UFC President Dana White isn’t sure what’s next for Frankie Edgar following his disappointing loss to Marlon Vera at UFC 268.

Edgar and Vera were trading blows for a majority of the fight before Vera landed a brutal front kick to the face that dropped Edgar in the third round. After landing some hard ground-and-pound, the referee stopped the fight, to the displeasure of Edgar.

Edgar had success in the opening minutes of the bout, using his wrestling to control Vera on the ground and also landing some hard elbows from top mount. However, Vera found his range as the fight went on and ended up getting the late finish.

Edgar immediately protested the stoppage, but White feels it was warranted.

“I love Frankie Edgar. He’s wrong,” White said during the UFC 268 post-fight presser. “It was a great stoppage. Even when Frankie was on his knees and was arguing with the ref and everything else, when he still stood up, he wasn’t right after. So it was a good stoppage.”

With the loss to Vera, Edgar has now lost four of his last five inside the UFC Octagon. He has accumulated just one win since making the move from featherweight to bantamweight last year.

Despite his recent struggles, White isn’t ruling out a possible return for Edgar in the near future but feels his days may be numbered.

“Frankie was fighting a good fight until he got clipped,” White said. I don’t know. Frankie’s gotta go home, spend some time with his family, think about what he wants to do, and we’ll talk about it.”

Edgar is a former lightweight champion and is widely regarded as a legend of the sport and a future Hall of Famer.

Marlon Vera has had enough of the dismissive comments of Sean O’Malley.

One of the biggest wins to come in the career of “Chito” Vera was also his most controversial. When taking on “Suga'” Sean O’Malley at UFC 252, last August, he got a TKO after a leg kick numbed the nerves in O’Malley’s ankle, leading to him falling to the ground and succumbing to ground and pound from the Ecudorian.

Ever since that fight, which was the first loss of O’Malley’s career, he denied that Vera had ever beaten him, regularly throwing shade his way and constantly saying that he is still undefeated. It would seem that “Chito” has had enough though, as when asked about it during the UFC 268 media scrum, he had some quite aggressive language about O’Malley, saying that he does not care what “Suga'” has to say.

“I said it many times before, we are in the times where everything is (about) clout. Everything is like… who you hang out with. I don’t give a shit what he says, I knocked him out. You can say whatever you want, you can make fun of it, but at the end of the day he’s going to bed every night knowing I put him out,” Vera said.

“We can talk crazy shit. I can use my social media and just say crazy shit, and I know people will like that, but I keep it real. I like to be real, I like to say facts, and I earned everything I have in my life by going forward and going hard. So he can go fuck himself.”

While an eventual rematch between the two is far from out of the question, they are on different paths in their careers at the moment. Marlon Vera is set to take on number eight ranked Frankie Edgar, as he continues to try chipping away at the bantamweight ranks, while Sean O’Malley does not seem particularly interested in facing ranked fighters at the current rate of pay that he is making.

Edgar: I’ve Put Too Much In To Walk Away From MMA

Former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar doesn’t envision retiring anytime soon, and believes even when he does hang up his gloves, he’ll remain involved in MMA.

Edgar is one of the sport’s all-time greats. After an unbeaten six-fight start to his career, “The Answer” was signed by the UFC in 2007. Eight fights later, Edgar was 7-1 on MMA’s biggest stage and had defeated BJ Penn to become the 155-pound champ.

In the years that followed, the New Jersey native made the move down to featherweight, defeated the likes of current lightweight king Charles Oliveira, Urijah Faber, Chad Mendes, Jeremy Stephens, and Yair Rodriguez. Having failed to capture the 145-pound gold in three attempts, Edgar went down another weight class to bantamweight.

In his 135-pound debut, Edgar defeated perennial contender Pedro Munhoz, who boasts a victory over former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt. After jumping straight into the division’s top 10, the veteran was matched up with top-ranked star Cory Sandhagen. He was knocked out by “The Sandman” in brutal fashion by a first-round flying knee.

Now eight months later, the 40-year-old will be looking to return to the win column with an impressive performance against the durable Marlon “Chito” Vera. The pair will collide on a stacked UFC 268 main card inside Madison Square Garden this Saturday.

Edgar Doesn’t See A Career Away From MMA

Given the frightening end to his most recent Octagon outing, as well as his age, many have wondered whether the 40-year-old will consider retiring from active competition sooner rather than later. During a recent appearance on the Real Quick with Mike Swick podcast, Edgar suggested he has more than a few trips to the cage left in him.

“I don’t know what 40’s supposed to feel like, but I feel good. I still get after it in the gym. My workload’s pretty much the same… I’ll never put an end date on anything, man. I don’t know if I’ll ever even retire… officially at least. I’m just going out there and having fun. I still enjoy doing what I do. If my body allows it, I’ll do this for a long time, man.”

Discussing what his future will look like when he does choose to end his active career, Edgar suggested he’s put too much into MMA to leave it behind for a new venture. Whether through coaching or management, “The Answer” knows he’ll be staying involved in the sport.

“I’m gonna stay involved in this game in some way, shape, or form. Whether I open up my own gym, whether I help manage guys, you know, maybe help Ali [Abdelaziz] in that department as well. But you know, I feel like I’ve put so much into it that I can’t walk away from this sport. It’s still my passion. Already I feel like I help the younger guys on my team so, I feel like I have a good niche with that and I feel like I could be useful for some guys that are trying to further their careers.”

Sean O’Malley has revealed who he’d face next if it was up to him.

O’Malley has been making a name for himself in the UFC. Despite not being in the top 15 bantamweight rankings, the “Sugar” show has been calling for some big names. In fact, he’s got two former world champions in mind.

During an appearance of MMAFighting’s The MMA Hour, O’Malley said that Frankie Edgar and Dominick Cruz are on his radar.

“If they offered me Frankie, I would love to fight Frankie. Frankie’s a top-10 guy, and he’s a big-name guy. I wouldn’t have said no. No, I don’t want to fight him because I want to get paid more to fight. I said, ‘Yeah, I’ll fight Frankie on December 11 in Vegas. I would have loved that fight. That’s the fight I was hoping for. That’s the match I wanted. I’ll also fight Dominick Cruz December 11. That’s a fight I would take.”

O’Malley isn’t likely to get the Edgar fight this year. That’s because “The Answer” is penciled in to fight Marlon Vera at UFC 268 on Nov. 6. Sean O’Malley gave his prediction for the fight on his podcast.

“I think Chito beats Edgar. I think it’s probably going to be boring as s**t,” Claimed O’Malley. “I think Frankie, he just kinda like goes back and forth. Chito doesn’t do much. I’m gonna watch. I’m gonna watch and observe. But yeah, it’ll probably be a boring fight. I think Chito wins. I think Chito beats him.”

O’Malley suffered the first loss of his pro MMA career to “Chito” Vera back in Aug. 2020. Since that fight, O’Malley and Vera have been trading barbs. “Sugar” has said he doesn’t consider the loss to be legit.

Cruz doesn’t have a fight booked and was last seen back in March. He earned a split-decision win over Casey Kenney.
