MMA is a harsh and unforgiving game, which is why it’s so remarkable that Vitor Belfort has kept himself relevant in the sport for over 20 years.

“The Phenom” was once a UFC light heavyweight champion and is still a UFC tournament winner. He once possessed some of the fastest and most explosive striking in the sport, making him a legitimate knockout artist.

Perhaps more notably and notoriously, the Brazilian was once the poster boy for the UFC’s testosterone-replacement therapy (TRT) era, an era that saw Belfort, in 2013, run through top middleweights Michael Bisping, Luke Rockhold and Dan Henderson with three consecutive head kick knockouts.

Unfortunately, the 39-year-old Belfort is no longer that same man, and to be blunt, he’s a mere shell of his former self.

Belfort has lost four of his last five fights, with all four of those losses coming by way of T/KO. The most recent loss in that stretch came in the main event of last night’s (March 11, 2017) UFC Fight Night 106 from Fortaleza, Brazil when Belfort was stopped by 25-year-old Kelvin Gastelum in the opening round.

“The Phenom” was dropped early on, but he was able to regroup and land back on his feet before a thunderous left hand from Gastelum, followed by a flurry of ground strikes, gave the referee no choice but to end the fight.

The loss added to Belfort’s concerning losing streak, but it also added to his steady physical decline that we have seen over the last few years.

His body is longer the same; he looks tired, worn down, and dare I say, old, a complete 180-degree flip from the physique he possessed during his vicious knockout spree that took place just a few years ago. Aside from that, Belfort’s chin has seemed to abandon him, as he simply doesn’t appear to be able to come back after getting clipped. “The Phenom” has always seen success in using an explosive blitz of powerful strikes, but nowadays, Belfort looks almost helpless in the octagon if that patented early blitz doesn’t land.

With one fight left on his current contract, Belfort has made it clear that he would like to fight one more time at UFC 212 on June 3, 2017 in his home of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It’s a reasonable request and one that should be granted given Belfort’s history of accomplishments in the sport, but his retirement bout shouldn’t come against another young and hungry prospect.

Belfort simply can’t compete with the division’s young, hungry contenders anymore, nor can he can compete with the division’s elite at this stage of his career. It’s clear that the best days of his illustrious career are behind him and perhaps it’s comforting that he too has realized that.

The Brazilian will likely remain a well-known name in the sport of MMA, and for good reason. His career speaks for itself, as he was once a young lion, even a Phenom, but those days have drifted away. Father time waits for no fighter and Belfort is no different.

There’s no shame in that. He shares the UFC record for most finishes of all-time with his countryman Anderson Silva, and he’s put on some of the most iconic knockouts on film. Belfort has nothing left to prove. He will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame the moment he is eligible. He doesn’t have to keep absorbing more damage to cement his legacy. It’s in place, and it’s a decorated one for a man who got in on the ground level of a now-thriving new sport.

It’s time for the old lion to leave the jungle once and for all.

After winning the UFC bantamweight title with a dominant performance over Dominick Cruz in the co-main event of this past December’s UFC 207 from Las Vegas, Nevada, Cody “No Love” Garbrandt expressed interest in facing off with ex-teammate and former titleholder TJ Dillashaw.

Garbrandt was granted his wish, as he will indeed defend his strap against Dillashaw later this year, but not before the two coach opposite each other on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), which has been labeled Redemption.

It was clear that the two 135 pounders had some bad blood between them, but it appears as if the two actually got into a physical altercation while filming the reality show. A screenshot, which was grabbed from a recent UFC 209 promotional video (Via MMAMania), shows “No Love” grabbing the neck of Dillashaw.

Check it out below:

Are you excited for the next season of TUF, and who do you expect to come out on top when the two men meet later this year?

Top lightweight contenders Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov and Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson will face off in a pivotal interim lightweight title bout in the co-main event of this weekend’s (Sat., March 4, 2017) UFC 209 from Las Vegas, Nevada, with a shot at reigning champion Conor McGregor seemingly hanging in the balance.

