Darren Till Cut by UFC

England’s ‘The Gorilla’ Darren Till has been a long-time staple in the UFC. It was recently revealed that the UFC is parting ways with the UK-born star.

‘UFC Roster Watch’ on Twitter first reported the news.

Darren Till recently responded on Twitter explaining the situation. According to Till, he requested this release. He said:

“What’s happening everyone, Me, Dana & Hunter are still cool as fuck. I asked UFC 2 remove me just 2 sort some other shit for the foreseeable, They happily agreed to release me out of contract which I appreciate. I’m not going anywhere, got big plans to execute & I’ll be back. ?

It is not clear what’s next for the UK-born MMA fighter. Some have speculated he may be competing in other MMA organizations and others believe he simply needs time away whether due to injuries or personal reasons. Till is a popular fan favorite and viewers are looking forward to what the future holds for ‘The Gorilla.’

Darren Till in the UFC

‘The Gorilla’ Darren Till was a very promising prospect in the UFC. At welterweight, he went on a four-fight win streak before challenging for a world title, a match in which he lost. He then began a move to the middleweight division. Since losing to Tyron Woodley for the welterweight world championship, Till has earned a record of 1-4 over four years.

The sparse schedule for the English athlete is largely due to suffering injuries. Since 2020, Till has dropped out of three booked matches due to an injury. In his most recent match in the UFC, Till was stopped via submission against South Africa’s Dricus du Plessis.

Brendan Allen

Brendan Allen now has a number next to his name thanks to an impressive showing at UFC Vegas 70 on Saturday night.

Allen found himself in an impromptu main event after the evening’s originally scheduled headliner, Ryan Spann vs. Nikita Krylov, was canceled at the last minute due to an illness suffered by Krylov. ‘All In’ made the most of his surprise spotlight by delivering a fantastic performance and scoring a third-round submission against Andre Muniz.

With his win, Brendan Allen moved into the No. 12 spot in the rankings while Muniz dropped two spots from No. 11 to No. 13. Perhaps the biggest victim of the rankings shift is Darren Till who found himself out of the top 15 altogether. Till’s omission from the rankings is not all that surprising considering the struggles he has faced getting into the win column in recent years. ‘The Gorilla’ has lost five of his last six, the most recent being a third-round submission loss to Dricus Du Plessis in December.

Brendan Allen’s victory over Muniz extended his win streak to four. Now ranked in the top 15, Allen will likely see a significant increase in competition going forward.

Tatiana Suarez Joins Brendan Allen in the UFC Rankings

Brendan Allen wasn’t the only fighter to burst into the rankings at UFC Vegas 70. After nearly four years away from the Octagon, Tatiana Suarez made her triumphant return on Saturday night. Immediately eliminating any concerns of cage rust, Suarez delivered a masterful performance, submitting Montana Del La Rosa in the second round of their main card bout. With the win, the Covina, Cali native moved to 9-0 and implanted herself in both the strawweight and the women’s pound-for-pound rankings.

Suarez is now the No. 13 ranked strawweight, pushing Luana Pinheiro and Emily Ducote back one spot. She also earned the No. 15 spot in the women’s pound-for-pound ranking.

Below is an explanation of how the UFC determines its rankings:

“Rankings were generated by a voting panel made up of media members. The media members were asked to vote for who they feel are the top fighters in the UFC by weight class and pound-for-pound. A fighter is only eligible to be voted on if they are in active status in the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight class. However, the champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings” (h/t MMA Mania).

Leon Edwards UFC Darren Till

Reigning UFC welterweight champion, Leon Edwards weighs in on Darren Till’s unfortunate run of form.

Till, 30, has not had his hand raised since his decision win over Kelvin Gastelum in November of 2019. Prior to that win, you’d also have to go back a bit – 18 months, in fact, to find Till’s previous win which at the time was meant to be his coming out party. The Liverpudlian would defeat the then-ranked #1 welterweight contender, Stephen Thompson.

Till was once considered the best prospect out of the U.K., but now fresh off another loss, this time at the hands of Dricus Du Plessis, it seems less and less likely that Till will reach the heights that many hoped.

Leon Edwards talks Darren Till

As part of his media duties, Edwards spoke about Till and his hope for the future. The pair could of realistically been matched up at one pint in time, but Edwards expressed genuine concern for Till’s fighting career.

For me, I just want to see Darren do well, you know?” Edwards said. “I feel like he’s a little bit loose with what he’s doing and where he’s going… For me, I just want him to somehow find his path. Whether it’s back in Liverpool where he started or somewhere else. I want him to get that confidence back in himself that he had in 2019 where he thought he was the best in the world.” (H/T BJPENN.com)

Edwards is set to make the first defence of his 170lb title in a trilogy bout against Kamaru Usman, in the main event of UFC 286 in London, England. ‘Rocky’ now finds himself as the figurehead of the newest generation of UK fighters, who are steadily making their way into the UFC rankings.

Do you agree with Leon Edwards?
