Conor McGregor’s return to the Octagon remains the talk of the town in the mixed martial arts (MMA) community.

“The Notorious” is still gunning for a rematch with UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, he’ll likely have to earn such a rematch given how dominant “The Eagle’s” win over the Irishman was this past October. Khabib will be unifying his lightweight title with interim champ Dustin Poirier in September from Abu Dhabi.

As McGregor seeks his return opponent, featherweight Alexander Volkanovski tells The Body Lock MMA that he’s down to face the former “Champ Champ.” Although McGregor’s days at featherweight are over, Volkanovski believes he presents McGregor with stylistic issues similar to that of Khabib, with a more advanced standup game:

“Oh mate, I would love that,” Volkanovski said. “Again, money, money, money. I know he’s game. I’ll be completely different problems that he’s never dealt with, as well. I’m a pretty bad matchup for him. I’m not the type that is just going to come in and he’ll catch me. I’m going to be a lot harder for him to draw me in like that, and then he’s got my wrestling to worry about.

“Once I get him going and my rhythm, then I’m putting my pressure, then he’s worried about everything. I believe I’m a similar style to Khabib when it comes to the ground and stuff, but I believe I’ve got a whole ‘nother, higher level of striking. But I mean, that’d be some serious money, I’d love that.”

Volkanovski comes off a unanimous decision win over ex-featherweight kingpin Jose Aldo. He was unfortunately passed up for a title opportunity in favor of Frankie Edgar, and was recently battling an infection in a hospital. Now that he’s back to full health, perhaps Volkanovski will be next in line for the winner of Holloway vs. Edgar.

Alexander Volkanovski is confident he can beat Max Holloway as he believes he’s a bad matchup for the featherweight champion.

Unless something crazy happens, Volkanovski is ideally next in line for a shot at the 145-pound title. Despite recent wins over Chad Mendes and Jose Aldo, the Aussie was skipped over for Frankie Edgar. Edgar will now look to dethrone Holloway in the main event of UFC 240 which takes place July 27.

Should Holloway emerge victorious, however, he will likely defend his title against Volkanovski next. The Hawaiian is undefeated in his last 13 fights at featherweight and is yet to be challenged in the weight class. However, Volkanovski believes he presents problems for “Blessed”:

“I just still fight my fight,” Volkanovski said when asked how he’d beat Holloway on The MMA Hour. “Look, he’s a gamer, he comes forward, he does a lot of the work for me. That’s why I’m a bad matchup for him, I really do believe that.

“He’s the type of person that does come forward and he’s not the hardest hitter, he’s got a lot of volume, but again if you’re there trying to throw volume at me, you’re gonna receive some and they’re gonna be heavy and they’re gonna be powerful. Then you’ve got my wrestling to worry about, then you’ve got everything else to worry about. I’ve got many tools that he needs to worry about, so I believe it’s a very dangerous fight for him. But he’s game, he’d be keen, let’s make it happen.”

Volkanovski Knew Holloway Could Be Beat

While Holloway is undefeated at featherweight since 2013, his most recent outing was a unanimous decision defeat to Dustin Poirier in their interim lightweight title fight at UFC 236 in April. Many expected him to emerge triumphant in that fight, but the Aussie believes it’s good that people now realize he’s not unbeatable.

“I always knew that he could be beat,” Volkanovski added. “I always knew that I was a bad matchup for him. It was probably better for everyone else to realize that he’s not invincible, everyone thought he was just unstoppable, which I don’t blame them, obviously he’s looked really good, much respect to him.

“But at the same time, I knew he wasn’t invincible, that just showed and let’s be realistic, I’ve got cardio for days and I will not gas and I will be powerful the whole time, so I’m a very, very bad matchup for him I believe.”

Despite many believing he has more than earned a title shot, Alexander Volkanovski will have to wait.

Should UFC flyweight and bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo get his way, Volkanovski could find himself waiting even longer. Cejudo teased a potential jump up to 145 pounds after his 135-pound title victory over Marlon Moraes at UFC 238. Speaking to Submission Radio recently, Volkanovski warned “Triple C” to “stay in your lane”:

“Stay in your lane, Henry, come on mate. Honestly, what he’s done is unbelievable. It was good on him. I actually picked him to win. I didn’t expect him to have so many problems earlier. I knew the guy was powerful. Maybe the ankle was why was he was sort of cowering to the kicks a little bit, if you know what I mean.

“He was sort of pretty flat-footed and I thought he would have done a little bit more on the outside to make it a little bit more difficult for someone like Moraes to just load up the kicks. But again, that could have been the ankle. So for him to overcome that and get it done, good on him. Him coming to 145, you know, again, you gotta be quick in this division, but we’re still quick and we’re just a whole another powerful type of beast.

“And we’re a stacked division, a lot of very tough guys in our division that I don’t think he’ll want any of that. But maybe he’ll give it a crack, maybe UFC will let him do it. But yeah, that will change quick.

Cejudo would certainly present some interesting matchups to the division. He is an Olympic gold medal wrestler and has improved drastically in the standup department over the years. As for Volkanovski, he hasn’t lost a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) bout since 2013 and is currently on a 17-fight win streak.

In his last outing, Volkanovski out-classed Jose Aldo in his native Brazil at UFC 237. Should he ever find himself standing opposite Cejudo inside the cage, Volkanovski is confident his takedown defense will hold up against the Olympian:

“Well, he ain’t gonna take me down. And if he does, I’m getting back up. And again, I got the cardio, and then again, I’m just gonna be too powerful. And again, I’m good on the outside. He’s gonna be a lot shorter than me.

“You see what I can use in my range, even with tall people, imagine what I could do to someone half my size. That will be interesting. But look man, again, he’s an athlete, he really is, he’s explosive, he still would be dangerous and quick, but at the same time, I just think he’ll have a puncher’s chance. But him being that light, I don’t think that’s likely.”
