Gegard Mousasi, Austin Vanderford

It didn’t take long for Bellator middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi to impose his will and finish top contender Austin Vanderford at Bellator 275.

The fight began with a flurry of wild exchanges between the two middleweights on the feet. Mousasi was able to showcase solid boxing movements to elude Vanderford’s strikes.

Mousasi was able to land a big right hand in the middle of a Vanderford takedown attempt to drop Vanderford to the mat. After quickly moving into top position off a sprawl, Mousasi landed a series of heavy elbows and right hands to finish the fight via TKO.

This was Mousasi’s second straight successful title defense since earning the middleweight title over Douglas Lima in 2020. He has since earned dominant wins over John Salter and now Vanderford since earning the middleweight throne.

A loss to Rafael Lovato Jr. at Bellator 223 ended up being a turning point in Mousasi’s career. He would lose the belt before going on his current four-fight winning streak and cementing himself as the best middleweight in Bellator.

Before signing with Bellator in 2017, Mousasi enjoyed a dominant run in the UFC that put him on the cusp of a middleweight title shot. But, a win over former UFC champion Chris Weidman at UFC 210 wouldn’t be enough to earn him the next shot.

As for Vanderford, his loss to Mousasi was the first of his professional career. He most recently earned one-sided wins over the likes of Fabian Edwards and Vinicius de Jesus en route to the title shot.

Mousasi continues to prove that he’s arguably one of the most underrated fighters in the world and it could take a big test to take away his Bellator middleweight title.

Check out the highlights from Mousasi’s win over Vanderford at Bellator 275.

Gegard Mousasi could be the next MMA fighter to move to boxing.

Gegard Mousasi has had a long and successful MMA career. From the UFC to now in Bellator, Mousasi isn’t closing the door on new opportunities. He is getting ready for his Bellator middleweight title defense against Austin Vanderford. That fight will go down at Bellator 275 this Friday night.

During a Q and A with the media prior to the event, Mousasi explained how he would like to try out boxing. He also has a very big name in mind if he does.

“We were aiming for Anderson Silva because of Showtime and boxing and he was boxing,” Mousasi told the media via MMA Junkie. “I wanted to do something different, but I don’t know. I want to do it, but it is up to them. Boxing because MMA [he] is a bit too old. Boxing he is doing well, he beat a former champ I think. And I think it is something different. Or they give me another fighter, a boxing fighter, but I think Anderson is a bigger name.”

Silva was a longtime UFC champion. He is known in some circles as the greatest fighter of all time. With a reputation like that, he is bound to be the target for many other fighters, no matter the sport.

After his UFC career came to a close, Silva decided to make his way to the squared circle. He has had four professional boxing fights so far, winning three of them, including most recently going 2-0 in 2021, with an upset win over Julio César Chávez Jr. and defeating fellow UFC legend Tito Ortiz. Silva is showing that he still has the skill and drive to continue fighting, even if it is in another manner.

Although both Silva and Mousasi spent the majority of their careers in the UFC at the same time, in the same division, they never fought each other. They do have some former opponents in common, so it would be interesting to see who would get the win between them.

Taking the opportunity to fight in the boxing ring seems fashionable at this point. Lately, a few former MMA fighters have been taking their talents to the ring in order to continue their careers and make some money. Silva is still a draw and having him face any other MMA fighter would be entertaining, especially if it is the current Bellator middleweight champion.

Middleweight Champion Gegard Mousasi (48-7-2 MMA) is set to defend his belt against an undefeated Austin Vanderford (11-0 MMA) tomorrow night at Bellator 275 in Dublin, Ireland.

During the build-up to ‘The Dreamcatcher’s’ second title defence, despite the frequently similar ask about his upcoming bout, Mousasi was asked on YouTube with Karyn Bryant about his thoughts about the latest Netflix hit, ‘The Tinder Swindler’.

“He scams a lot of women… but girls do that to guys all the time.” Gegard Mousasi stated, “They don’t go and make a documentary about that but when a guy does that it’s all over and they give him a whole documentary.”

“How many gold-diggers marry older men, like he was 60 and they’re 30 years, and then they divorce and get all the money of the guy, that’s also a sham!”

The Netflix series debuted on the 2nd of February and now has spent three straight weeks in the company’s global top 10 of most-watched movies, it seems to be no surprise as to why the show has caught the attention of Mousasi.

Does Gegard Mousasi believe he can successfully defend his belt at Bellator 272

As Mousasi looks to do something he has never done before and defend his belt two consecutive times in a row. However, the wily veteran seems to be the calm before the storm and is even looking at defending his belt even a few more times within the year.

“I fought 2 times last 2 years,” Mousasi said. “It looks like I’m gonna fight soon again and then the end of the year maybe. So, three to five times maybe this year.”

“I haven’t missed a beat, I’m still fast. I’m still strong, I feel better than ever.”

With Mousasi’s upcoming bout bringing his pro total to 58 fights, he looks to show he is still at the top of his game and extend his Bellator run to 8-1.
