The UFC announced last week that they will be returning to San Jose, Calif., as UFC on Fox 7 will be taking place at the HP Pavilion. No fights at this time have been announced for the show.

The UFC was last in San Jose for UFC on Fuel TV 4, which took place in July with a card headlined by Chris Weidman against Mark Munoz.

The HP Pavilion is the arena that Strikeforce used to hold a majority of their shows. The promotion is closing after their event on Saturday.

Could we see old Strikeforce guys on UFC on Fox 7. Grab the popcorn and let’s take a look.

Invicta’s Bec Hyatt: Only Difference Between Men and Women Is We Have Breasts

Women’s MMA has been on a rapid rise in the United States over the last 12 months. The most significant reason is due to the upstart women’s promotion, Invicta Fighting Championships. The promotion returns tonight, as Invicta FC 4 will be taking place from Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan. The main event of the card is for the inaugural strawweight title between veteran Carla Esparza and Bec Hyatt.

Hyatt, who is from Brisbane, Queensland in Australia, embarked on a 26-hour flight to arrive in Kansas City. She has noticed huge differences between her homeland and the United States.

“The meals are twice the size here (United States), and we (in Australia) drive on the other side of the road, so we are starting to freak out driving around here,” Hyatt told Bleacher Report. “There are some pretty crazy drivers. We thought we were going too slow for the speed limit, but everyone was just speeding around us.”

Getting started in MMA can be tricky for a woman due to the fact of a lack of training partners. For Hyatt, though, she got that start doing another sport.

“I actually started kickboxing to lose weight, and that’s where I met my husband (Dan), who was a MMA fighter,” Hyatt stated. “He actually got me into the sport.”

MMA promotions in Australia are scarce due to a majority of the states not having regulation. A lack of women competing in her home country and the success of Invicta has brought Hyatt to the United States for this opportunity.

“The (United) States has always been my goal, especially when Invicta came on the map,” Hyatt stated. “That was definitely my goal of getting to fight in Invicta, winning a few fights and then getting a title fight. It turns out, it is my debut fight for my title fight. It’s all happening really quickly, and it is really exciting.”

Hyatt is the first Australian woman to compete in MMA here in the United States. “Rowdy” is honored to be the first woman to achieve that goal.

“It’s a huge thing for me,” Hyatt stated. “It is definitely the most proudest moment and biggest achievement to be the first Australian woman to make out here fighting for Invicta. I have the whole Australian MMA scene behind me. I’m going to do us proud. It is nice to represent Australia.”

Hyatt was originally supposed to face Joanne Calderwood on the preliminary portion of the card. When Claudia Gadelha got injured in training last week, Hyatt got the call from Invicta to face Esparza. The Australian knows that she has a tough task ahead of her in Esparza.

“She’s (Esparza) really good,” Hyatt stated. “She’s on a four-fight winning streak and has really put a mark on the 115-pound division.  She’s won by submission and TKO. Her wrestling is awesome. She’s got quite the resume. She wants to come out and bang, but she also likes to wrestle. She’s quite well-rounded.”

Some people still feel that women’s MMA will never reach the heights of the men, even with the popularity the women have gained in the last year. Hyatt feels that the women are finally getting the recognition but feels men and women aren’t that much different.

“It is (women’s MMA) just skyrocketed in the last year,” Hyatt stated. “It is only going to be getting bigger and better. It is about time the women get the recognition. We are athletes and no different (than men). I always say we have breasts, and that’s the only difference. We are knocking on the door, and you can’t kick us out forever. I’m glad we finally got here. It is only bigger and better things to come.”

Shannon Knapp Talks 2012 and 2013 for Invicta FC, Women in the UFC, IPPV

The MMA world wasn’t sure what to expect when former UFC, Strikeforce and IFL executive Shannon Knapp announced in that she was forming Invicta Fighting Championships, an all female MMA promotion.

Women’s fighting was still a novelty at the time, and the world didn’t know what to expect. But in 2012, due to the rising popularity of UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey and Invicta, female fighting is on the rise as we start 2013.

