Due to his lengthy legal history, and his attitude that may sometimes be perceived as ‘arrogant’, former UFC light heavyweight champion and reigning pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones hasn’t always received the best treatment from fans.

In fact, he was stripped of his long-held title after being arrested on felony hit-and-run charges last year in his home of New Mexico.

After sorting his issues out, however, he recently returned at last month’s UFC 197, scoring a somewhat lackluster, but ultimately one-sided decision victory over Ovince St. Preux to become the interim 205-pound titleholder.

Former Jones foe and fighter turned analyst Chael Sonnen recently touched on “Bones’” UFC 197 performance, simply calling it ‘terrible’ although using it to note just how talented the former divisional kingpin is:

“Even with that terrible performance Jon Jones just had, I don’t know anybody that can beat him. As bad as he just looked, I don’t know anybody that could beat him. He’s that much better than the rest. We can sit around and go, ‘What a bad performance,’ and it was. It was terrible. I still don’t know anyone that could beat the guy. That’s how good he’s gotten.” Sonnen told Bloody Elbow.

Usually a fighter as skilled as Jones is highly revered among fans, and of course he does have his legion of loyal fans, but Sonnen, blasting Jones in the process, claims that spectators just can’t get behind a ‘drunken coke addict’:

“Then he wonders why nobody can get behind him. He shows up to the press conference acting like a fool. He comes in trying to take over the press conference like everybody was supposed to be happy for him that he won. He didn’t realize that they were looking at the drunken coke addict champ, with all the talent in the world, that just can’t get it straight. When you have that level of arrogance, it’s tough to get behind him. Then sure enough, you’ve got the press, ‘Ra-ra-ra-ra-ra-ra,’ they’re really going for it. Man, this wouldn’t have happened back in my day. We’d have grabbed a guy like this in the back and straightened him out. We just would have.”

Well, Sonnen definitely took a serious dig at Jones, who will meet Daniel Cormier in a title unifier at July 9’s UFC 200.

What are your thoughts on the former and possibly soon to be champion?

Jon Jones Thanks Conor McGregor For UFC 200 Slot

Originally, UFC featherweight champion the “Notorious” Conor McGregor was scheduled to headline July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 card from Las Vegas, Nevada in a highly-anticipated rematch against Nate Diaz, the man who submitted him in a welterweight bout back at March 5’s UFC 196.

Coming off of his first Octagon loss, McGregor apparently wanted to put his sole focus on his training rather than on the hectic media obligations he had become accustomed to doing on his way to global stardom.

Ultimately, the “Notorious” one opted not to leave his training camp in Iceland and head to Las Vegas for promotional responsibilities, leading UFC president Dana White to pull him from the card, and essentially scrap his rematch with Diaz all together.

Despite the stacked nature of UFC 200, the card was lacking a main event with the company’s biggest star being taken off the card.

Soon after the announcement, however, the promotion announced that reigning 205-pound title holder Daniel “DC” Cormier would finally once again meet former divisional kingpin Jon “Bones” Jones in the evening’s main attraction.

The two first met back in January 2015 with Jones scoring a clear cut unanimous decision victory. Legal issues later in the year, however, forced the UFC to strip Jones of his title, giving Cormier the opportunity to fight for and win the vacant strap at April 2015’s UFC 187.

Jones has since been reinstated, and was recently victorious in his return bout over Ovince St. Preux, winning the interim title in the process.

“Bones” seemingly couldn’t be any happier with the situation even given the promotional requirements for the massive card. Recently taking to his official Instagram account, the former champion posted a video of him shooting for UFC 200, thanking McGregor in the process:

After the UFC pulled Conor McGregor from his scheduled UFC 200 headliner against Nate Diaz, the promotion was in search of a new main event for the blockbuster July 9, 2016 card from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The search is no more, however, as UFC President Dana White announced this morning (April 27, 2016) on Good Morning America that reigning light heavyweight champion Daniel “DC” Cormier would rematch former divisional kingpin Jon “Bones” Jones in the evening’s main attraction.

The two first met at January 2015’s UFC 182 with Jones soundly defeating Cormier, but “Bones” would soon run into a plethora of legal issues forcing the UFC to strip him of his title, and giving Cormier the chance to slide in and capture the vacant strap.

