Brian Stann is coming off two victories via his excellent punching power, having TKO’d Chris Leben in the first round of his UFC 125 bout and KO’d Jorge Santiago at UFC 130. Yet, Stann is a prominent (+225) underdog to Chael Sonnen for this weekend’s UFC 136. Sonnen is best known for his wrestling prowess, specifically as a Greco-Roman wrestling champion while Stann’s pointed MMA flaw is decisively his wrestling, which he professes to have targeted in his training regime over the past two years. But Stann doesn’t seem to think his two years of wrestling will be his key to victory this Saturday night and instead reminded us that he can punch. Stann said:

“I think sometimes when oddsmakers and people keep telling me about this fight and how big a longshot I am, I think people forget – I even went back to my bout agreement and checked – but I can punch in this fight. So, I feel good.”

It’s good for Stann to have that kind of confidence…and humor; however, getting knocked out isn’t exactly one of Sonnen’s weaknesses. In fact in his entire pro-career, Sonnen has only lost a fight via TKO twice and the last time that happened was in 2004 (to Terry Martin at XFO 4). So, yeah, keep your hands ready to fire Stann, but maybe look to armbar Sonnen, as well. In Chael Sonnen’s (25-11-1) career he has lost via armbar 4 times (the most recent being his Triangle Armbar loss to Anderson Silva in the 5th round of that spectacular (though possibly steroid induced UFC 117) Middleweight title-fight. He’s also been choked out 3 times… This goes to show you that although Sonnen is a member of a top known grappling team like Team Quest, you can still use his very strengths to overpower him, which is actually a great essence to Martial Arts… the ability to use an opponent’s energy to leverage against him.

So keep that in mind Brian Stann and if anything, both you guys, please just give us one hell of a clean [meaning steroid free ;) ] fight. I cannot wait for this one.

Video: Dana White Talks Two Shows in One Night, Who’s Next For Anderson and the Future of Strikeforce

Heavy.com’s Megan Olivi caught up with Dana White following the UFC 136 press conference today and picked the UFC president’s brain about a few hot topics that have been swirling around MMA blogs and messageboards as of late.

White gave some insight into how he expects the UFC’s first dual event to go down, logistically, and shared his thoughts on what title implications certain bouts from UFC 136 might have including Stann versus Sonnen and Lauzon versus Guillard. He also mentioned that the future of Strikeforce could be determined this week as Showtime will likely announce whether or not it intends to re-up with the now Zuffa-owned promotion.

Of note was White’s explanation of the “All American Effect” that Stann has over the division. Dana explains that he’s so well-respected by his peers that nobody wants to fight him and that’s the reason Chael Sonnen couldn’t even fake an insult or two to lob at him during the lead up to their bout.

According to “The Baldfather” the winner of Stann-Sonnen won’t necessarily get the next shot at Anderson Silva since Dan Henderson is back in the mix, which could mean that a title eliminator may be in the cards if “Hendo” gets past Shogun.

HOUSTON — Chael Sonnen and Brian Stann both hope to make their case as the next man to fight Anderson Silva on Saturday. But their UFC 136 fight, largely considered a possible No. 1 contenders bout, is no sure thing to produce a middleweight title challenger.

On Wednesday, UFC president Dana White said there was more than one possibility for Silva, and he seemed willing to wait to see how things play out before committing to a plan.

One alternate possibility? If Dan Henderson beats Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 139 next month, he might bump to the front of the line.

The returning star recently vacated the Strikeforce light heavyweight championship to come back to the UFC. And though his first fight back will be at light heavyweight, he’s willing to move down to 185 for another crack at Silva.

“We’ve got to see what happens here,” White said. “The winner of [Sonnen-Stann] deserves a shot at Anderson Silva? It’d be tough to say no. But if Henderson beats Shogun, it’d be tough to say that Henderson doesn’t deserve the shot either. So we’ll see what happens.”

White also revealed that if Silva had been healthy, he likely would have been slotted into an immediate title bout with Henderson. It would actually be a rematch, as the two squared off at UFC 82 in March 2008, with Silva winning via rear- naked choke in the second round.

Meanwhile, Sonnen seems to have toned down some of his usually pointed comments aimed at Silva, a fact that led a Brazilian reporter to ask him about how much of what he says is for show. Sonnen, who came across a bit subdued throughout the UFC 136 press conference, suddenly came to life, saying that he still has the long-reigning champion in his crosshairs.

