The time for talking is officially over, as headliners Fedor Emelianenko and Fabricio Werdum met with the press Thursday afternoon in San Jose, Calif., to discuss their Strikeforce/M-1 Global main event on Saturday night.

Emelianenko explained why he thought Werdum is one of the “greatest” fighters in MMA, while Werdum discussed his game plan going into the fight of his life.

SAN JOSE — This weekend’s Strikeforce fighters took to the stage in front of a relatively small, but enthusiastic crowd at the HP Pavilion on Friday afternoon to make Saturday night’s match-ups official. While local favorites like Cung Le and Josh Thomson got a warm reception, it was still Fedor Emelianenko who commanded the loudest cheers, a fact that even brought a brief smile to his face.

SAN JOSE — This recurring feature sounded like such a good idea in my head. What’s not to like about an MMA fighter and an MMA writer matching wits over an upcoming fight card? That was before I went 0-2 in the first two installments, dropping very close match-ups with Cain Velasquez and then Tim Kennedy.

But this time I’m trying something different in the hopes of changing my luck. For Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum, I square off against Renato “Babalu” Sobral in a special video edition of Writer vs. Fighter, and I have to say I feel good about this one. Maybe it’s the fact that Sobral is essentially obligated to pick his Brazilian brother-in-arms Fabricio Werdum to pull off the upset over Fedor Emelianenko, or maybe it’s just that I don’t have to do as much actual writing for this one.

Whatever it is, I feel almost certain that I’m going to win this one. Or, you know, at least save some dignity with a tie. Check out the full video below to find out how “Babalu” and I see Saturday night’s action going down.

SAN JOSE – While most of the other fighters in attendance at Thursday afternoon’s Strikeforce “Fedor vs. Werdum” press conference at the HP Pavillion entered wearing garish MMA-themed t-shirts and menacing stares, Fedor Emelianenko strolled in wearing a faded t-shirt, a beat-up pair of cargo shorts, and a shy smile as he was greeted with a hug from opponent Fabricio Werdum.

Flanked by executives from M-1 Global and backed by his trusty translator, Emelianenko slumped in his chair and offered the occasional reluctant grin when questioned about his status as one of the most dangerous heavyweights in the sport.

I don’t think Fabricio Werdum is going to beat Fedor Emelianenko on Saturday, and neither do you, and neither does anyone we know. But it is possible that Werdum could beat Fedor, and although it would be a huge upset, it wouldn’t be as big an upset as Sokoudjou beating Antonio Rogerio Nogueira or Matt Serra beating Georges St. Pierre.

So if that huge upset happens, what happens next for Werdum, for Fedor, for Strikeforce, for M-1 Global and for all of MMA? A few scenarios are below.

Fedor Clarifies Recent Comments; “Did Not Want to Offend the UFC”

Earlier in the week we touched on the fact that while making the pre-Fabricio Werdum-fight, media rounds, having the spotlight once again on Fedor Emelianenko has reignited the ‘will Fedor ever sign with the UFC’ speculation. Naturally, yet again, this has fed more rampant ‘where does Fedor rank all time?’, ‘could he beat the UFC’s best heavyweights?’ and ‘why does Dana White love to make Fedor fans cry?’ discussion.

Of course, part of the reason for this has been due to various comments “The Last Emperor” has made himself. In a recent teleconference Fedor reportedly stated “I’m not a UFC fan”, before adding that “there seems to be negativity in a lot of their shows.” This, coupled with other recent statements where Fedor’s admitted he doesn’t give a flying eff about his critics or what they say, probably punted a lot of people’s hopes that he may still, someday, face Brock Lesnar, Shane Carwin, etc.

Well, in an interview this week with MMA Fighting’s Ben Fowlkes, Fedor had this to say, when asked to clarify what’s the difference between how Strikeforce and the UFC promote the sport.

“I did not want to offend the UFC in any way. What I meant is, I don’t like to watch fights in general. My main concern is what kind of culture I bring, myself.”

Interesting. Now is that just clarifying or backing off? Emelianenko went on to say that when his deal with Strikeforce is done, the UFC will have an opportunity to offer him “a contract that may be interesting to me.” Huh. And around and around we go…
