Thiago Santos and Eryk Anders went to all-out war in the main event of last night’s (Sat., September 22, 2018) UFC Fight Night 137 at Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil.

There’s just no other way to put it.

The original headliner for the event was supposed to be Jimi Manuwa vs. Glover Teixeira. Teixeira withdrew due to injury and usual middleweight Santos replaced him. Manuwa then withdrew and Anders – also a middleweight – replaced him at light heavyweight. But although the fighters were ‘replacements,’ they fought like champions in Sao Paulo.

The hometown competitor came out winging his trademark powerful offense. He landed straight punches, knees, and massive kicks to the body. But Anders attempted to neutralize “Marreta” with a relentless onslaught of takedown attempts. Some were successful but he was unable to ground the Brazilian striker for too long. That is until he took Santos’ back and threatened with a rear-naked choke.

The Brazilian survived and even reversed position. He found his kicking range again, but the action was halted by an eye poke. When Anders sought another takedown after a brief break, Santos began unloading a nonstop torrent of short elbows and punches that left Anders battered as the bell sounded on the third round. He fell to the mat three times in a concerning scene, awarding Santos the win in an absolutely awesome fight that won “Fight of the Night” as it deserved to.

This evening’s (Sat., September 22, 2018) UFC Fight Night 137 is in the books from the Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil. Now it’s time to watch the aftermath in the post-fight press conference.

In the main event, middleweights Thiago Santos and Eryk Anders squared off at light heavyweight. Jimi Manuwa and Glover Teixeira both previously dropped out of the fight due to injury. The two replacement fighters put on a rousing three-round fight with Santos taking home a vicious referee stoppage.

In the co-headliner, Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira secured a brutally fast stoppage over Carlo Pedersoli. Neil Magny was his original opponent. Oliveira took out his anger quickly on his late replacement, flooring him with a huge punch in the first round and finishing the fight quick.

Overall, the event was a bit short on big-name value. However, it more than made up for that with the retirements of two longtime veterans. It was also an event to remember due to its wide variety of impressive finishes by several fighters. Santos was the obvious one, but there were many other worthy finishes.

There’s a good amount to unpack from Sao Paulo, so join us for the post-fight press conference streaming live after the main card here:

The main event of the Brazil-based card has seen a never-ending streak of changes starting with Glover Teixeira and ending with Jimi Manuwa’s withdrawal. Usual middleweights Thiago Santos and Eryk Anders will meet in the replacement main event.

Both Santos and Anders made weight for the 205-pound bout at today’s early weigh-ins. Former bantamweight champion Renan Barao did not, however, but that’s a different story.

Regardless, fight-crazed MMA fans in Brazil should have an explosive main event to cheer for tomorrow night. To get ready for the bout, check out Santos and Anders’ staredowns from the ceremonial weigh-ins here:

This weekend’s (September 22, 2018) UFC Fight Night 137 (UFC Sao Paulo) at Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil, has simply been a mess from the opening bell.

The main event was originally a light heavyweight match-up between Glover Teixeira and Jimi Manuwa. Teixeira was forced and Brazilian middleweight Thiago Santos stepped in to fight in his home country. Manuwa then withdrew from the fight himself due to injury.

Manuwa issued a statement on his withdrawal earlier today.

Middleweight Eryk Anders replaced him to meet Santos at light heavyweight. It was a dizzying series of events that lost Teixeira, Manuwa, Neil Magny, Tonya Evinger, and Ketlen Vieira due to injury.

The news is a concerning series of events for the UFC and fans. So much so that the promotion has offered refunds for anyone who purchased a ticket due to never-ending switch-ups. The refunds will be available until September 21.

UFC Sao Paulo promises to bring next to no mainstream value because of not only the injuries but the overall lack of star power even before them. The UFC’s Fight Nights on FOX Sports 1 have been struggling mightily all through this year. Let’s hope their new TV deal with ESPN changes that in 2019.

Jimi Manuwa Issues Statement On UFC Sao Paulo Withdrawal

Jimi Manuwa has released a statement on being out of this headliner.

Jimi Manuwa issues statement on making the decision to pull out of his fight at the upcoming UFC Sao Paulo event. It was revealed on Monday that Manuwa was forced to withdraw from his scheduled fight against Thiago Santos in a light heavyweight bout.

As a result, the UFC needed to find a short-notice replacement to serve as the opponent for Santos and to save this main event. Thus, they got Eryk Anders.

Manuwa is coming off of back-to-back losses to Jan Blachowicz and Volkan Oezdemir. Prior to those losses, he was on a two-fight win streak where he knocked out both of those opponents.

Manuwa Issues Statement

Manuwa took to his official Instagram account to issue the following statement on pulling out of this fight:

“I’m truly gutted,” Manuwa wrote. “The day after I landed in Brazil I went for my last hard training session. During that session of sprints I tore my hamstring. After getting it assessed in hospital, doctors diagnosed it as a severe tear greater than 50 percent. They told me it will be a minimum of six weeks recovery time.”

“I want to thank everyone of you for the love and support you have sent my way,” Manuwa wrote. “Without all of you none of this is possible. I can’t wait to come back and put on a show for you all. Lions eat first.”

I'm truly gutted. The day after I landed in Brazil I went for my last hard training session. During that session of sprints I tore my hamstring, and after getting it assessed in hospital, doctors diagnosed it as a severe tear greater than 50%. They told me it will be a minimum of 6 weeks recovery time. Ill be working hard everyday to get back so I can continue to put on great fights for everyone to watch. I was 100% ready and looking forward to putting on a great show for the fans in São Paulo and around the world . I made a lot of sacrifices and even missed my daughter's 10th birthday. I'm sorry Havana, I love you, Daddy is on his way home. I want to thank everyone of you for the love and support you have sent my way. Without all of you none of this is possible. I can't wait to come back and put on a show for you all. Lions eat first ?