“I’m not scared of that guy, I’m not going to apologize to that guy,” said Sonnen, who is favored to beat Stann this weekend. “And I appreciate what the Brazilian people said, and a lot of that was said in good fun. But the bottom line is I’m sticking a finger in his chest, I’m picking a fight, and I’m not going to quit.”

Whether Henderson (28-8), Sonnen (25-11-1) or Stann (11-3) receives the opportunity might also be a question of timing. Silva is still on the mend after a shoulder injury. The problem isn’t considered serious, but simply a matter of time and rehabilitation.

“He has bursitis in his shoulder,” White said. “The doctor told him he needs to rest it for eight weeks, and he’s doing physical therapy. It’s not like he’s got some injury that needs surgery or anything like that. As amazing as this guy is, we forget this guy is 37 years old.”

Regardless of the challenger, upsetting Silva will be an uphill task. The popular champion is riding a UFC-record 14-fight win streak, and he’s successfully defended his belt nine straight times, also a record.

Chael SonnenChael Sonnen got dealt a tough hand when the UFC matched him up against Brian Stann for UFC 136. It’s not necessarily the difficulty of the fight itself — though Stann’s no pushover, oddsmakers give the edge to Sonnen.

No, for the Sonnen the trouble is all in the approach. How do you keep your over-the-top, pro wrestler-meets-insult comic persona going when you’re fighting a war hero who’s so inoffensive and wholesome that he could make a slice of apple pie feel like a dirty commie by comparison?

Judging by Sonnen’s demeanor at Wednesday’s pre-fight press conference, you don’t. You play nice. You praise instead of berate. You do everything short of writing him a letter of recommendation, and then you wait for an opportunity to go back to talking about Anderson Silva.

“Nobody wants to fight Brian Stann,” Sonnen said on Wednesday afternoon in Houston. “I’m not the only guy and that’s not a big secret. But our paths are going to cross sooner or later. He keeps beating people up and so that’s just the way it goes.”

Presumably Sonnen then had to rush back to the hotel for some mouthwash just to get the unfamiliar taste of compliments out of his mouth.

Not that Stann was making things easy on him, mind you. He praised Sonnen’s wrestling ability, his penchant for making other people fight his kind of fight, and even jogged down memory lane with his opponent, telling a story about when Sonnen served as a ringside announcer for his first pro bout.

“I don’t even think he remembers, but I remember meeting him there and he was very respectful to a guy who was 0-0 at the time,” Stann said, to which Sonnen replied that he remembered the fight and the meeting very clearly and recalled that Stann was “very nice back.”

“Awwww,” said UFC president Dana White, who might have been wondering what happened to the guy who once sat down at a pre-fight press conference and declared, “I don’t really know what respect means. That sounds like something a kid in the street says after he’s getting ready to take your coat and your shoes.”

Of course, that little gem came before Sonnen’s bout with the UFC middleweight champ Silva, who remains his go-to target for his choicest bits of trash talk.

“I’m out trying to pick a fight and I’m not making any qualms about it. I’ve been after Anderson for some time and that’s it,” said Sonnen, who added that he also had “a beef” with the other fighters in the UFC who continually ask for title shots.

“I’ve never told Dana I want a title fight; I told him I want the title,” Sonnen said. “That’s a big difference between me and everybody else.”

You see? He’s still got his gift with language when he wants it, but against a guy like Stann there just isn’t much you can do with it. A man who once explained that he doesn’t believe in utilizing the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu guard because that would involve lying on his back with another man between his legs and “I’m a Republican and we don’t do that,” probably also isn’t going to make much headway trying to insult a former U.S. Marine with more boy-next-door charm than he knows what to do with.

Maybe the best Sonnen can do is play the nice guy for now, or at least as nice as he can stand to be. One way or another, he acknowledged, he still has a fight on Saturday night, and what happens once the cage door slams shut is the same whether you can find something bad to say about the other guy or not.

“When that guy in the shark suit gets out of the ring and the guy with the dreadlocks says ‘fight,'” Sonnen said, “I will.”

And if things go his way, maybe soon he’ll be able to get back to being the Chael Sonnen we’ve come to know and expect.
