After being stopped in the fourth round of his main event bout with Mark Hunt at UFC Fight Night 110 earlier this month, No. 7-ranked heavyweight contender Derrick Lewis admitted that he was considering retirement.

After taking some time to think about it, however, “The Black Beast” told Ariel Helwani on today’s (June 26, 2017) edition of The MMA Hour that he was looking to get back into the Octagon in the near future, although he first needs to have a back injury evaluated:

“We’re just hoping that we don’t have to get surgery, because I thought about it a little bit, and it’s not going to be my last fight,” Lewis said. “I’m going to try to get back in there as soon as I can, and we’ll find out Wednesday, see what’s going on and if it’s not too serious. Hopefully I can get back in there before the end of the year.”

As far as the injury goes, it seemed to have seriously hindered Lewis’ performance against Hunt, as “The Black Beast” said that he ‘couldn’t move at all’ as the fight went on:

“That was the second time it ever happened in a fight. The first time, I still won in the third round. I knocked the guy out in the third round whenever that happened the first time. And it happened again in the Mark Hunt fight, and it was like, damn, I couldn’t move at all. The best thing I could do was just stand there and just take it, because it couldn’t move anymore.”

After the loss to Hunt, Lewis received some backlash from former opponent Travis Browne as well as rising heavyweight contender Francis Ngannou, which he says helped him make the decision to return to the Octagon:

“Whenever the booty-scratcher (Ngannou) started talking sh*t, and Travis Browne waking up from the dead, talking sh*t,” Lewis said.

“That guy (Ngannou) is not impressed with nobody, so it’s normal for him to say anything stupid. … Travis Browne don’t know what’s he thinking. Travis, he’s out there, man. That guy has been knocked out so many times, he’s been rocked so many times, he don’t know what to say. He’s just trying to stay relevant.”

“He better be worrying about [his fight at UFC 213] and not worried about me. It’s already done and over with between me and him.”

With that being said, a bout against Ngannou would be ideal for “The Black Beast”:

“If I can, I’d get him next,” Lewis said. “If not, that’s fine. I’ll give anyone hell, but right now that’d be a good one.”

Who would you like to see Lewis take on in his next bout?

Leading up to UFC Fight Night 110, it appeared that a fight between heavyweights Derrick Lewis and Francis Ngannou was in the cards for them as their next fight. However, that bout might be delayed as Lewis lost to Mark Hunt in the main event of UFC Fight Night 110 on Saturday night. Even though the fight may be delayed, the talk between the two hasn’t stopped.

Lewis was on a roll coming into the event, and Ngannou has been on fire as of late with a five fight winning streak. With the two heavyweights on the rise, many fans wanted to see them fight each other. In the past, Lewis stated he would be open to some “black-on-black” violence, and Ngannou dismissed a fight because Lewis is “too slow.”

The two fighters have had no hesitation to take shots at each other in the past, so it’s not really a surprise that Ngannou ripped Lewis when he lost to Hunt at UFC Fight Night 110. Ngannou sent out this tweet and also retweeted this post.

Keep in mind that the two fighters are still young in their careers so a matchup down the road could be still alive. The one hurdle in the fight not being made is the fact Lewis said he is “most likely” going to retire from the sport in his post-fight interview. We are in a waiting pattern with Lewis. Will he really retire or will he keep his fight for his career alive? Time will tell.

Francis Ngannou could be in for the biggest fight of his life this August.

The Frenchman has been dominating the UFC’s heavyweight division as of late, with his unblemished 5-0 record under the UFC banner still intact after his recent first round knockout win over former UFC heavyweight champ Andrei Arlovski. Currently, “The Predator” is on a nine fight win streak in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career, with all of those victories coming by way of finish.

UFC President Dana White himself claimed that Ngannou has all the makings to one day become UFC heavyweight champion, and hold the title longer than any other fighter before him. To do that, however, he’ll have to beat the cream of the crop in the heavyweight division – enter Junior dos Santos.

The former Brazilian UFC heavyweight champ comes off of a nasty first round knockout loss to current champ Stipe Miocic in the main event of UFC 211 from Dallas, Texas. His record as of late has been a spotty one, winning four of his last seven fights inside the Octagon.

Per a report from MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani on Twitter, the UFC is targeting a massive main event matchup between “JDS” and Ngannou at the yet-to-be announced pay-per-view (PPV) event in Seattle on August 19th:

The fight would certainly be the biggest of Ngannou’s career, giving him the opportunity to not only yet-again test himself against a former UFC heavyweight champ, but to go up against one of his fellow top five heavyweight counterparts. Aside from “Cigano”; only Alistair Overeem, Cain Velasquez, Fabricio Werdum, and Stipe Miocic, of course, sit above him.

Could the Frenchman be the fresh face that the heavyweight division needs? Do you think he has what it takes to be one of the longest reigning UFC heavyweight champs of all time? Let us know in the comments!
