A few months ago, it appeared that the two of the fastest rising contenders in the UFC heavyweight division were going to fight each other. The fighters and the fans wanted it. Those two fighters are Derrick Lewis and Francis Ngannou. It still remains when and where the fight could take place. If it were up to Lewis, who has been on a roll as of late, he would fight the up and coming prospect after he fights former UFC heavyweight title contender Mark Hunt at UFC Fight Night 110 on June 11, 2017, at the Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand.

As to why Lewis wants this fight so badly, it’s simple. He is tired of hearing Ngannou talking trash about him. Lewis recently spoke with Ariel Helwani of The MMA Hour, and during the interview, he declared that he would like to silence the “overhyped” heavyweight once and for all.

“Francis, that guy is real ignorant, don’t even worry about that guy. I would love to fight him after this fight because he’s been talking a lot of shit anyway, like he’s the shit. Fuck that guy. I will fight his ass after I fight Mark Hunt. I wanted to fight him before this fight. He’s over there talking about I’m too slow and this and that. I’m going to bang his ass out. He is overhyped. I’m still prettier than him anyway. Forget that African booty scratcher, ain’t worried about him.”

Lewis is currently on a six fight winning streak inside the world famous Octagon. He is not just dominating folks for three rounds, he is finishing them and in a devastating way. Five of those six wins come by the way of knockout. On the flip side, Ngannou is on a five fight winning streak under the UFC banner. All of them coming by knockout.

Before the UFC books these two hard hitting fighters against each other, Lewis is preparing for one of his toughest challenges to date against Hunt. Should Lewis beat Hunt at the upcoming event, don’t be surprised to see the UFC book Lewis and Ngannou against each other shortly after that.

Although he hasn’t necessarily transcended the mixed martial arts world like some other titleholders have, heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic’s recent run of success is something to take note of.

The 34-year-old Ohio native has scored five straight T/KO victories over some of the very best heavyweights of all-time including Mark Hunt, Andrei Arlovski, Fabricio Werdum, Alistair Overeem and Junior Dos Santos. His last loss came in a back-and-forth slug fest with Dos Santos in 2014, but he has seemed to improve each time out since, which was shown in his rematch with “Cigano” this past weekend (May 13, 2017) at UFC 211, as Miocic dispatched the Brazilian in just over two minutes with a brutal right hand.

Clearly, Miocic is something special, but not every heavyweight feels that way. In fact, No. 5-ranked rising contender Francis Ngannou said earlier today (May 15, 2017) on The MMA Hour that he was ‘not impressed’ by Miocic:

“That was a good performance, but I’m not impressed,” Ngannou told Ariel Helwani. “I’m not impressed with him. [I’m more impressed] by Velasquez. I think Velasquez is the best heavyweight that we have. That’s why I want to fight him too.”

“I’m ranked number five right now,” he continued. “I’ll probably fight everyone right now. I already called out [Cain] Velasquez. He said he’s injured, but I’d like to fight him and just get the title shot.”

Velasquez, a former champion, is the only heavyweight ranked in the top four that Miocic has not yet fought, which is why many want to see the two face off, although Velasquez was scheduled to compete against Werdum this past December, but he was forced to withdraw with a back injury. A timetable for his return has not yet been announced.

While Ngannou, a French knockout artist possessing a 5-0 UFC record, expressed interest in a bout with Velasquez, he admitted that he would obviously accept a fight with Miocic if it were offered to him:

“Yes, that’s true.” he said when asked if he believed he was ready for Miocic. “That is one of my reasons for moving to Vegas. Right now, I’m ready for all challenges.”

“If they give me the opportunity, I will take it.”

Ngannou is coming off of an impressive first round knockout victory over former champion Andrei Arlovski this past January and “The Predator” seems focused on proving his doubters wrong:

“You will always have that kind of people,” he said of his skeptics. “[They say] ‘you’re not ready, you need to improve yourself, you need to learn more, Stipe is too tough,’ but until the fight [happens], no one will no for sure. I would like to get the fight.”

Would you give the 30-year-old contender a chance against Miocic?

It’s Time to Slow Down the Francis Ngannou Heavyweight Hype

No one in their right mind would ever drink out of a puddle.

Until you find yourself dying of thirst in the desert. Then, suddenly, puddle water is delicious. It’s refreshing and earthy and not at all repugnant. It’s like liquid manna from the gods!

