Reigning UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk has her next fight set, as sport.pl has reported that she will defend her title against Jessica Andrade in the co-main event of UFC 211 on May 13, 2017 in Dallas, Texas.

“Joanna Champion” is undefeated as a professional, while also boasting a perfect 7-0 UFC record. The Polish Striker has defended her 115-pound title four consecutive times, most recently edging out Karolina Kowalkiewicz in a back-and-forth five-round war at this past November’s UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden in New York.

Andrade, on the other hand, is currently ranked No. 4 in the strawweight rankings, as she possesses a 7-3 Octagon record. She is currently riding a three-fight win streak that includes victories over former title challenger Jessica Penne, Joanne Calderwood and Angela Hill. Two of those victories also came by way of stoppage.

UFC 211 is set to be headlined by a heavyweight title rematch between champion Stipe Miocic and former titleholder Junior Dos Santos.

In this installment of The MMA News Archives, we go back in time to Joanna J?drzejczyk setting the goal of becoming a UFC flyweight.

For much of her storied UFC career, Joanna J?drzejczyk has been known as the “strawweight queen.” And that is a throne and moniker that she is working towards reclaiming, starting with her big fight tonight against Zhang Weili at UFC 275.

But as it happens, J?drzejczyk always wanted the UFC to open up a flyweight division. In fact, right before she lost the title to Rose Namajunas in November 2017, she was planning on going up to attempt becoming a double champion.

J?drzejczyk would eventually have her opportunity to win the flyweight title when she fought Valentina Shevchenko for the vacant title at UFC 231, but J?drzejczyk lost via unanimous decision.

Latest News

Joanna J?drzejczyk hasn’t spoken about the flyweight division as of late. All of her attention is on defeating Zhang at UFC 275 tonight in what Dana White has confirmed to being a #1 contender’s bout. If she were to achieve that, she would be next in line for current champion Carla Esparza, whom J?drzejczyk defeated to win the strawweight title back in 2015.

If J?drzejczyk does ultimately reclaim the strawweight title, perhaps she’ll revisit the plans she laid out in the article below and take another crack at the flyweight title.

The following story is presented in its original, unaltered form, courtesy of The MMA News Archives.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk is hoping to have another successful year in 2017.

The reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) strawweight title holder is in the United States set to prepare with American Top Team for her next bout. Her likely opponent is Jessica Andrade, who defeated Invicta FC 115-pound champion Angela Hill.

Much has been made about a potential women’s flyweight division being introduced in the UFC. While nothing has been made official, many fighters and analysts have been calling for the division to come to fruition.

The general feeling is that there is more talent to beef up that weight class as opposed to the women’s featherweight division. That class was originally meant for Cris Cyborg, but with her situation with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, she could be out of action for a year.

UFC’s inaugural women’s 145-pound title match-up will take place this Saturday night (Feb. 11) at UFC 208. Holly Holm will face Germaine de Randamie. Outside of that bout, the division is left in limbo.

Jedrzejczyk recently told Flo Combat that she would welcome the 125-pound division. Despite having unfinished business at 115 pounds, the Polish champion is confident she can make a run at 125 pounds.

“Sure, if they open the 125 [pound] division I will go up. I want to keep on fighting in 115 and 125 because like I said, with Perfecting Athletes I know I can do this and stay healthy. Definitely I would like to do this, but I have very big plans for this year in the 115 [pound] division. I want to fight somewhere in April or May, then maybe summertime, and then at the end of the year in Madison Square Garden again.”

Jedrzejczyk has been on a tear. At a perfect 13-0 with five finishes, the champion has yet to be solved. She won the strawweight title back in March 2015 and has already made four successful title defenses. Her last win was, for the most part, dominant. She defeated Karolina Kowalkiewicz by unanimous decision.

Jessica Andrade Eyeing Bout With Joanna Jedrzejczyk This Spring

No. 5-ranked UFC women’s strawweight contender Jessica Andrade established herself as the next 115-pound title contender with an exciting unanimous decision victory over Invicta FC champion Angela Hill at last night’s (Feb. 4, 2017) UFC Fight Night 104 in Houston, Texas.

Not only is Andrade eyeing a fight with champion Joanna Jedrzejczk next, but she feels as if she should now be considered the Invicta champion as well:

“I think by beating Angela today, I became Invicta champ,” Andrade said (Via MMAJunkie). “So I want to unify my belts. I want the opportunity to fight Joanna. Joanna, do you want a fight? I’m here. April, May, June – it doesn’t matter the date. I’m ready. I’ll fight you no matter what happens.”

Speaking on her fight with Hill, Andrade said that she could have taken the fight to the ground, but she elected to stand and strike, which is why the fight ended up being as intriguing as it was:

“It was an incredible fight,” Andrade said. “I didn’t imagine that Angela would be able to take so many shots, and I was able to give it my best. I could have taken the fight to the ground. I could have submitted (her), but I wanted to strike. It was an incredible fight. I can only be thankful.”

UFC President Dana White shared the same sentiment:

“In the women’s divisions, that’s one of the greatest fights you’ll ever see,” the UFC boss said. “I mean, that fight was incredible. Both girls were getting hit with bombs. What a great fight.”

How do you expect Andrade to match up against Jedrzejczyk?

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is highly unpredictable and championship level MMA shares this sentiment. Simply put, anything can happen in a fight and we learned that throughout 2016, especially in the UFC, the world’s largest mixed martial arts promotion.

Specifically regarding title fights, we saw 10 new champions crowned in the UFC last year and that’s not including the crowning of two interim titleholders. We have seen titles tossed around like hot potatoes and fighters that we never expected to reach the pinnacle with belts around their waists.

It’s certainly an interesting time in the sport of mixed martial arts and 2017 could potentially bring more of the same as the sport continues to evolve and the competition continues to elevate.

With that being said, take a look at who we predicted to be wearing each UFC title by the end of the year below:

Joanna Champ

Women’s Strawweight: Joanna Jedrzejczyk

Reigning UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk has formed a tight grip on the 115-pound division and in the process she has become one of the promotion’s most dominant champions. The Polish striker has defended her title four consecutive times over the likes of Jessica Penne, Valerie Letourneau, Claudia Gadelha and Karolina Kowalkiewicz, which is second most only behind longtime flyweight king Demetrious Johnson.

While Jedrzejczyk did face some adversity in her most recent fight against Kowalkiewicz at Nov. 12, 2016’s UFC 205, she has been relatively dominant throughout her title reign and she has appeared to improve each and every time out. She doesn’t have her next fight scheduled as of now, but I expect her to continue to improve on her dangerous skill set and end off 2017 with the strap still around her waist.
