This weekend, former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz will make his return to mixed martial arts (MMA) competition.

Ortiz takes on professional wrestling legend and former mixed martial artist Alberto El Patron. As a fun stipulation, Ortiz will put his old UFC belt up for grabs, while El Patron puts up his old WWE title. The fight goes down from Hidalgo, Texas on Saturday, December 7 inside the Payne Arena.

The fight will be contested at 210 pounds. Combate Americas CEO Campbell McLaren took to his Twitter and listed out his top 10 pound-for-pound fighters over the age of 40. At the top of his list was none other than Ortiz, who he actually listed over Daniel Cormier, one of the greatest fighters of all time and a former two-division simultaneous champion.

He did, however, list Cormier at number two, with El Patron earning the number three spot ahead of names such as Urijah Faber, Demian Maia, Yoel Romero, Fabricio Werdum, and more. Check out his list here:

  • 1. Tito Ortiz
  • 2. Daniel Cormier
  • 3. Alberto Rodríguez
  • 4. Urijah Faber
  • 5. Demian Maia
  • 6. Yoel Romero
  • 7. Fabricio Werdum
  • 8. Anderson Silva
  • 9. Chael Sonnen
  • 10. Andrei Arlovski

What do you think about McLaren naming Ortiz as the pound-for-pound best fighter over 40-years-old?

Alberto El Patron isn’t fighting Tito Ortiz for the money — however, there are plenty of other reasons why.

El Patron will be returning to mixed martial arts action for the first time since 2010 when he meets Ortiz in a Combate Americas pay-per-view event on December 7 in McAllen, Texas.

Most would assume the 42-year-old president of Combate Americas is returning to combat sports for a lucrative payday. However, the former WWE champion claims he’s doing it for the right reasons:

“I keep saying this — I’m doing it for the right reasons,” Rodriguez told MMA Fighting. “No. 1, because the company Combate Americas, we’re killing it. We’re killing the competition. We have amazing numbers, the ratings are fantastic. We are changing the face of the Latinos in MMA.

“I have a lot of Mexicans and Latinos looking up to me and me being a role model after all these years. I want to continue inspiring people in Latin America or Mexico or anywhere around the world.”

The most important factor, however, is because Combate Americas supported El Patron during a nasty divorce. And so, this is his way of paying the promotion back:

“I think this is really important — the main reason was my divorce was really difficult for me, for my life,” he added. “The battle for the custody of my kids took a lot from me and it was a very difficult time in my life. The company, my bosses, they have been supporting me since day No. 1.

“When you go through things like that in your life, you start thinking about who are real friends, the real people that stood up for you in those difficult moments. Because I always say it’s easy to be friends with Alberto Del Rio in the spotlight, money, girls, fun, but to be Alberto Rodriguez’s friend, the real person, going through difficult times like other people out there, this company has been with me.”

So again, he isn’t doing this for money. Which is why the plan for now is to only return to MMA as a one-time thing. But one can never say for sure in this crazy sport:

“I’m not doing this like some others out there because of money problems or because they don’t find anything to do with their lives,” Rodriguez explained. “I’m lucky to have a company like Combate Americas where this is a job, this is a place where I feel at home. I don’t just work for them. I’m enjoying what I’m doing for them and I’ll continue being on TV and I’ll continue doing pro wrestling in Mexico. That’s what I want to do right now.

“It would be really hard for me to say I’ll do it one more time but that’s why they have the old saying, ‘never say never.’ Right now I’m saying yes [this is it] but that’s what I said before my very first MMA fight. Never say never.”

Tito Ortiz may have inadvertently revealed the date and venue for his upcoming mixed martial arts fight with former WWE star Alberto Del Rio.

The two are set to collide in a Combate Americas event and even got the ball rolling with a rather cringeworthy faceoff last month. However, there was no date or venue for the fight. Until now.

In the latest video of his YouTube series, Ortiz revealed he was in contact with Donald Trump Jr. via Instagram. Ortiz’s message could be read stating it would take place in Hidalgo, Texas on December 7. Combate Americas, meanwhile, has yet to confirm anything.

Trump Jr. replied that he would see if he could make the event. You can see the message below:

In addition, you can see the full video below:

Ortiz last competed in MMA in November last year when he finally avenged his two defeats to Chuck Liddell with a knockout victory.

As for Del Rio, he does have MMA experience having notably fought Mirko Cro Cop. However, the Combate Americas executive has not competed since a TKO loss to Mamoru Yamamoto in 2010.

Tito Ortiz is now a member of Combate Americas and his first fight is set to be against Alberto Del Rio.

Del Rio is currently serving as an executive for Combate Americas but will step away from that to step inside the cage for an event to fight Ortiz. The two have really played up their rivalry as of late, but the two were in the cage and decided to call out each other out again. Even though the fight is set.

However, the way they did it got some people saying it was scripted and arguably the worst promo in MMA history. Well, take a look for yourself.

Tito Ortiz last fought back in November of last year at the first Golden Boy MMA event. There, in the main event, he knocked out Chuck Liddell. Before that,” The Huntington Beach Badboy” was fighting in Bellator where his last fight was at Bellator 170 where submitted Chael Sonnen.

The 44-year-old is currently 20-12 as a pro and on a two-fight winning streak. He is a UFC Hall of Famer and former UFC light heavyweight champion. He also has notable wins over the likes of Stephan Bonnar, Ryan Bader, Ken Shamrock (three times), Vitor Belfort, Forrest Griffin, and Wanderlei Silva among others.

Alberto Del Rio, meanwhile, is 9-5 as a pro and fought PRIDE and DEEP early on his career. However, he has not competed in an MMA event since 2010 where he was knocked out by Mamoru Yamamoto. He did fight Mirko Cro Cop in PRIDE and was knocked out in just 46 seconds.

When and where this fight will take place is still unknown.

Is this promo between Tito Ortiz and Alberto Del Rio the worst promo in MMA history?
