The UFC offered ‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley a fight against Frankie Edgar at UFC 268 in New York on November 6th.

O’Malley is one of the UFC’s most electrifying young prospects in the game, but he turned down the fight against ‘The Answer’. The self-proclaimed undefeated fighter didn’t turn the fight down because fighting Edgar didn’t interest him. O’Malley turned it down because did not want to fight in New York City due to the amount of money he would lose to taxes.

“I had a conversation with Sean Shelby a couple days after in person, in Houston at the fights. We’re good now. He didn’t like what I said. I didn’t like what he said. I feel like I’m in a position where if you want me to fight in New York, and I don’t want to fight in New York, I’m not gonna fight in New York. I’m in that position, and I had that conversation, and we’re good now. But yeah, I got offered a fight in New York against Frankie, and I said if Frankie wants to get whooped, he can get whooped in Vegas in December, a month later. They want Frankie to fight in New York, so they gave him ‘Chito’ (Vera). Getting the ‘Suga Show’ against Frankie would’ve been a great fight for me, but I’m not too worried about it.” (H/T MMAJunkie)

It seems as if getting a ranked opponent for ‘Suga’ is the next step up in his career, as it should be. In his last fight, he landed an unheard of “230 total strikes and 177 to the head” against Kris Mouthino (stats via UFC Stats). Moutinho was a fill-in fighter in his first UFC bout. O’Malley insists he is open to fighting Dominick Cruz, anyone inside the top 15, or any person off the street.

O’Malley wants to fight sometime in December after rectifying his relationship with Sean Shelby. The ‘Suga Show’ looks to continue this later this year in Las Vegas.

Do you think Sean O’Malley should have taken the Frankie Edgar fight? Are you excited for the ‘Suga Show’ to resume?

A fun bantamweight fight between Frankie Edgar and Sean O’Malley is being targeted for UFC 268 according to a report from Ariel Helwani.

The veteran MMA journalist broke the news of the potential match-up on his substack.

“UFC wants to book Sean O’Malley versus Frankie Edgar next,” Helwani wrote. “Maybe even for the MSG show on Nov. 6. TBD on if it will happen.”

While this seems like the perfect match-up for both men, O’Malley is already on record as saying he’s not interested in competing at UFC 268 in New York. ‘Suga’ spoke in detail about his bust-up with UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby after he turned down the chance to fight on the November 6 pay-per-view event.

During an episode of The BrO’Malley Show, ‘Suga’ explained his reasons for refusing to fight at UFC 268.

“I don’t even know if I’m supposed to say this…Sean Shelby was mad at me,” O’Malley said. “Dude, I don’t wanna fight in New York. It’s far, the taxes are ridiculous, and Tim (Welch) has no-Gi or no, ADCC trials that weekend. And he told me that before I even potentially had a fight. So, that’s his thing, and I’m not gonna say, ‘No. I have a fight’. We’re doing it, especially when I could fight like a month later in Vegas.”

Apparently, those reasons didn’t fly with Shelby who responded in an angry fashion.

“Sean Shelby was just like, mad and like, ‘Fine. Go hang out with 6ix9ine’. Like, just acting like a f**king tool, dude,” O’Malley said. “So, I don’t know if I should’ve said that or not. But it’s like, dude, come on. What do you do?”

Perhaps, Shelby’s tactics will work and we’ll see O’Malley compete at UFC 268. Alternatively, we could see O’Malley vs. Edgar at a later date. Either way, this definitely seems the be the fight that is next for both men.

Frankie Edgar is looking to stay in the bantamweight division, and he has an idea who he would like to face next.

The former UFC lightweight champion moved to his new division last August, after spending the previous four years as a featherweight. He’s had mixed results since then, picking up a win over longtime contender Pedro Munhoz in his debut, only to lose to Cory Sandhagen in his next bout by highlight reel knockout in February.

In an interview with MMA Island, Edgar said that he’s looking to get things back on track by the end of the year, and he believes a matchup against Sean O’Malley would do just that (H/T MMA Mania).

“I know a lot of people are tied up right now,” Edgar said. “O’Malley just fought, won, pretty dominant fight. He can definitely be a matchup I see happening, maybe before this year ends. A lot of people have fights coming up so if he’s free, I’m free, makes sense to me.”

‘Sugar’ O’Malley is coming of a three-round destruction of late notice replacement Kris Moutinho. He was originally scheduled to face Louis Smolka, who was forced to withdraw due to injury. A number of notable fighters in the division offered to step in to take the fight, but the UFC opted to go with Moutinho, disappointing them and the fans. Many feel that O’Malley has been given favorable matchups, and the pairing didn’t do anything to quell those beliefs.

In Edgar, O’Malley would face easily the biggest name and toughest opposition he has in his career. Though ‘The Answer’ is only 2-4 in his last 6 over multiple divisions, he’s exclusively faced some of the best fights on the planet for over a decade. He’s appeared in 9 UFC title fights, and at just under 8 hours, he hold the record for most time in the UFC octagon. Edgar is also currently ranked #7 in the official UFC standings.

A fight between the two would be a classic veteran vs prospect bout that would headline any Fight Night or be featured highly on a pay-per-view. We know that Edgar is willing to put the fight together. Now it’s just a matter of seeing if it interests O’Malley or the UFC.
