Referee Dan Miragliotta has spoken out for the first time since his controversial stoppage of the Frank Mir vs. Kubrat Pulev bout at Triller Triad Combat this past weekend in Texas.

Mir was making his second career boxing appearance after losing to Steve Cunningham on the Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren card earlier this year. He earned a main event spot on the Triller Triad Combat card against Pulev, but it didn’t go his way.

Just seconds into the fight, Pulev caught Mir with a big right hand that had him wobbled against the ropes. Somehow, Mir was able to stay on his feet, but he was completely off balance and wobbly.

After remaining stagnant in the corner, Mir failed to put his hands back up and Miragliotta put a stop to the fight, prompting an odd stoppage from Miragliotta.

Frank Mir’s Fighting Future Is Uncertain

“I was waiting for Pulev to come in,” Miragliotta said in an interview with MMA Fighting. “That would have made it so much easier for me because as soon as he would have made one step as if he was attacked, I was in a position with my left shoulder and the left side of my body to bump him, push him out, and stop the fight. But he didn’t engage – he backed off, and that’s why I kept watching Mir.”

“Then Mir didn’t go down and didn’t put his hands back up – as soon as Pulev made that slight step, I stepped in and stopped the fight. It was easy,” Miragliotta explained.

It’s unclear what could be next for the 42-year-old Mir, whether that be in the boxing ring or in MMA. He’s still looking for his first win in boxing after dropping two straight.

Pulev was able to pick apart Mir while keeping his distance and landed a few power shots that had Mir wobbling on his feet. Referee Dan Miragliotta stepped in to call off the fight with Mir still on his feet in the corner.

Tonight from Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, Triller played host to Triad Combat: Mir vs. Pulev live on pay-per-view.

Triller brought to life their new concept for combat sports that they view as a hybrid between boxing and MMA. Under the Triad Combat rules, fighters compete in a triangular ring in two-minute rounds. The boxing/MMA hybrid comes into play with fighters having leeway for clinching and striking in the clinch.

In tonight’s main event, MMA legend Frank Mir took on Kubrat Pulev. Pulev entered the fight as a 28-2 boxer with 14 knockouts. In the co-main event, MMA vet Matt Mitrione fought Alexander Flores in another heavyweight bout. The 31-year-old Flores came in with an 18-3-1 professional boxing record, and this was Mitrione’s first time competing in a boxing/non-MMA contest.

Finally, the colorful Mike Perry also competed on tonight’s card. Perry recently exited the UFC and signed with Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship. Under BKFC contracts, fighters are free to pursue other ventures, and that is what Perry did tonight in his fight against Michael Seals, a 39-year-old boxer who entered with a 25-3 record.

Frank Mir, a former UFC heavyweight champion, says his fight on Saturday at Triller Triad Combat against Kubrat Pulev will be the highest payday of his career.

Mir has been a part of massive fights and events like headlining UFC 100 against Brock Lesnar. He also headlined Bellator shows, as well, but on Saturday, he says his payday is the highest of his career.

“Not [by a significant amount],” Mir said on The MMA Hour. “The second Brock fight was close, but that was the second biggest of my career. But no, this one … in fact, if I hit my bonuses and I win, I’m basically touching on seven figures. And I’ve never been within a couple hundred grand of that in the MMA world.”

“It’s a testament to what Triller is doing, pushing the paydays and sharing the income. I realize this is a couple of years ago and this is kind of bittersweet for me,” Mir said. “I looked at some of the pay-per-view buys that Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury sold. And what they took home for paydays. Brock and I sold more pay-per-views, and I didn’t take home nowhere near as much as either one of them. Brock and I combined didn’t take home ten percent of what they got.”

Frank Mir is set to headline the Triller card on Saturday. It’s a special rules fight as it is mainly boxing with some clinching. The former UFC heavyweight champ fought for Triller on the Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren card where he fought former IBF cruiserweight champ, Steve Cunningham where he lost by decision but did much better than many thought. Prior to that, he beat Roy Nelson by decision at Bellator 231 which snapped his four-fight losing skid.

Frank Mir has shocked many by claiming he is in line for a career-high payday when he takes on Kubrat Pulev in the main event of Triller’s Triad Combat show this Saturday night.

During a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, Mir revealed that despite being involved in some of the biggest events in UFC history he has never netted a million-dollar paycheque.

“The second Brock [Lesnar] fight [at UFC 100] was close, but that was the second-biggest of my career. But no, this one [is the biggest],” Mir revealed. “In fact, if I hit my bonuses and I win, I’m basically touching on seven figures, and I’ve never been within a couple $100,000 of that in the MMA world.”

After seeing the money Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder recently made for their trilogy fight, Mir is kind of miffed that he and Lesnar didn’t come anywhere near to those figure despite outselling the heavyweight boxing duo,

“I think that’s a testament to what Triller is doing, pushing the paydays and sharing the income,” Mir said. “I mean, here, I realized this a couple years ago, this is kind of bittersweet for me — I looked at the amount of pay-per-view buys that Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury sold, and what they took home for paydays. Me and Brock sold more pay-per-views, and I didn’t take nowhere near as much as either one of them. I think Brock and I, combined, didn’t take 10 percent of what they did.”

Frank Mir Explains How He’ll Beat Kubrat Pulev This Weekend  

“I just make it everything but a boxing match,” Mir said. “It’s too close to the fight to really worry about letting the cat out of the bag, but yeah, behind every punch, he’s not going to be able to throw combos. Every punch, I’m grabbing him afterwards, and then I’m going to work the clinch and just drag on him and really push his grappling cardio, which he doesn’t have to the experience that I do. It’s different. You can ask anybody’s who’s fought MMA — the first time you wrestled with somebody, stood up, and then you had to throw punches again? It’s a different feeling, and it takes a lot of acclamation.

“I have 20 years of doing it, and my endurance and my understanding of how it works, being relaxed and able to still fire off. So obviously boxing at range, even if I thought I was better than him at that, why would I? That’s what he’s best at, where he’s most comfortable, where his heart rate is going to be low. I’m going to jump on him and rag-doll the hell out of him.”