After nearly 16 months on the sidelines, Jones finally returned to action at this past weekend’s (April 23, 2016) UFC 197, scoring a unanimous decision victory over late replacement opponent Ovince St. Preux.

Cormier was supposed to meet Jones on the card, but he was forced to withdraw after suffering a leg injury in training.

After tuning into see a somewhat rusty Jones show up at UFC 197, Cormier recently took to his official Instagram to bash “Bones”, saying that the rematch will be ‘light work’:

While “DC”, a former Olympian, is undoubtedly a decorated fighter, he shouldn’t look too much into Jones’ most recent performance.

After spending so much time away from the sport, it’s understandable that the former champion may have needed some time to get back into the swing of things, and we’ve all seen how deadly Jones is when he’s at his best which he claims he will be when it’s time to meet Cormier.

Will “DC” finally be able to break “Bones”, or will Jones recapture his title on July 9th?

Daniel Cormier: There’s No Way ‘New’ Jon Jones Can Beat Me

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Bones may have scored a unanimous decision victory over Ovince St. Preux in his highly anticipated return at UFC 197 this past weekend (April 23, 2016), but he didn’t necessarily show up in the form we have grown accustom to seeing him in.

Jones has been on the sidelines for nearly 16 months dealing with legal issues, and perhaps he experienced a bit of ring rust as UFC president Dana White feels.

“Bones” was originally scheduled to take on current champion Daniel “DC” Cormier for the title, but the former Olympian was forced to withdraw from the bout due to injury.

Cormier, who lost to Jones back at UFC 182, saw a difference in the pound-for-pound king’s performance as well, implying that he would have been very successful against the ‘new’ Jones had he been healthy enough to fight:

“He got the job done,” Cormier said on FOX Sports 1’s post-fight show. “A lot of times, most guys, they don’t have their best performance, they lose. They don’t get it done. So it shows how special Jon is. That being said, very disappointed that I didn’t get to compete tonight because I do believe that if he showed up in the form that he did tonight, or if this is the new Jon Jones, there’s no way that guy can beat me.”

Despite not being able to compete at UFC 197, Cormier is indeed looking forward to his rematch with his most bitter rival.

In fact, it may come sooner than expected as July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 card is in need of a main event after featherweight champion Conor McGregor was scrapped from his scheduled rematch with Nate Diaz.

Jones has already said that he’d be honored to fight at UFC 200, and if Cormier is healthy, it should be a go:

“I go to the doctor on Monday,” Cormier said. “I feel much better already. I did the stem cell (treatment) and I’m able to walk good now. I feel like I can be healthy for anytime. UFC 200 needs a main event. (If) the doctor gives me the go-ahead, I’ll be ready to go. Let’s get this guy back in the octagon. Let’s go. I want nothing more than to fight this guy every day of the week.”

Given Jones’ recent performance, how do you see his rematch with “DC” playing out?

Dana White: Jon Jones Looked Rusty At UFC 197

After spending nearly 16 months on the sidelines dealing with legal issues, reigning pound-for-pound king and former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones finally made his long awaited return in the main event of last night’s (April 23, 2016) UFC 197 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Although originally scheduled to meet Daniel Cormier for the undisputed title, Jones ultimately clashed with No. 6-ranked Ovince St. Preux for the interim strap after Cormier suffered an injury.

“Bones” would go on to score a unanimous decision victory over OSP, winning every round on the judges’ score cards.

Despite Jones’ victory, UFC president Dana White feels as if it was a ‘good’ thing that the former champion didn’t meet Cormier right away in his return:

“I’m a firm believer in ring rust,” White said on the FOX Sports 1 post-fight show. “Jon Jones looked rusty tonight and it was a really good thing for him that it was OSP tonight, the sixth-ranked guy, and not Cormier, because he was able to get some rounds under his belt, get in there and feel himself out. Now he knows what he has to do when he gets back in the gym.”

Continuing on at the post-fight press conference, White admitted that while Jones may not   have looked his best, he did indeed get the victory which of course is most important:

“Did Jon look like a world-beater?” White said at the post-fight press conference. “Did he look like the Jon Jones who many say is possibly the greatest ever? No, but he won tonight.”

Now the interim champion, Jones will finally get the chance to reclaim what he feels is rightfully his when he meets Cormier for the undisputed title, a bout that could headline July 9’s UFC 200.
