UFC President Dana White told MMA Fighting on Friday that Jake Shields has yet to officially sign with the UFC, but that doesn’t mean plans for Shields’ debut with the company aren’t moving forward.

So confident is the company that Shields will soon be in the fold that his first opponent has apparently been selected. Two sources close to the situation have told MMA Fighting that Shields will likely make his first foray into the octagon against welterweight contender Martin Kampmann.

Barring any unforeseen setbacks, Shields’ signing is expected to be finalized in the next several days as the UFC moves to populate upcoming events.

UFC champions Georges St-Pierre and Frankie Edgar came up short at the ESPYs on Wednesday night.

The annual awards ceremony held by the ESPN cable network, now in its 18th year, took place at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles and aired live on ESPN. The broadcast was hosted by “Saturday Night Live” performer and writer Seth Meyers. And once again, the awards show coincided with the day after the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, one of the few “dead days” of the year in major sports.

St-Pierre, the UFC’s welterweight champion, was nominated for Best Fighter. Edgar was up for Best Upset for his lightweight title win over BJ Penn at UFC 112 in April.

October 2002, Montreal. With first-round stoppages against Ivan Menjivar and Justin Bruckmann under his belt, Georges St. Pierre (2-0) was already the welterweight champion of the Canada-based Universal Combat Challenge when he stepped into the ring against Edmonton native Travis Galbraith, who was a slightly-more-seasoned 5-1 at the time. It took St. Pierre all of four seconds to score the double-leg takedown — Rush was already a natural at age 21 — and aside from an armlock attempt, Galbraith didn’t have much to offer on the ground.

The real reason to check out this fight if you’ve never seen it before is the unique finish, which starts around 3:23. With Galbriath’s arms locked around GSP’s arm and neck, St. Pierre pulls up and drives Galbriath’s head against the mat a couple times. After throwing in a couple of conventional strikes, GSP goes back to the brutal short-slams until his opponent is dazed and the ref stops the fight. After two more wins in Canada, St. Pierre earned his ticket to the UFC. And hopefully we’ll see this finishing move again someday…

Phase one of Dan Hardy‘s three-step plan to get back to a UFC welterweight title shot will begin in London at UFC 120, when he battles Carlos Condit.

Though the fight is not yet officially announced, it’s been confirmed by several sources, and Hardy himself spoke about the possibility of facing Condit during a recent appearance at UFC 116 in Las Vegas.

“I can’t say the name on the contract, but the speculation is Condit,” Hardy said with a smile. “He’s a real exciting fighter. He comes to brawl and that’s what I’m all about.”
