Mackenzie Dern

Mackenzie Dern received some criticism from Dana White following her dominant win over Angela Hill last month.

Dern scored by far the most impressive win of her mixed martial arts career thus far, moving to 8-3 in the UFC with a 25-minute shellacking of strawweight mainstay Angela Hill. It was a perfect performance that saw Dern in complete control for five rounds. Mixing up her striking and world-class grappling, the photogenic BJJ specialist left Las Vegas with her hand raised via a decisive unanimous decision.

However, Dern revealed that Dana White had one very specific gripe regarding Mackenzie Dern’s otherwise spectacular outing.

“I went to talk to him, he told me how he liked the fight, talked to me about the knee,” Dern said during an appearance on the Believe You Me podcast. “He said ‘You could’ve knocked her out if you hit her more’…and I was like, what did I do? My first reaction was to take her to the ground and just grapple, so I still don’t know what that’s like to connect on someone get the knockout” (h/t MMA News).

Mackenzie Dern Earned Her Fifth UFC Performance Bonus

Mackenzie Dern appeared to be on the cusp of a finish multiple times during her Fight Night headliner, at one point landing an absolutely brutal knee in the clinch that nearly put ‘Overkill’ away. To Hill’s credit, she continued to move and fight her way out of every situation that had fight-ending potential. In the end, Dern’s improved striking matched with her impeccable grappling game was too much for Hill to overcome.

The bout was given Fight of the Night honors and earned Mackenzie Dern her fifth $50,000 performance bonus in 11 fights with the promotion.

The win moved Dern into the No. 7 spot in the strawweight rankings and will likely tee her up for a top-five opponent in her next outing.

No. 8 ranked contender Mackenzie Dern looked to continue her climb up the strawweight rankings as she squared off with the always-active Angela Hill in the UFC Vegas 73 main event on Saturday night. Hill, sitting in the No. 14 spot in the rankings, had a chance to thrust herself into the division’s top ten, should she leave The APEX with arguably the biggest win of her mixed martial arts career.

Both women came out ready to throw hands from the opening bell. Surprisingly, Dern appeared to have the advantage on the feet which allowed her to put pressure on Hill early. Throwing ‘Overkill’ off-balance with some beautiful striking, Dern was able to take things to the mat where she nearly locked in an arm bar, but simply ran out of time in the opening round.

Hill was able to slow things down and potentially even things up in the second round, but the pace most certainly picked up again in the third with Dern landing a massive knee that rocked Hill. Dern took the opportunity to drag Hill to the canvas once again and easily slipped into a full mount. Dern delivered an onslaught of strikes, but Hill continued moving and defending, preventing the ref from stepping in. Miraculously, Hill survived the round.

The final 10 minutes of the contest was all Dern as the Brazilian jiu-jitsu beauty took Hill down at will and punished her for a majority of the remaining two rounds en route to a unanimous decision victory.

Official Result: Mackenzie Dern def. Angela Hill via unanimous decision (49-43, 49-44, 45-44)

Mackenzie Dern vs. Angela Hill Betting Preview UFC Vegas 73

Knocked back a week ahead of a scheduled showdown at UFC on ABC 4 last weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina – a strawweight pairing between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Mackenzie Dern, and former undisputed Invicta FC champion, Angela Hill is slated to headline the promotion’s return to Nevada for UFC Vegas 73.

Promoted to a five-round main event showing following the cancellation of a bantamweight rematch between incoming title challenger, Irene Aldana and former championship chaser, Raquel Pennington – Phoenix native, Dern returns in her third Octagon headliner and second straight main event clash as she takes on Hill.

Suffering defeat last time out – just the third in her 15-fight professional career, Arizona-born grappler, Dern dropped a main event decision loss to Yan Xiaonan – who turned in a recent first round KO win over former champion, Jessica Andrade – and is widely expected to fight the winner of a UFC 292 title affair between compatriot, Zhang Weili, and Amanda Lemos.

As for Hill, the current #14 ranked strawweight has witnessed somewhat of a career resurgence as of recent times, racking up consecutive decision wins over both Lupita Godinez, and Emily Ducote.

However, despite the recent run of form falling the win of Hill, odds over at BetWay have Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Dern currently closing as a -187 betting favorite to rebound to the winner’s enclosure at the UFC Apex facility

15-12 throughout a storied mixed martial arts career, which includes a 2016 Invicta FC strawweight title victory, Hill had suffered a run of three consecutive defeats against Tecia Torres, Amanda Lemos, and Virna Jandiroba before he pair of successes against both Godinez and Ducote.

Competing on The Ultimate Fighter 20 back in 2014, Hill suffered an eventual submission blemish against ultimate tournament victor, Carla Esparza – with the latter going on to mint herself as the inaugural strawweight champion, before clinching the title last year for a second time.

12-3 as a professional, Dern, 30, is one of the most heralded and highly-touted Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu players who has transitioned to mixed martial arts today – earning the #8 rank in the official UFC strawweight pile to boot.

An alum of Invicta FC to boot, the former Shannon Knapp-led prospect has recorded impressive Octagon wins over Ashley Yoder, Amanda Cooper, Hannah Cifers, Randa Markos, Nina Nunes, and both common-foes, Jandiroba and Torres since moving to the promotion

A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under her father, Wellington ‘Megaton’ Dias, Dern, who has secured a whopping seven submission wins from 12 total career triumphs, can be backed as low as 13/8 to successfully continue that trend and submit Hill to emerge with a win at UFC Vegas 73 this weekend.

Under the tutelage of renowned head coach, Jason Parillo, however, Dern, who has attempted to utilize more and more of her striking in recent fights, is currently sat at both 14/1, and 12/5 to either defeat Hill via KO, or TKO – or land a decision success, respectively, with BetWay.

Outright, it appears money suggests Dern is the overall favorite to forces the judge’s scorecards in her favor should they be required at UFC Vegas 73, however, veteran mainstay, Hill is also closing at 2/1 to continue her winning ways should the judge’s require involvement.

Tabatha Ricci and Angela Hill delivered an intense and high-action co-main event at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night.

Ricci looked to bring the pressure to Hill right away in the first, as the two traded throughout the course of the opening round. That led to plenty of trading over the course of the fight’s 15 minutes.

The high pace saw “Baby Shark” control the action in the first frame, but the second presented a much closer story. Ricci again looked to take charge and bring pressure in the pocket. Her American counterpart, however, looked to answer her attacks with counters and seemed to land the cleaner shots. The Brazilian did manage to score a takedown during the stanza.

Hill managed to put up a strong third round to try to solidify things in her favor. However, all three judges ultimately gave the nod to Ricci with scores of 29-28.