Invicta kicks things off for the women, as Invicta FC 4 takes place tomorrow night from Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas starting at 6 p.m. CST. You can watch the card on IPPV for $7.95 on InvictaFC.com, as the promotion has partnered with UStream to air the event.

When Invicta aired their first event last April, people really didn’t know what to expect. Each show gained more buzz, with Invicta reporting it had over 200,000 unique visitors for the first two shows. Invicta grew momentum as each show happened, and they are now looking forward to what lies ahead in 2013.

“If I had to sum it up (2012) in one word, I would say amazing,” Invicta President Shannon Knapp told Bleacher Report. “We have had an incredible and amazing year. I couldn’t have scripted it and painted a prettier picture. We are definitely happy with how the year (2012) turned out. We are looking forward to continuing the momentum in 2013.”

Anytime you are running a business, you come to the point where you eventually have to make money in order to be able to have financial stability. Invicta didn’t charge a fee online for people to watch the first three events. But with the show tomorrow night, Invicta is going to be partnering up with UStream to air the event on Internet PPV with a charge of $7.95. The event will be airing on InvictaFC.com.

Knapp knows that it is now time to start seeing if they can make money on the product, and gauge people’s willingness to pay the money to watch the fights.

“It comes back to we are moving into 2013 and to look at the prospects of monetizing,” Knapp stated. “I think this is a really good opportunity for us to really gauge where we are at. A lot of times we have people like, “Oh I would pay for that.”

“It’s giving everybody a chance to put their money where there mouth is. We wanted to make the price of $7.95 is fan friendly. Anytime you implement a change, you need to do it in a way so everybody can adjust to it. I felt this was a good price point and that let the fans know we aren’t out there to hurt anyone by any stretch of the imagination.”

“We need to do like any business does and that’s move forward with monetizing and keep things going.”

The year of 2012, for the women beyond the success of Invicta, demonstrated that women are now in capable of lasting in the UFC. The first big event will take place at UFC 157, as Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey will be squaring off against former Invicta import Liz Carmouche. Knapp knew women would be in the UFC and looks forward to seeing how the fans will respond.

“I’ve always said this was coming and Ronda (Rousey) would be the first (woman) from day one, I think it is amazing,” Knapp stated. “I think she’s worked hard and done a lot to help promote the sport. I think it is going to be interesting and I wish them much success. I definitely supported it and promoted it. How they (the UFC) have been with this affects my business.”

“I feel confident and comfortable that Zuffa is going to go in there, promote and do it well because that’s what they do. Ronda (Rousey) is breaking down barriers everyday and changing the game. We fight for the same cause. It’s going to be interesting to see how the fans respond, just for the fact that the UFC has been around for 20 years and it has been all male dominated.”

People are expecting an even better year from Invicta as we head into 2013. Knapp knows what they need to do and expects an even better product in the new year.

“You are always going to strive to be better at what we do,” Knapp stated. “We are going to be looking to improve our product and the overall visual of our product. We are going to keep going out there knocking down barriers.”

Rematches in MMA are not always good as the original. It is like seeing a sequel to one of your favorite movies. You get so excited to see it and then it is a total dud. Movies like that include Total Recall that came back in 2012, Rocky V (I know it took five movies to get to a bad Rocky) and when they did American Pie 2.

In MMA, we have seen some classic fights that we haven’t gotten to see again. That is due to fighters retiring, leaving the organization or something happens to one or both fighters.

Let’s take a look and see what 10 rematches should have happened.

UFC 155 was supposed to feature Tim Boetsch against Chris Weidman in a key middleweight bout. Weidman, though, ended up suffering an injury in training last month and had to bow out of the fight.

The UFC didn’t have to look to far in a replacement, as Weidman‘s, training partner, Costa Philippou stepped up to face Boetsch this coming Saturday.

Both guys are on four-fight winning streaks, but Boetsch is closer to a title shot considering the opponents he has faced during that time.
