Drew Dober Paddy Pimblett UFC

UFC lightweight contender, Drew Dober has addressed speculation linking him with a potential May return against promotional-perfect contender, Paddy Pimblett, claiming that “big things” are in the works ahead of his next Octagon walk.

Dober, the current #14 ranked lightweight contender, earned his slot in the official top-15 rankings with an impressive, rallying finish over Bobby Green at UFC Vegas 66 back in December of last year. With his second round KO win, Dober landed alongside former interim champion, Dustin Poirier as the most prolific knockout striker in lightweight division history.

As for Pimblett, the former undisputed Cage Warriors featherweight champion co-headlined UFC 282 back in December to boot at the T-Mobile Arena, defeating Jared Gordon in a close, debated decision victory.

The victory came as the outspoken Liverpool native’s fourth consecutively under the UFC banner, following a trio of stoppage wins over Luigi Vendramini, Kazula Vargas, and Jordan Leavitt.

Drew Dober addresses rumors of potential fight with Paddy Pimblett

Set to miss the promotion’s return to the United Kingdom for UFC 287 in March amid surgery to address an ankle injury, Pimblett has been linked with a potential return against both Brazilian contender, Renato Moicano, and the above-mentioned, Dober – with the Colorado native addressing rumours of a fight in a rather cryptic manner.

We working on some big things this year,” Drew Dober tweeted in relation to a rumored fight with Paddy Pimblett.

In the midst of a three-fight undefeated streak, Dober, who’s most recent loss came by way of submission against current lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, has stopped the trio of Terrance McKinney, Rafael Alves, and the above-mentioned, Green with strikes.

26-11 as a professional, Dober has landed a whopping 13 career knockouts to go with a further six submission stoppages.

UFC lightweight Drew Dober is back in action this weekend and is sure to get a hero’s welcome from the Denver crowd due to him being based out of Colorado.

He will take on Jean Silva who will be making a quick turnaround for this fight after stopping Charles Jourdain just two weeks prior at UFC 303.

Given both men’s track records for putting opponents away with their heavy hands, the judges aren’t likely to be called into action in this fight.

If Dober is able to secure a knockout or TKO victory in this fight, he will overtake Dustin Poirier for the most finishes of this kind in lightweight history.

The two contenders have constantly added tallies to their records and you’d need to go all the way back to his 2018 fight with Jon Tuck to find the last time that Dober won a UFC fight via the scorecards.

Drew Dober Says He Purposefully Tries To Ignore Knockout Stats Because It Has Impacted Him In The Past

Currently tied with Poirier at 9 each, Dober has the opportunity this weekend at the Ball Arena to become the first 155-pound fighter to hit double figures in the UFC.

He recently revealed in an interview with Mike Bohn for MMA Junkie that this isn’t just something that he doesn’t spend much time thinking about – he actively chooses to ignore it.

Dober stated that he believes keeping these achievements in mind has negatively affected him in the past. Nowadays, he mentioned he rather wait for the knockouts to come than trying to look for them.

“The thing is, I received that record not even thinking about it and I think the moment I started thinking about it, my performances kind of dipped. So no, I stopped thinking about it, knockout record is great, we’re also tied for guillotine record so these are the things that you guys tell me after the fact, I get in there and I just do me.”

Islam Makhachev drew dober dustin poirier

UFC lightweight standout Drew Dober has a surprising opinion on a potential Islam Makhachev vs Dustin Poirier showdown. It would be a battle of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s protege looking to defend his UFC lightweight world title against the dangerous US-born ‘The Diamond’ Poirier.

Top-15 ranked lightweight Dober is currently on a three-fight TKO win streak in the UFC’s lightweight division. After his most recent TKO victory against Bobby Green, the American fighter sat down for an interview with James Lynch. On a UFC world title fight between Islam Makhachev and Dustin Poirier, he explained:

“I think Dustin Poirier could give him some problems. That would be a close fight. Really, the fight IQ in that fight would be the winning factor.” [Transcript courtesy of BJ Penn.com]

Dober has some experience against one of these fighters as he faced the now-champion Makhachev in 2021 and lost via submission.

Drew Dober says few can beat Islam Makhachev in the UFC

The US-born Dober is choosing himself and Poirier to defeat the reigning world champion Islam Makhachev, and no one else. On whether other fighters in the UFC’s lightweight division stand a chance against the Dagestani powerhouse, Dober said:

“As of right now, if I answer honestly, I think Islam Makhachev is an equation that the division hasn’t figured out yet. So I don’t really see him being defeated.”

Makhachev will next be facing the featherweight king Alexander Volkanovski in 2023 in an all-champions showdown. On this February UFC 284 fight, Dober said:

Man, [Alexander] Volkanovski, he’s got a solid chance, but I think there’s going to be a significant size difference in that fight. And I think Islam is going to surprise people.”