Ferguson is riding an incredible nine fight win streak and he plans to keep that going against Nurmagomedov. In fact, Ferguson is planning to ‘slice and dice’ “The Eagle” before finishing him, which will leave no need for a rematch in his opinion:

“(Expletive) no (there won’t ever be a rematch),” Ferguson told MMAJunkie at today’s UFC 209 open workouts. “Not after I finish him the way I’m going to finish him. It’s different. I’m going to slice and dice him. With the new rules as far as the UFC goes, he’s got something else coming for him. I’m keeping these (elbows) sharp like medal graters. There’s sparks flying, baby.”

While the two 155-pound titans have traded barbs in the media leading up to the bout, Ferguson admits that he has nothing but respect for Nurmagomedov, although he also said that the two have ‘beef’ inside the cage:

“You can love somebody without liking them,” Ferguson said. “I love Khabib, man. He’s my brother in arms. We’re all here, we’re all for one. I got peace with him, but inside there we got beef. We got to squash this (expletive). I’m tired of him, man. He’s a bully, and I’m going to shut him up, but I got respect for him, his father and his whole camp.”

Who do you expect to come out on top in ‘Sin City’?

Michael Bisping hasn’t forgotten about Luke Rockhold.

‘The Count’ secured his first even UFC title in a jaw-dropping first round knockout win over Rockhold back in June. Rockhold has since remained out of Octagon action due to an injury, however, he recently commented on an episode of The MMA Hour with MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani that he’d be prepared to forego a title opportunity to settle his differences with Bisping in a final trilogy bout.

Bisping got the opportunity to respond earlier this week (quotes via MMA Fighting), and stated that he believes Rockhold is done competing in mixed martial arts (MMA) after he ‘took his soul’ in their UFC 199 match-up:

“What is Luke Rockhold doing?” Bisping said. “When did he say he’s going to fight again? What are his plans? I do believe we are now almost in March. That fight was in June. I don’t know what happened there, but I think I took his soul. I don’t think we’ll ever see Luke Rockhold again. I beat the sh*t out of him. I don’t know, I think he’s done. The way he went down, I think so. Why hasn’t he fought again?

“A lot of time has passed. If that were me, I would’ve been right back in there.”

The middleweight champ has no shortage of foes in the 185-pound division, as he also has a bit of unfinished business with former division kingpin Anderson Silva as well. The pair tangled back in February of last year with Bisping taking home the unanimous decision win. The victory came with a bit of controversy, however, as a flying knee at the end of a round by Silva seemed to have rendered the Brit unconscious; but ‘The Spider’ walked away from Bisping without attempting to finish the fight.

Silva recently took home a controversial unanimous decision win over Derek Brunson at UFC 208 earlier this month (Sat. February 11, 2017), a fight that Bisping thinks the Brazilian actually lost:

“I thought he lost,” Bisping said. “I guess you could see an argument for him winning, but I think he disappointed. I thought Anderson really, to be honest, clowned himself, clowned everybody in attendance, clowned the UFC. It was clearly obvious that Anderson was the better fighter. He stopped the takedowns for the most part. His takedown defense looked great. And when he did decide to pull the trigger and actually throw something, he was all over Brunson.

“But he just didn’t pull the trigger. He stood there and he tried to do his usual Anderson Silva thing. He doesn’t fight with a sense of urgency because he’s the great Anderson Silva. Well, unfortunately, that’s not good enough. He got very lucky with the decision, and I feel that it’s a real shame, because like everybody, I’m a fan of Anderson Silva. I like watching him fight. I feel that he didn’t do justice to his legions of fans.”

Bisping also took a shot at Silva’s past issues with performance enhancing drugs (PEDs), stating that Silva looked a little ‘flabbier’ at weigh-ins before his match with Brunson:

“He did,” Bisping said. “I said that at the weigh-ins when I saw at the weigh-ins. He looked a little skinny, and a little flabbier. It’s weird. Weird when you don’t take steroids what happens to you.”

Do you think Bisping and Rockhold will get the opportunity to throw-down once again? Or will Silva instead run it back with the middleweight champ first?
