Press Release – (22.11.11) Europe’s leading Mixed Martial Arts promotion, BAMMA, is proud to announce the final fight card for its Nottingham event taking place at the Capital FM Arena on 10th December.

Bamma 8 boasts a stunning card that showcases some of the cream of UK fight talent, including a spectrum of fighters hailing from Nottingham’s world renowned and legendary fight camp, The Rough House.

Recent changes to the fight card include an explosive, technical Lightweight clash between Colin ‘Freakshow’ Fletcher (6-1-0) and David Round (5-4-0 ) that promises fireworks for the purists; and a BAMMA debut for Flyweights Ian Malone (2-0-0) and Brian Hislop (3-1-0).

As previously announced; headlining the event is the highly anticipated bout between the UK’s no.1 ranked Light Heavyweight, Jimi ‘The Posterboy’ Manuwa, and France’s Anthony Rea. The Posterboy stands undefeated with a record of 10-0-0; has won 8 of his fights by knock out, while 7 of his fights have been title bouts or defences. It has never taken him more than two rounds to finish an opponent. Manuwa’s reputation is dangerous and his return to the cage long awaited. With a record of 22 – 13 – 0, the more experienced Rea is no easy contest for Manuwa, with a Who’s Who of opponents under his belt and 13 of his wins by TKO.

Undefeated BAMMA British Middleweight Champion and serving British Armed Forces, Afghan vet, Jack Marshman (9-0-0) will be back to defend his Lonsdale title against Wolfslair’s Lee “Leeroy” Barnes in a contest that fans will love. At BAMMA 7, Marshman wowed the crowd with a sustained war against Carl Noon, in which he famously turned around fortune at the last hour to clinch the title.

Fresh off a decision win against Frank Trigg at BAMMA 7, Team Rough House fighter Jimmy Wallhead (22-6-0) will be making an exciting step up to face former Pride, EliteXC and Strikeforce warrior, Joey ‘Smokin’ Villasenor (29-9-0) in his long awaited BAMMA debut. This explosive bout is yet another strong contender for fight of the night.

Other card highlights include Rough House’s UFC vet Andre Winner taking on Sweden’s Diego Gonzalez in a World Lightweight Title eliminator fight; while charismatic submission artist, Paul McVeigh, will make his BAMMA debut against Erik Perez. UFC veteran Curt Warburton makes his BAMMA debut against Tim Newman while Golden Glory’s Jason Jones also joins BAMMA in a Light Heavyweight contest against the undefeated Mark Godbeer.

BAMMA 8 makes a breakthrough to the US mainstream as it will be televised live via HD Net in an exclusive new deal.

BAMMA CEO, David Green, says:

“BAMMA can be proud of this Nottingham event, which features some of the UK’s top household names on their home turf and brings it back to the fans. From the early days, the city has established itself as a spiritual home for UK MMA, with Nottingham’s Rough House being an important player in the growth of the sport; and with Nottingham media being huge advocates. As well as being honoured to present BAMMA 8 to Nottingham fight fans, we are very excited to have the opportunity, via HD Net, SyFy and The Fight Network to showcase the best of British MMA to both domestic and international audiences”.

With the expectation that former UFC middleweight Nate ‘The Great’ Marquardt would debut with BAMMA this December as part of the promotions BAMMA 8 card, it was a bit of surprise to fans when the promotion announced he’d actually make his debut in February.

As part of a Press Release for BAMMA 8, the British Academy of Mixed Martial Arts stated Marquardt would debut against another former UFC vet, Yoshiyuki ‘Zenko’ Yoshida (13-6), on February 11th at the LG Arena in Birmingham, England as part of the BAMMA 9 card.

Coincidentally, the venue also hosts tomorrow’s UFC 138 event.

Marquardt signed with BAMMA earlier this fall after his suspension for high testosterone levels was lifted by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission. ‘The Great’ had been using hormone replacement therapy for low testosterone levels, but due to a miscalculation was not able to meet the Pennsylvania state levels for testosterone before a scheduled fight with Rick Story at UFC on Versus 4. He was immediately released from the UFC at that time.

Previous to that incident, Marquardt was 2-1 over his last three bouts, having his last fight in March at UFC 128 earning a decision victory over Dan Miller. Before that, he lost a No. 1 contender match to Yushin Okami at UFC 122 and had stopped Rousimar Palhares at UFN 22 by TKO.

Yoshida made five Octagon appearances, with the last one taking place in 2010. He was cut after a second straight defeat. Since that time, ‘Zenko’ has gone 2-1 most recently beating Phil Baroni by unanimous decision in September at the ONE FC: Champion vs. Champion event. The Japanese fighter has earned seven wins by (T)KO, three by submission, and twice by decision over his career.
