Brian Ortega and Yair Rodriguez are set to square off in the main event of the July 16th card in Long Island, New York.

The matchup headlines two of the best fighters in the featherweight division, and looks to be a title eliminator for both. The fight will be a five round fight, since it is a main event. It should be a really god fight between two guys that have different fighting styles.

Both Rodriguez and Ortega are on the fringe of possibly getting a title fight in their future. Ortega had most recently had a title fight against Alexander Volkanovski that unfortunately for him, didn’t go his way. Ortega had come very close to submitting Volkanovski a couple of times in that fight, but couldn’t get ‘Volk’ to tap.

This will the fourth straight headlining event for Brian Ortega, while also being Rodriguez’s fourth in five fights that he has headlined.

Rodriguez is looking to get his first title shot of his career. He is known as one of the best strikers in the entire division and went toe to toe with Max Holloway, in a fight that saw Rodriguez suffer from a gnarly foot injury halfway through the fight. A win over Ortega could prove to be the win that gets Rodriguez his first title shot.

Depending on what Volkanovski would like to do next may be what dictates who Rodriguez fights next as well. There have been rumblings of a possible move too Lightweight to challenge for the championship if he beats Holloway again. However, if Holloway gets a win over Volkanovski, we could see a fourth fight between the two.

If that is the case, a fight between the winner of Calvin Kattar and Josh Emmett would be in the cards for whoever comes out victorious of this bout.

Ortega last fought in the UFC Octagon at UFC 266, falling short against Alexander Volkanovski via a unanimous decision in arguably one of the best fights of 2021. A fight between him and Yair Rodriguez is reportedly in the works for later this year.

But MMA is more than likely one of the last things on Ortega’s mind at the moment. In a recent post to social media, he revealed that he was involved in some sort of undisclosed police incident this week and isn’t able to return to the U.S. after his license was taken by officers.

“Bitch ass corrupt cops wanted my money I told them fuck you so they took my license so I won’t be able to get back home,” Ortega shared on his Instagram story.

While Ortega’s activity in the UFC has been lacking in recent years, he remains one of the top featherweights in the promotion. Before the loss to Volkanovski, he earned big wins over the likes of ‘The Korean Zombie’ and Frankie Edgar in the cage.

There is no official update on Ortega’s whereabouts and status of returning stateside, but MMA News will keep you updated with the latest developments.

UFC featherweight contender, Brian Ortega has detailed footage of an apparent police stop in a recent visit to Mexico, claiming responding officers refused to issue him back his driving license without payment.

Ortega, a native of Los Angeles, California – has spoken openly and proudly of his Mexican heritage, however, in a recent visit to the country, footage posted on social media appears to show Ortega involved in a traffic stop – with Ortega claiming responding officers refused to give him back his license without receiving money from him.

“Brian Ortega told these corrupt cops in Mexico that wanted his money to f*ck off, they took his license so now he won’t be able to leave,” Twitter user, Anthony Romero tweeted. “I hope the @ufc can help him out somehow.”

In the tweet, Romero accompanies video footage taken from Ortega’s official Instagram account, with Ortega, apparently located in Sonora, posting the caption, “B*tch ass corrup (sic) cops wanted my money I told them f*ck off so they took my license so I won’t be able to get back home.”

In his most recent Octagon appearance, Ortega headlined UFC 266 back in September in his second attempt at securing undisputed featherweight gold – dropping a unanimous decision loss to current champion, Alexander Volkanovski in a Fight of the Year contender.

Ortega had managed an impressive, one-sided victory over incoming UFC 273 headliner, the #4 ranked, Chan Sung Jung in his most recent victory – back in October 2020.

Brian Ortega became the first fighter to finish Frankie Edgar with strikes back in March 2018

Whilst a return opponent for Ortega has yet to be booked at the time of publication, the promotion, as per fellow division contender, Yair Rodriguez are working on pairing the two of them together for a high-profile matchup this summer

“I had discussed with Brian (Ortega), it was an unwritten agreement, that we would not fight unless it was necessary,” Yair Rodriguez said. “Unfortunately, we find ourselves in a position where we have to fight against each other to reach the goal that we have, to become world champions.”

“I am happy to have the opportunity to face a great warrior like Brian Ortega, I am happy that more doors are opening thanks to the work that we have been able to show every time we get into the Octagon,” Yair Rodriguez continued. “And there is talk that the fight [between us], it could happen in mid-June or July, we know that anything can happen, those are the talks, nothing has been signed.”

Brian Ortega and Yair Rodriguez are reportedly being targeted by the UFC in what will be an electric fight at 145lbs.

The two featherweights are known for emphatic wars, and should this fight come to fruition it will surely help grease the chains in a division lacking serious movement at the top.

Ariel Helwani first reported the news, and it’s unclear the date of this competition and if it’ll be the main event match or not for whatever card it lands on.

Brian Ortega vs Yair Rodriguez: Insanity Will Ensue

Brian Ortega (15-2, 7-2-1NC UFC) is currently enduring the hardest chapter in his career right now, 1-2 in his last three fights. “T-City” made his UFC debut on an eight-fight win streak and won via rear-naked choke submission. However, this would be overturned to a “No Contest” after Ortega tested positive for anabolic steroids.

After this, “T-City” would bounce back and blow through the division, finishing everyone in his path on the way to a title shot against Max Holloway. This would be the beginning of his current 1-2 run and the first of his two losses.

After almost two full years away from the game sharpening his skills, Ortega would make a victorious comeback against Chang Sung Jung and look so improved and refined that he’d get granted another title shot. This time, it was with Alexander Volkanovski, and although Ortega fought to the best of his abilities he’d lose once again in a UFC title fight.

Yair Rodriguez (13-3, 8-2-1NC UFC) is a Mexican-born fighter who always puts a high degree of flair into his battles. Known for his explosive kicks, flying, and spinning attacks, you must expect the unexpected when facing across the octagon from “El Pantera”.

Rodriguez has shared a similar career path to that of Brian Ortega, minus the UFC title fights. He came into the promotion and sprinted his way to the end zone that is his division’s upper echelon, and then met adversity. Frankie Edgar would become his second-ever loss due to a doctor stoppage, and most lately Holloway would defeat him in what was one of the most exciting fights of 2021.

This was first reported by MMA journalist Ariel Helwani on his Substack channel. ESPN Deportes has since confirmed the bout.

Ortega lost to UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 266 via unanimous decision. He nearly secured a submission win on numerous occasions throughout the fight but couldn’t quite pull through over five rounds of action.

Before the loss to Volkanovski, Ortega earned a dominant win over Chan Sung Jung (otherwise known as The Korean Zombie) following a loss to former featherweight champion Max Holloway.

Rodriguez made his return to the Octagon against Holloway at UFC Vegas 42. The two featherweights engaged in a back-and-forth clash with Holloway walking away with a decision win.

Rodriguez had been sidelined for two years following a win over Jeremy Stephens in Oct. 2019. His absence was preceded by impressive wins over BJ Penn and Alex Caceres.

Ortega and Rodriguez have all the makings of putting on a show in their fight. They’re two of the most dangerous featherweights in the UFC who have proven to be versatile in the cage.
