Before his Versus fight this weekend, we talked with Jon “Bones” Jones trainer, Greg Jackson.

Jackson revealed some of his pre-fight training tactics with Jones, although didn’t mention anything like, “absolutely fucking demolish your opponent in under a round.”

Tried to corner Jackson on if he thought Vlad wasn’t a worthy opponent for Jones, but dude is a pro, and no such luck.

Forrest Griffin is ready to plug his book, but he’s not ready to book a fight.

The former UFC light-heavyweight champ just launched a publicity tour for his new book, “Be Ready When the S— Goes Down,” so expect some random, choice sound bytes over the next few weeks. The first came Tuesday, when Griffin was asked about the possibility of facing Jon Jones. After explaining that he’s not accepting any fights as he continues to recover from shoulder surgery, Griffin marveled at Jones’ rapid ascent.

“That’s just ridiculous,” he said in an interview with WWUZ. “[Vladimir] Matyushenko‘s been around a decade. He fought Tito [Ortiz] for 25 minutes. He’s a great guy. So I haven’t really been paying attention, but I keep hearing he’s the next big thing, and I’m inclined to believe it.”

Two years ago, I became one of the first people aboard the Jon Jones bandwagon. At the time, I’d just watched the largely unknown Jones win his UFC debut, beating Andre Gusmao by decision in a UFC 87 prelim. Beforehand, I’d heard bits and pieces about Jones’ athleticism, work ethic and drive, and as the fight went on, I found myself impressed by what I was watching. Jones was not polished, but there was no denying his raw tools.

And then there was his poise. Only 21 years old, with just a few months of training under his belt, and fighting on three weeks’ notice, he didn’t portray a hint of nervousness while fighting before 15,000 people. After it was over, and he was declared the winner by decision, I texted my cameraman John Moody (at the time I was working for NBC), and told him that we needed to interview Jones. The kid, I said, was definitely going to be somebody.

Five fights later, Jones has yet to disappoint. And even though I’ve spent quite a bit of time writing about Jones’ incredible promise, I also think it’s very necessary to slow down the hype train a bit as he steams towards contender status.

Fighters who work with Greg Jackson frequently comment on Jackson’s ability to formulate the perfect game plan for any opponent. But Jackson says that with one of his pupils, Jon Jones, the challenge is to avoid constrain him with any particular game plan.

“What we want to do with Jon is keep him really creative, but work solid foundation basics at the same time,” Jackson said in an interview with Fight Magazine. “Work his timing, work his rhythm, but also work just jab-cross so he’s got a good balance of both and just let him create. It’s important for an artist like Jon not to be limited by a certain game plan, to a certain thing, but to just let his timing flow and get him in situations where he can show his creativity.”

After dismantling Vladimir Matyushenko in just under two minutes at UFC on Versus 2 last night, Jon Jones woke up early this morning, put on a nice suit, and sat down for a quick chat with ESPN’s SportsCenter.

Nothing spectacular came out of the appearance. He came off as humble, yet confident – the always elusive down-to-earth pro athlete. He cracked a smile while admitting that a UFC ban on elbows would wreak havoc on his game plan, and, when asked who he’d like to fight next, he even resisted what must have been an overwhelming urge to tell James Toney exactly what would happen if the boxer attempted to follow through on his plan to slap Jones in the face.

Jon Jones Wants to Face Top 3 Fighter Next

Yes, if you missed the fight last night on Versus you likely know by now, that Jones quickly took “The Janitor” to the mat and promptly began cleaning the floor with his head via a flurry of elbows. As most expected, Jones cruised to victory over the accomplished decade plus vet, and today the hype spotlight is more scalding bright than ever before. Case in point, everyone wants to know who Jones wants to fight next, and speaking after the bout he reportedly stated (thanks to MMA Weekly for the quote):

“There’s the champion. He’s the toughest guy right now. He’s very well-rounded and is a great striker. Just the top three contenders that I really want to push myself against,” said Jones. “I really feel that needs to happen.”

The report furthered that Jones was referring to Shogun Rua (obviously), Lyoto Machida and “Rampage” Jackson. What about Rashad Evans? Jones trains with “Sugar” so that’s apparently in the ‘don’t go there’ category. What did Dana White have to say? After the “dust settles” in the upcoming schedule, Jones will reportedly take on someone in the top eight. Cool beans. And oh yeah, Jon, the post-fight “stay classy San Diego” bit was gold…
