Former UFC Fighter Sage Northcutt Makes Move to PFL After ONE Championship Departure

After stints with the UFC and ONE Championship, ‘Super’ Sage Northcutt has officially signed with the Professional Fighters League.

According to a report from Mike Bohn of MMA Junkie, Northcutt has inked a deal with the promotion and is expected to make his debut in 2025.

Northcutt first burst onto the mixed martial arts scene in 2015 under the UFC banner. During his three-year run with the promotion, the Texas native scored himself a solid 6-2 record with noteworthy wins against Michel Quiñones, Thibault Gouti, and Zak Ottow.

After fighting out his contract in 2018, Northcutt traded in the Octagon for the Circle, signing with ONE Championship in search of greener pastures and a greater opportunity to compete.

Unfortunately, Northcutt’s plan backfired when he suffered a horrifying 29-second knockout in his promotional debut against Cosmo Alexandre. ‘Super’ was left with eight facial fractures that required nine hours of surgery to repair.

The injury put him on the shelf for four years before making his return to ONE in May 2023. Northcutt secured a quick-fire submission victory over Ahmed Mujtaba at ONE Fight Night 10 and was later scheduled for a scrap against Japanese MMA legend Shinya Aoki in January.

Unfortunately, that fight never came to fruition after Northcutt pulled out of the bout hours before it was scheduled to go down after his coaches failed to obtain visas to corner him at the event in Tokyo.

“I sent ONE Championship the necessary paperwork they required to get my coaches visas 48 days ahead of the event,” Northcutt wrote on social media. I was told by them over the phone and by text my main jiu-jitsu coach Fabio Prado did not need a visa since I paid for his airfare flights and trip so he was not classified as a working employee that needed a visa and that my other coach could get in as a tourist so he didn’t need one either.

“My coaches were there for almost a week, and I was not informed that two of them could not coach until hours before my match. I received a text from an unknown number that texted me for the first time that day that was a ticket salesman asking me about getting my two coaches complimentary tickets to watch my fight in the audience. I personally believe that ONE Championship was not going to inform me that my coaches were not allowed to corner me until I arrived at the arena to fight if I did not hear from a ticket salesman hours earlier.”

Northcutt exited the promotion shortly after, wrapping up a run that saw him compete just twice over five years.

Heavyweight Trilogy Booked: Vadim Nemkov vs. Corey Anderson on January 25

Vadim Nemkov and Corey Anderson will meet in a heavyweight trilogy fight at the Road to Dubai Champions Series on January 25, 2025, at Coca-Cola Arena, which the PFL recently announced.

Vadim Nemkov vs. Corey Anderson

The bout will feature the last two Bellator Light Heavyweight Champions facing off in the Heavyweight division. Vadim Nemkov (18-2, 1 NC) and Anderson (18-6, 1 NC) will fight in the co-main event. Vadim Nemkov and Anderson first fought in the 2022 Bellator Light Heavyweight World Grand Prix finals, where their bout ended in a no contest due to an accidental clash of heads. The two met again later that year, with Nemkov winning to retain his title. Anderson has since claimed the Bellator Light Heavyweight title, defeating Phil Davis and Karl Moore.

Three more bouts have been confirmed for the card. Undefeated British fighter Ibragim Ibragimov (8-0) will face Ireland’s Kenny Mokhonoana (5-1) in a Featherweight contest. Khasan Magomedsharipov (10-0), the younger brother of Zabit Magomedsharipov, will take on Irish fighter Nathan Kelly (11-2), who is on an 11-fight win streak. In a Bantamweight match, Russia’s Renat Khavalov (8-0) will meet Brazil’s Cleiver Fernandes (9-1), a former Shooto Brazil Bantamweight Champion.

The main event will see Bellator Lightweight Champion Usman Nurmagomedov (18-0) defend his title against Ireland’s Paul Hughes (13-1), who recently defeated AJ McKee at the Battle of the Giants. The event will feature two Dagestan vs. Ireland bouts, with further details on the undercard to come.

Nemkov, a protege of Fedor Emelianenko, is making his second appearance in the Heavyweight division after a win over Bruno Cappeloza earlier this year. He now faces Anderson in the Road to Dubai series.

Rico Verhoeven vs. Francis Ngannou

The long-reigning heavyweight king of kickboxing Rico Verhoeven wants a match against Francis Ngannou, the lineal UFC champion and current PFL heavyweight titleholder. This would be a battle of combat sports superstars.

Rico Verhoeven vs. Francis Ngannou

The Dutch-born Rico Verhoeven has held the GLORY heavyweight kickboxing world title for a decade and has an incredible 11 title defenses to his name. Along the way, he’s defeated incredible fighters such as Badr Hari, Jamal Ben Saddik, and many others. Earlier this year he defeated three opponents in a single night to capture the Grand Prix title. Now, he will look to defend his throne at Glory Collision 7, on December 7, against Levi Rigters.

Cameroon’s Francis Ngannou entered the UFC and quickly made a name for himself due to his fearsome power. He captured the heavyweight crown with a series of knockout wins and defended his UFC before leaving the organization. He then took on blockbuster boxing matches against heavyweight boxing royalty before capturing the PFL MMA world title by first-round knockout.

Both Rico Verhoeven and Francis Ngannou have experience across multiple combat sports; each man has competed at the professional level across Kickboxing, MMA, and boxing. However, Ngannou has far more experience in MMA while Verhoeven has far more experience in kickboxing.

Rico Verhoeven discussed the match with me in an interview, he explained:

“I would love that. That would definitely make sense, especially if we’re talking about the baddest man on the planet. Absolutely. Yeah, I think we’re both in that conversation. MMA, boxing, and kickboxing—let’s throw everybody in one jar and put them all together. Let’s do it!”

Both the PFL and GLORY would likely be okay doing a crossover event, but picking the right regulations would be an issue. As for the rules and gloves, Verhoeven is ready for anything. He continued:

“Let’s see what they offer and what they have in mind. A boxing match would be nice. It would be interesting because we both come out of our own worlds and do something else. Of course, in MMA, he would have an advantage. In kickboxing, I would have the advantage. Let’s see.”

Interestingly, Ngannou and Verhoevern have actually trained together before. The Dutch striker said:

“The training we had was so light, it was just fun. I was in town, and we were just hanging out. I know Eric is his trainer, and he’s really good. We just had fun, showed him some stuff I use within kickboxing, and yeah, we just hung out.”

Rico Verhoeven vs. Francis Ngannou

Francis Ngannou currently has no match scheduled in the near future. Rico Verhoeven is looking to cement his place as an all-time great in kickboxing with another defense of his title booked for December 7 at Glory Collision 7 facing the dangerous kicker Levi Rigters.

“She’s never been stopped. Shevchenko didn’t stop her. People thought [Santos] beat [Shevchenko]… Erin Blanchfield went 5 rounds with her. I just got in there and made it look like another on the list.”

Ditcheva added that she has loads of respect for the skills and strength of Santos as well.
