearance against much-hyped newcomer Jussier da Silva, in a match that could very well produce the #1 contender in the 125-pound division.

UFC 153 will take place on October 13 from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The card is beginning to fill up.

Monday, it was reported that Jon Fitch would meet Erick Silva, while today Rick Story announced that he was set to face Demian Maia on the upcoming card:

Story (14-5) is 1-2 in his last three UFC fights after opening his UFC career by going 6-1. The 27-year-old Story has seen his stock within the welterweight division take a tumble since his two recent losses. The fight against Maia, a former title contender in the middleweight division, provides Story an opportunity to gain some traction among the 170-pounders.

Maia (16-4) dropped to welterweight for his last contest, earning a 47-second TKO victory over Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 148. The stoppage was due to what Kim’s translator called “a freak accident.” Kim was unable to continue after suffering a muscle spasm, but a win’s a win and it goes down in the record books as a fast TKO for Maia.

The win was the first stoppage for Maia, a gifted grappler, since he stopped Chael Sonnen at UFC 95 in February 2009.

Lately Maia has been concentrating on showcasing his striking game more than his jiu-jitsu skills and it has not paid off. He had gone 4-4 between the Sonnen and Kim fights with seven of those fights going the distance. The only fight in that group that ended early was a 21- second knockout loss to Nate Marquardt.

UFC 153 will be headlined by a featherweight title bout between champion Jose Aldo and Erik Koch. In addition to the aforementioned bout between Fitch and Silva, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will face Glover Teixeira.

UFC on FX 4 Prelim Results: What We Learned from Rick Story vs Brock Jardine

What We’ll Remember About This Fight

A new and improved Rick Story did everything in his power to make sure that he didn’t end up losing his third straight fight inside the Octagon, and after outworking Brock Jardine for almost the entirety of their three round fight, he did just enough to save his job.

Story is now back in the win column for the first time since he won a decision against Thiago Alves at UFC 130 and handed Jardine the loss in “The Machine’s” UFC debut.

What We Learned About Rick Story

Rick Story wasn’t taking any chances tonight.

In the past, we’ve seen “The Horror” willing to trade on the feet for a while before trying to work his signature ground and pound, but even if he did have a slight advantage on the feet, he didn’t want to test it against Jardine.

It wasn’t the most exciting fight in Story’s career, but he dominated on the mat and possibly saved his roster spot. Overall, it was exactly what he needed.

What We Learned About Brock Jardine

Despite getting thrown to the wolves against Story in his UFC debut, Jardine at least showed he belongs in the Octagon in his first career UFC fight.

Jardine was able to escape from the ground numerous times, despite a fellow wrestler doing his best to hold him down. If his striking was a little tighter, he would have had more opportunities on the feet to give Story some trouble.

What’s Next for Rick Story

It was a much needed win for Story, but he’s still going to need to work his way back up the welterweight ladder if he wants to get back into title contention.

Matt Brown won a solid fight earlier tonight, and with “The Immortal” now having won three fights in 2012, it’s time to give him a step up in competition against Story.

What’s Next for Brock Jardine

It wasn’t the UFC debut that he was hoping for, but Jardine wasn’t terrible. He’ll definitely get another shot inside the Octagon.

A fight with Ricardo Funch, who lost to Dan Miller on the Facebook prelims earlier tonight, would be a decent matchup, but if Funch ends up getting the boot from Joe Silva, it may end up being better for Jardine to fight a top prospect making his debut.