Today’s UFC heavyweight division—any heavyweight division, really—is that desert. Champion Stipe Miocic is talented and charismatic but has yet, at age 34, to transcend the MMA bubble. Fabricio Werdum, the man Miocic beat for the title, is 39. Cain Velasquez can’t stay healthy. Alistair Overeem is aging and one-dimensional. Roy Nelson, 40, is now a shell of a self that, even in the best of times, didn’t have the deepest bag of tricks.

Don’t even bother looking at the lower reaches of the division. Among the immortal names populating the official UFC heavyweight rankings: Marcin Tybura, Aleksei Oleinik and Daniel Omielanczuk.

And yet, what is that that shimmers in the distance? A glistering mirage of glamor in a decidedly glamour-starved division that has historically been considered the sport’s glamour leader?

That mirage is Francis Ngannou.

The marble-cut Cameroonian-Frenchman entered the UFC with authority in 2015. In the five consecutive wins since, the 30-year-old Ngannou (10-1) has racked up gaudy stats: four knockouts, one submission, two performance bonuses and not even a soupcon of a third round.

With all that in mind, it was understandable—and entirely predictable—when the hardcore fan set lost its freaking mind Tuesday when Ngannou announced he was moving to Las Vegas to prepare for “the next level” of competition.

And I don’t say that likely. I mean, people really, truly freaked out.

They may have been egged on in part by none other than UFC President Dana White, who said about Ngannou in January that “I believe that this guy has the potential to become the heavyweight champion of the world. I also believe he has the potential to hold that title for a very long time.”

But it’s time to take this impulse off the overdrive setting. Ngannou is a promising prospect, but it’s premature to expect him to rampage to the title and, in so doing, sweep us all out of this confounding heavyweight wasteland. It’s time to pump the brakes on all this Ngannou hype.

There’s no question Ngannou has earned some of this attention. A physical marvel at 6’4″ and about 256 pounds, he has a great combination of power and quickness. But there’s more to his game than what a glance at his resume might suggest; he brings nifty footwork and an impressive command of range and angles to bear alongside show-stopping knockout ability. His clinch and submission games are coming along, too.

Even so, Ngannou has only competed 11 times professionally. The son of a street fighter, Ngannou lived homeless on the streets of Paris for a time while he pursued a boxing career before eventually gravitating to MMA. This is a fascinating and inspirational story. It’s also not a deep athletic background.

Ngannou cut his teeth fighting nobodies in Europe, and it hasn’t been much better in the UFC. He had his hands full last April with Curtis Blaydes, a journeyman filling in on short notice. His biggest “name” opponent to date was Andrei Arlovski, a then-37-year-old with a badly flagging chin whom Ngannou flattened in 92 seconds. Another UFC opponent was Bojan Mihajlovic, whoever that is.

Yes, Ngannou gets better every fight. With his training-camp move, there’s no reason to expect that to change. In the meantime, though, there aren’t a lot of pieces in his game. He has no wrestling game to speak of, and his takedown defense is not impregnable. It’s a good thing for Ngannou (and all of us, frankly) that Jared Rosholt’s no longer on the UFC roster.

In that vein, there is reason to believe UFC matchmakers may shield Ngannou from opponents who could stop his hype train. The division’s lack of depth—in particular the extended absence of Velasquez, whose ground-and-pound game is a custom-made Ngannou antidote—certainly plays in Ngannou’s favor here.

With all these factors in mind, Ngannou will continue to climb the ladder. He will continue to win. He’s a compelling character worthy of fan devotion. But he’ll need more experience and success before anyone can truly confirm that he’s more than a trick of circumstances.

Francis Ngannou has found himself a new home.

The UFC’s heavyweight prospect, and expected title contention hopeful, has been tearing it up with his current UFC run as of late. The Frenchman is on a nine-fight win streak in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career, having finished each of those contests.

His UFC tenure has featured some brutal knockouts, a ridiculous kimura submission win over Anthony Hamilton, and a nasty KO win over former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski in the first round.

Now in order to put more effort into his championship push, Ngannou decided to make the jump and move from France to Las Vegas full time. He took to Twitter to confirm the news with a photo in front of the UFC’s new campus:

Ngannou is extremely talented. His mixture of freakish size, power, and and pure natural strength makes him a nasty match-up for even the best of heavyweights. The best example of that comes from his last Octagon appearance against former UFC champ Arlovski.

No bout for Ngannou has been announced as of this writing, but UFC President Dana White mentioned that they have plans for him to get back to work inside the Octagon this Summer.

With one more big win under his belt, it’s not too far fetched to believe that ‘The Predator’ is on the brink of championship contention. However, will his size and physical attributes be enough to get him through the elite such as Fabricio Werdum, Stipe Miocic, and Cain Velasquez?
